+travisl
Who holds the record for most caches found in one day? I'm in the process of organizing the route for our Yakima Cache Machine event, and am up to 59 caches for the day. I doubt we'll get all these, but it's hard to say, considering that I never thought we'd hit the 37 caches we found at the Bremerton Cache Machine event, and we've got more daylight to work with this time. Is 37 the current record? (Somebody Markwell me if this has already been asked and answered -- I couldn't find it with the ''search'' tool.) +SilverRubicon
How many you can find in a single day really depends on where you are and what time of year it is. Living in NH, and only geocaching since January, my best is 8 in a single day. But it's winter with 2 - 3 feet of snow on the ground and caches are not very close together here. There are only 180 in the whole state including virtual caches, which I have no interest in doing at this point. I have only done traditional caches and have done them alone. The majority of them required substantial digging to find in all the snow, some as much as an hour. And the eight I found in one day were spread out over 43.8 miles. That and the closest one was 29.9 miles from my house. These distances are as the crow flies and actual driving distance is substantially more. I realize once summer comes and the snow melts here the number of caches found in a single day will go up. One because the amount of daylight will increase, and two because you won’t need to dig for them in a couple feet of snow and ice. But even then I don’t see being able to find more than a couple dozen due to the amount of distance between the caches and the fact most around here require hiking to get to them. With the majority of them requiring at least a half mile of hiking to reach, and quite a few further and up the side of mountains. So cache numbers alone don’t really tell the whole story. City caching and country caching are just not the same. In fact VT which is the state that borders NH only has 79 in the whole state. There are probably cities that have more than that. +The Cheeseheads
My best is 16. That was limited by the fact that me route took be from Kenosha in SE WI up to western Milwaukee to get them all. Plus I was alone. Plus, it was December 31st which, while being a nice day didn't offer much in terms of daylight. I'm guessing that there are spots in California where you could probably walk your way around 16 caches, so I think per-day totals are only worthwhile when comparing them to other cachers in the same area. 37 is still pretty impressive, though... - - - - - Wisconsin Geocaching Association Quote Link to comment
+Nellamit
but I could easily have done several more. However, I guess I wouldn't want to do more than about 6 or maybe 8. I like to enjoy the areas where I am caching at, not just rush in, rush out. Quote Link to comment
+The Leprechauns
In a poll last October, the highest single-day counts by an individual cacher were 40 to 45 caches by Wolfb8, followed closely by 38 finds for BruceS. That and the closest one was 29.9 miles from my house That is an accomplishment to find them in the snow, sometimes they are hard to find with no snow at all on the ground. Yesterday I was looking for one and I walked right over it, it was placed very well but my coordinates was showing it to be 9 feet away, I found it after about 10 minutes. With no snow on the ground. I placed a 3 stage cache yesterday on grassland that right now is short and passable, but when summer comes that place will have grass 5 feet tall. This is the easiest time to hunt. No leaves on the trees, no snow, no bugs (ticks, chiggers) and hardly no grass. When I first started I was gun-ho and went out one day and found 8 (40 mile spread) caches then when I got home that night it dawned on me I didn't get to enjoy the places I was at and so now I take my time and enjoy every place geocaching takes me. Just my 2 cents worth The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard. Quote Link to comment

+RichardMoore
I agree with SilverRubicon. It depends on where you are and the time of year. It also depends on: 1) Are you alone or with a group? A group can search an area faster than one person, and it doesn't take much longer for several people to sign the log book than one person. There is a net gain in time. 2) Are they virtuals or traditionals? Most virtuals that I have done have been a lot faster than the traditionals. 3) What about multi-caches? Should a three stage multi count as three finds? Probably not. But if you're just going for numbers a multi-cache would slow you down. My best day so far was 12 finds during an all-day Cache Caravan with the Northeast Ohio Geocachers. There were 9 to 13 cachers in the group on a cold February day in Ohio. Could I have done this on my own? Yes. Would I have enjoyed it as much? Definitely not. I spent the day in good company having a great time. It's not the numbers as much as what you're doing to get them. I'm out there to enjoy myself and find new places. Sometimes the pleasure comes from the journey, sometimes from the find, sometimes from seeing a hawk or an icy waterfall, and, admittedly, sometimes from seeing how fast and how far I can push myself. It depends on the mood I'm in. I guess right now I'm in the mood to ramble on. Sorry about that, but I'm going to past this as written. Quote Link to comment

robertlipe
That's an interesting list. I poked at it a little bit since my name is the one that appears with the second highest frequency. Bruces is, of course, first. I'm probably opening myself to abuse for musing on this out loud (that seems to be a favorite past time on these kinds of threads) but I'll do it anyway. I certainly remember the six days in question, but strangely if you asked me to name the six days I'd cached the hardest, only two of those would have come to mind - there are certainly days I've played harder and longer to get fewer. Four of the six were out of state. Only two were "virgin" territory that I hadn't hit before. Only two (Huntsville and Louisville) involved artificial light and five of the six were during the shortest days of the year. It's really suprising to me that the days I've done on both sides of sunup and sundown weren't there, so maybe I should leave the lights out of my backpack. It's actually funny that my biggest day was the one in my home area where I took a day off work to "cache up" in order to actually have 1000 finds for my 1000 find celebration. I was prepared to cache into the night, but quit in the late afternoon becuase I had "enough". :-) Thanx for the flashbacks! Quote Link to comment

A couple were virts, but they had 5 to 15 minutes of questions. One was digging for fossils for 10 minutes. We also had to dig out Pheromone, due to gophers. We had about 5 actual DNF's--they extra burn time (Stop #1 was 20 min for DNF). The highest difficulty was probably 2.5 star. Quote Link to comment

I don't log event caches...purist I guess. Otherwise, it be 63. Shared the same car with the legendary Moun10Bike and Yakima local George501949. We really had a great time. I must admit ti took me over 4 hours to log and post photos! I'm afraid more than half of the caches I had trouble remembering much about. This isn't something I'd want to do all the time, but now and than it's a blast. Quote Link to comment
+travisl
I don't know anyone who got 70+, but GEMs got 67, and The1Nub and I got 66. That includes two event caches and one virtual. The remainder were all physical caches. Of course, when you drive into a parking lot and everyone already there is signing the log book, it's not as satisfying as finding it yourself. But we sure got to see a lot of really neat spots on this 200 mile road trip. "I'm sure she would have been thrilled to find so much pooh in a little metal box." Quote Link to comment
+Wander Lost
Team Misguided also got 67 at the event. I was trying to explain it to someone and the only thing that comes close is the old time Keystone Cops movies. The local muggles didn't know what hit them. We're all here, because we're not 'all there'. Quote Link to comment

I'm still surprised the local police didn't take more of an interest. Peggy and I scored 66 for the day (I originally thought it was 64, but recounted while entering the logs). On Sunday we picked up the rest on the list, with the exception of Escaped, which had been plundered, and South of the Border, which was rumored to have copious ticks (no need to give them six or seven hours to find a place to latch on while we drove home). To compensate, we picked up 5 more on the drive, including Baby Talk, which we have been wanting to visit for months. Then we ran out to find one before I took Peggy to work on Monday, and another after work that evening. Total for the three days, 77 caches. Gotta do that again sometime... +Ish-n-Isha
Actually "Found" is a bit of a stretch isnt it? quote:Originally posted by travisl:Of course, when you drive into a parking lot and everyone already there is signing the log book, it's not as satisfying as finding it yourself. +bthomas
I'm amp'ed. Just need my leg to mend. Had imagined that 75 was a max. Now we know what to do. snip> MarcusArelius Jeez people stop and smell the roses! And that's the memorable thing. We stopped and smelled the roses about 60 times. We smelled blossoming almond orchards beside a canal, dug in the earth for fossils at a roadcut, found two tourist windmills, listened to a teen's emotional issues at the next pay phone, watched for the family feeding ducks to turn their backs, shagged a mag micro in front of a coffee shop window at lunch, infiltrated teens playing on their street, talked to a town historian, visited the back of the chicken plant, hung from a ped overcrossing, searched a caboose, walked through ground fog at midnight. It was cool. Quote Link to comment
+travisl
Ish-n-Isha asked, quote:Just curious, how many did you actually find? If by ''you'' you meant ''TravisL'', then the answer is 1 of the 65 physicals (Waterfall View), plus the 1 virtual. Most of the time, I was busy taking pictures or doing a U-turn four blocks past the park. After my ''not found'' log at Wapato two weeks ago, Criminal e-mailed me and joked, ''I'm starting to see why you're planning these gang-hunts.'' I'm not saying he's wrong. *blush* "I'm sure she would have been thrilled to find so much pooh in a little metal box." Quote Link to comment

I don't mind not being the finder. Joani finds the caches 50% of the time before I do. We've done a few caching 'trips' with some other cachers. We've always gone in the same car, and are 'on the hunt' together, so I've always felt part of the hunt even when I didn't find it. Plus, when there are three or four people searching there is the playful competitiveness of being the actual finder, which is fun. I don't know how much I would personally enjoy the 'machine' events, but in truth, any event where I am hanging with fellow cachers is going to be a good time. --Marky "All of us get lost in the darkness, dreamers learn to steer with a backlit GPSr" Quote Link to comment
+travisl
Looking back at the last two Machines, it's really just a different style of caching. If you're the kind of person whose primary geocaching goal is the enjoyment of the challenge of finding a cache, then Machine caching might be disappointing. My primary geocaching goal is to go to places that I otherwise wouldn't -- historic landmarks, scenic vistas, unusual features, or even neighborhood parks. The challenge of finding the physical cache once I get there is far secondary to me. Part of the reason I personally only found one cache on the YCM event was I was often one of the last to arrive at the cache location. I was too busy looking at the canyon walls, Japanese rock gardens, and gurgling creeks. (And I won't lie -- I made a lot of u-turns after passing park entrances, too.) I suspect that this bifurcation would closely match those who enjoy finding a micro in a rock pile in a strip mall parking lot, and those who don't. Definitely put me in the latter. Cache Machines are also social events -- much more so than monthly association meetings. "I'm sure she would have been thrilled to find so much pooh in a little metal box." Quote Link to comment

On the bright side, Ban Moun10bike from any more machines and all you need is 7 more days (weekends) and your 900+! Cachin's a bit sweeter when you've got an Isha! Quote Link to comment
