avroair Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 (edited) I have a scrounged together a cheat sheet for people interested in proposing a bid city for GeocoinFest 09. Post here if you are interested or email me for it. (it's free!). Some things people have to think about: * city needs to have a regional airport ~ many coin folks fly in * city needs to have ample hotels nearby 3-4 options, plus campsites * area attractions other than coins ~ good local geocaches or cache density are not issues (since they can be placed in the interim). * Site needs to be: * big enough for 500 people (MEGA) * indoors facility * 2-3 local coordinators to work on the project who know geocoins and the needs of coiners * needs to be cheap for attendees, not $400 hotel rooms or $60 shuttle buses etc. So if you would like to bid, post here. Remember this is a pitch... so put your city's best foot forward... bribes are not necessay. Edited August 3, 2008 by avroair
avroair Posted August 3, 2008 Author Posted August 3, 2008 This thread will be open for two weeks. Proposals would be due by the end of September.
Map Monkey Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 I'll put a tentative bid in for Brisbane, Australia....meets all the criteria fortunately. mm
Clarkbowman Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 (edited) I would think that Huntsville Al. would be a great location for such a event. With out a dought the City has all you could want and the cachers here are a great bunch. Edited August 3, 2008 by Clarkbowman
Lemon Fresh Dog Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 I'm going to seriously consider placing a bid for Calgary, Alberta. However, I do have some concerns as to whether cachers will travel to Canada? So I'll start a separate thread to solicit interest.

Need to check new passport rules. Having said that, I am all for Canada, bring it on LFD
Fiery Searcher Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Memphis, TN It has a large airport for people AND for coins, as FEDEX is there. Also, it is only 1-2 hrs drive to Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Mississippi. Lots of affordable hotels in the area and near the airport as well. Area attractions other than coins and caching include Graceland and Beale Street. I posted this on the other thread, but not sure anyone got to see it...!
Wandering Vikings Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Well, if Salt Lake can host the Olympics then we sure should be able to host Geocoinfest!
Wandering Vikings Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 Well, if Salt Lake can host the Olympics then we sure should be able to host Geocoinfest! Is there a place where we can get info on how to put in a bid, and what is involved in hosting the event? We are very interested, but need a few more details before we commit!

C A Royal Flush Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 (edited) Vegas Baby, or Henderson. We found a huge park with a man-made lake a few years ago on a cache run. Will look into finding it and see if it has rent-able areas. Any locals know what I'm referring too? Edit: Possibly Sunset Park? Edited August 4, 2008 by C A Royal Flush
C A Royal Flush Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 OK, I think it is Sunset Park that I'm thinking of. Its a county park. Here's a link. http://www.accessclarkcounty.com/depts/par...ities-info.aspx If you read the 2 Sunset Park links, it looks like they have a large frisbee golf course, fishing, large reservable areas, especially A and F, but no indoor facilities from what I can tell.
Butterfly_lady Posted August 5, 2008 Posted August 5, 2008 I'll put a tentative bid in for Brisbane, Australia....meets all the criteria fortunately. mm mmm- I could probably make that one... only a three hour flight from NZ, as opposed to 12 hours plus to US. Only 2 hours time zone change. Same day, just arriving an hour after I leave. Not like US trip when I arrive before I leave home...

Mr. Cachefinder Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Sunny Tampa Florida would be great. The FL state fairgrounds (in Tampa) has a large indoor facility. Tampa international airport is 10 min away at the most. There are PLENTY of caches. Attractions include the Hard rock hotel & casino (visible from the fairgrounds), Clearwater Beach, and Busch Gardens.

WRITE SHOP ROBERT Posted August 7, 2008 Posted August 7, 2008 Well, if Salt Lake can host the Olympics then we sure should be able to host Geocoinfest! I'd love to see a Mega Event in SLC. It coulD certainly handle it. State Parks in Utah are active in GeoCaching, so might be able to assist in the organization. I could probably even chip in a little help myself.

avroair Posted August 8, 2008 Author Posted August 8, 2008 Ok if you are proposing places, step up to the plate. I have a cheat sheet to help you get a bid started... rope in some other coin locals and brainstorm some fun innovative ideas for the event.... A riverboat down the Mississippi would be cool. (can they fit 500 people?) ~ that would be one event you won't want to be late for!

I know I'd be willing to help! I submitted a bid on the 2008 Geocoinfest for SLC. I'd love to see us get it this year. You can expect a bid from SLC, one way or another. (And it should be AMAZING. I've been planning since the last bid I put in. )

Hockeyhick Posted September 10, 2008 Posted September 10, 2008 The entire Upstate of South Carolina, with Greenville, Anderson and Spartanburg all meeting the criteria and all along the I-85 corridor. Mountains less than an hour to the North, beaches 3 hours to the South. Plethra of caches galore! An active state group, several smaller active groups throughout the state and two VERY active Upstate groups. USCGA SCSG SCGA
avroair Posted September 11, 2008 Author Posted September 11, 2008 REPEAT (I'm trying ) When does this usually take place? Thanks for giving me an hour to respond. Like PGH said: Columbus Day weekend ~ it's a holiday for some.
tsunrisebey Posted September 12, 2008 Posted September 12, 2008 When do bids need to be turned in by (deadline)? I think maybe some people would like to get to the event, experience it, see how it's run, etc. and then turn in a bid.

AtwellFamily Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 Working on bid for Denver. Had trouble falling asleep because I was so excited just putting the bid together. Working with a few other cachers and coiner to bring GCF to Denver. Things are really falling together. How many bids you have so far?
Team GPSaxophone Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 I am going to try and put a few people together to have a bid for Denver/Colorado! That's the best location suggested so far!
Ivy Dog Parents Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 (edited) During the recent board meeting of Geocaching Colorado Club an announcement was made by Joe Friday and Atwell Family that they were going to send in a proposal to hold the Geocoinfest - 2009 in the Metro-Denver (Colorado) area. The board was elated to hear the about the proposal and voted on hosting the “Meet and Greet Event” if the bid is given to Denver. Since the word has gotten out that Denver could be awarded the Geocoinfest - 2009 Event, people have come forward and said “If Denver gets the bid, please count me in. I am willing to help in any capacity needed.” YES, Denver would be a great venue for the event. S. McCoskey Vice President of Geocaching Colorado Edited September 27, 2008 by Ivy Dog Parents
River Cacher Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 (edited) I like the idea of Denver or Utah as it is a central location for alot of cachers. Edited September 27, 2008 by River Cacher
DresselDragons Posted September 27, 2008 Posted September 27, 2008 How many bids have you gotten so far? I am curious about this too...from what I have read, it looks like there are groups from Salt Lake City, Denver and Las Vegas putting together bids. Any other locations? I think there were around 6 bids submitted last year.
TMOCM Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Actual bids... just Texas. Only one actual bid, and the deadline is in 3 days, Tuesday, September 30th?
