+Wizard William and Team Morris Posted March 21, 2006 Posted March 21, 2006 If anyone wants to drive a large, thirsty 4 x 4 with a clear conscience then get in touch with the low impact living initiative on the web and they will teach you how to make biodiesel from the waste fat from your local chippy or teach you how to convert your car so it will run safely on pure veg. oil. They will also supply you with ready made bio diesel but this is more expensive than regularv diesel, but hey, what price the planet? Quote

My reply, not technicaly true about Range Rovers! The body work, except from a few panels is made of a metal called Birmabright, its a alloy, so does not rust, just dent! OK, the under part is steel, but is designed to last for decades. like Dakar 4x4 said, when the Range Rovers body is beyond repair, remove it and replace it with a fibreglass body kit! Just think, how many Range Rovers older than a "M" plate do you see on the road? Thousands! Of course M plate was the last year of manufactor for the Classic shape, so they are all over 11 years old. I regularly drive a 1969 Velar (Range Rover prototype) thats still original and is 37 years old! How many Mondeo's will last that long? The Velar still gets used a s an everyday vehicle, its been just under 3 times round the clock, and still has its original clutch! I have seen it work by towing trailers with land rovers on them, through to haveing a lawn mower attachment put on the back to mow the meadows. Could a Smart car last and do that? Vivien Quote

Also we can all be careless at some time (I have), that wee mini driver, motorcyclist or cyclist may be pleased that they are still alive by being hit by a Landy? Not sure if you know or not, but being hit by a 4x4 rather than a car can have advantages, Firstly, although the car may be higher at the body line, so is the undercarriage of the vehicle. This means that the clearance is greater, so can actually drive over the top of a person or child, instead of crushing them under a cars wheels. Secondly, OK, someone may hit the front and then colapse on the bonnet, but the chances of smashing your head on the windscreen, or being bounced off the bonnet and thrown to the ground behind the vehicle is very rare! Anyway, if everyone drove to the high way code and speed limits, then driving accident or should I say road traffic collisions would not happen, not unless the driver of the offending vehilce was acting or driving irresposible. As for people walking or running / cycling in front of the vehicles, that is just irresponsible of the walker etc, not of the driver. Sureley a road is clearly marked, so care should be taken by the walker etc, not just the car driver. It is a fact that everyone has the duty of care to drive and behave responsibly on the roads. No one particular group is anymore careless than another. Its just a fact accidents do happen and to all users regardless. Me! I blame the irresponsible! Quote
nobby.nobbs Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 yeah but my only point was i used to turn up to accidents and people would be hysterical becasue their pride and joy had been dented or written off. they had little or no injuries and the other persons involved likewise. full insurance etc. so what the heck is the problem? car insurance has that advantage over life insurance, you get to enjoy the first! who cares if a cars been written off no matter how rare expensive or special the dadgum thing is? accidents can only happen when we make a mistake....... and we all make mistakes sooner or later relax and enjoy. +BareClawz Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 (edited) One point with BVs, as they're called is that you need an H classification on your driving licence for tracked vechicles. But if anyone wants to buy one and needs a chauffeur, I have an H courtesy of HM Forces. I have driven one of these beauties and they will go just about anywhere, up and down what feels like 45* slopes, bogs, sand, snow, even tarmac. I have been told as long as you make sure the bung is in the hull base they will swim. The beauty is that they're automatic and drive just like a car. In fact they have a volve engine. Much easier to drive than what I learnt on... http://www.militaryvehicles.com/vehicle_150.shtml Just 8mpg but it does have a 90 gallon tank Now that will go almost anywhere, even over Ford Escorts. +Haggis Hunter Posted March 26, 2006 Posted March 26, 2006 You need a commander (friend poking their head out the top) to watch out for you whilst driving a Saxon. The windows are extremely narrow, and you cannot see any traffic down to the side. If you need a volunteer I am willing to come along, used the Saxon many times, and just like Bear Claws thanks to the military I can drive your BV for you and the 432. Did you know that a 432 doesn't have a footbrake, you brake using the steering tillers. I forgot this the first time I drove one, and crashed it into the hangar door. Quote
