Moment of Silence

I didn't know any of the brave men and women that rushed into the buildings in an attempt to save the victims. However, their loss really hit home with me, more than I can describe in words. May their brave souls rest in peace...

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The policeman stood and faced his God,which must always come to pass,in hopes his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.

Step forward now policeman. How shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To my Church have you been true?

The policeman squared his shoulders and said, "No, Lord I guess I haven't. Because those of us who carry a badge can't always be a Saint. I've had to work most Sundays and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes I've been violent, because the streets are awfully tough. But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep. Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, I wept unmanly tears. I know I don't deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fears. If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand, I never expected too much, but if you don't...I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod. As the policeman waited quietly for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman. You've borne your burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heaven's Streets. You've done your time in Hell."

There lies the port; the vessel puffs her sail;

There gloom the dark, broad seas. My mariners,

Souls that have toil'd, and wrought, and thought with me,--

That ever with a frolic welcome took

The thunder and the sunshine, and opposed

Free hearts, free foreheads,--you and I are old;

Old age hath yet his honor and his toil.

Death closes all; but something ere the end,

Some work of noble note, may yet be done,

Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.

The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks;

The long day wanes; the slow moon climbs; the deep

Moans round with many voices. Come my friends.

'T is not too late to seek a newer world.

Push off, and sitting well in order smite

The sounding furrows; for my purpose holds

To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths

Of all the western stars, until I die.

It may be that the gulfs will wash us down;

It may be we shall touch the Happy Isles,

And see the great Achilles, whom we knew.

Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'

We are not now that strength which in old days

Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are,--

One equal temper of heroic hearts,

Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will

To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Today, two years after the attack on the twin towers, our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anna Lindh, died from the injuries a murderer inflicted on her yesterday.

She was out shopping in a mall when this happened.

Also today, also in Sweden, a five year old girl was killed by a maniac, who attacked a kindergarten, for no apparent reason.

I refrain from trying to rank which is worst.

Although the scale of disaster is different, never forget, in America, that tragedies occur, as a result of sinister violence, all over our world.

Every day.

Every year.
