  1. My GPS sits in plain view in my car all the time. I frequently park in downtown Rochester at night. I have been doing this for years. Often, I don't even lock the doors. Haven't had it stolen yet. One of these days though. I am fortunate to live in an area where I can get away with this casual attitude. My home on the other hand, is a fortress.
  2. I had a similar problem a while back. After looking at the map page I discovered that the unit thought it was in Malaysia. I used the pan feature on the map to move the map back to my approximate location then set this as my new location. Within seconds it locked on to sats & has worked fine ever since.
  3. One of the ways companies are able to offer a large rebate on an item like this and still earn a profit is because many people never get around to sending them in, and others do not submit them EXACTLY as instructed, so they are able to deny them. This significantly reduces the average cost of the rebate per unit. Get the reciept, or you're screwed.
  4. There is actually at least one company marketing a golf-specific gps unit. It has maps of many golf courses loaded in so it tells you your exact yardage from any point on the course. I've seen them advertised on the golf channel.
  5. I just ordered one myself. I plan on placing it in a boy scout themed cache that my troop will hide. One of the boys in the troop has diabetes so I thought it fitting to start the bug out in our cache.
  6. I'm curious if anyone has ever experienced this. Intermittantly, when I am in a place where my gps seems to be recieving weak signals, it will seem to get confused and will show the icon traveling across the map at very high speeds-usually over 1500mph, as high as 2800mph. It will do this for a couple minutes then suddenly go back to normal or just lose the signal. Recently my unit just seemed to stop recieving sattelites. Almanac page showed sattelites, but no signals. Finally after a few days of this, thinking there was something wrong with my reciever, I started looking through the different menus and I went into "set new location" I found that my gps thought it was in Bangkok, Thailand. The satellites it was looking for on the almanac were on the other side of the world! I reset the location back to my home area and it instantly picked up sattelite signals and has been working normally ever since. These events have only occurred with the reciever mounted in my car.
  7. I will be taking my Garmin Legend with on a trip to Minnesota's boundary waters canoe area. Garmin offers U.S. topo national park software that lists the BWCA. It claims to have trails, campsites, etc. Does the expert gps software have similar features? Or is there something better?
  8. I chose it because I didn't like the fact that I have to remove the battery cover in order to use the Garmin mount. (figured I'd lose it). I had to try a couple different positions in my truck to get it to keep a good signal. I found that as long as I have it up in the "greenhouse" area of my truck it worked excellent. If I have it positioned below the top of the dash board, reception was marginal at best.
  9. The way I feel about carrying a handgun is that I'd rather have one & not need it, than need one & not have it. That said, I don't understand the mentality of someone who says "I don't need one because I don't go into dangerous areas". I got news for you; the world is a dangerous place. Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped out of the bedroom of a home in a "nice" neighborhood. Every day Violent crimes are committed against people in areas that are considered by most people to be safe. The thugs aren't going to rob someone in thier own neighborhood, those people have no money. So you people can walk around in your own little "safe" world all you like. If your lucky, I"ll happen to be there with my legally carried handgun when some dirtbag tries to rape your daughter or girlfriend. Remember, the police can't do anything until AFTER someone calls them.By that time, it's too late.
  10. I had several occasions when my legend would seem to get confused & show me traveling at very high speed across the map screen. Once, while sitting still It showed me doing 2354 mph for several minutes, crossing several states. This was with the 2.50 firmware. Every time this occured was in my truck. I've since relocated the mount in my truck to give it a better view of the sky & have not had the problem since.
  11. but I could easily have done several more. However, I guess I wouldn't want to do more than about 6 or maybe 8. I like to enjoy the areas where I am caching at, not just rush in, rush out.
  12. With all the people out there buying GPSR's specifically for the purpose of geocaching, it seems that the manufacturer's of these units should offer some level of support to the sport. My legend has a geocache icon, so they apparently recognize the popularity of geocaching. What does everone think?
  13. I live in the Rochester, Mn area, so it shouldn't be a problem, just have to borrow a digital camera from someone. Tim
  14. I'd check to see that you are using the correct datum. See what datum your coordinates are in, and be sure to set your GPSR to the same one.
  15. I have had this happen 3 times recently. My etrex Legend will be working normally, then will suddenly show me going off course, with increasing speed. Speed will continue to increase & it will show me travelling cross country on the map page. A couple days ago it did this while I was sitting still in a parking lot. By the time it stopped it showed a max speed of 2243 mph & had crossed a couple of states in a few minutes.
  16. My old lowrance glabalnav200 will only read distance to the 1/10 of a mile, then you have to actually watch the coordinates. My Garmin Legend usually gets me to within 20 feet though.
  17. When on the satellite page on my Legend, satellites with a good signal are shown in black, no signal are plain. What does it mean when they are tan? I don't see anything in the manual about this.
  18. I would sure like to see the reports of the so-called damage done to our parks. I'd be willing to bet that any damage done is isolated & has been exaggerated by this fool. Also, I'd like to know it is known that Geocachers are responsible, or are we just the most convenient group to blame, rather than get of his publicly employed, coffee drinking butt & find out who actually is responsible. Furthermore, If I am in a national park & some park ranger wants to know what I am doing with my GPS, I will tell him it is none of his business. Carrying a GPS does not constitute probable cause to conduct ANY investigation.
  19. How can mrsnazz be so naive? No ammo or ammo can is capable of hurting anyone or anything. I'd be willing to bet he cannot come up with a single factual account of an ammo can being used as a bomb. Also when was the last time you heard of a terror attack out in the woods, where most caches are. Give me a break.
