Unusual signs found while caching

some times these trees have other tags on them giving a distance and compass direction to a survey line such as a boundary line property line corner or section lines and corners. Around here there are usually 2-3 trees such as this together.

I took this picture Saturday. The reason it is funny is because it is there to warn that the underpass can have ice on it when other areas don't. The thing now is that the trail isn't really passable because the parks people have not cleared it, although people are clearly using it. So suddenly it now states the obvious.

I do think that in India you have this kind of trafiic-sign but here in Holland (well known for its windmills, wooden shoes, cows, Gouda cheese and Amsterdam) no. So I was very surprised to see this photo in a log of my cache "waterval".

I do not understand it but somehow the free-walking cows in the field respect the sign. <_<

how would i log it? there is no number on it. <_<

As the other responses suggest, the tree itself isn't the actual benchmark. There should be one nearby, however. Look around, and if you find the other witness trees (there should be at least three total to allow triangulation) you'll be able to focus your hunt by searching between them.

approx. how far apart would these trees be? is there a distance limit?

It varies depending on what's available, but they should be relatively close to one another to allow easier use when it's necessary to verify a missing marker.

Here's a document that analyzes bearing trees in one state.

This document will likely help understand some of the terminology.

OK... Here's one you don't see every day. Actually this was taken while I was doing some virtual caching in Arlington National Cemetery. Behind the "Arlington House" the restrooms are located behind the old slave quarters... just in case you were looking for 'em.

i saw this one on the way to a cache one day, and i thought,"How did they know?"

It gave me the willies.

I only Pause at those signs, I would think most do, if everybody just stopped there, it would get pretty crowded.

I liked this sign on the Blue Ridge Parkway in NC.

I love that. I hope I get to pass that sign this summer, as I'm making plans to bike the Blue Ridge.

Here's one of my favorites...

This establishment on the outskirts of Chicago finally went out of business (I wonder why) although it was here for at least 8 or 10 years. It was even a Mystery cache for awhile (thanks to giusheri for the photo).

Witness trees and posts are used in surveying. You just found a benchmark!

how would i log it? there is no number on it. :D

you would log it with a chain saw and a truck. :D

:D My favorite yet has to be the new speed limit signs posted in Colorado Springs, Colorado. They read something like "all speed limits 25 mph unless otherwise posted", and I doubt if I have seen one of these signs yet more than fifty feet from all the other original signs that specify 35mph, 45 mph, 55 mph, etc.

Why in the hell are we paying for these new signs and whose bright idea was it to put them up?

Speaking as someone who lives in Colorado, I can comment on this.

The signs are posted whenever entering a new city/county, and in some instances, in neighborhoods. I believe the reason they post them in neighborhoods is when they have problems with speeders. This way, no one can tell the cop "I had no idea what the posted speed limit was, officer, I never saw a sign."

In other words: ignore it.

That's the law in California - speed limit not posted? It's 25mph. There is no need to put up signs telling people this, as they're supposed to be familliar with the laws that pertain to driving.. :D
