+Wandering Vikings Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 The two finalists are: Denver and Salt Lake City Winner will be announced this year at GCF. Whoo hooo! Both are close enough that we can attend next year!
+Team GPSaxophone Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 The two finalists are: Denver and Salt Lake City Winner will be announced this year at GCF. I'd like to congratulate both the Salt Lake City and Denver teams on being finalists and ensuring the Rocky Mountains will host a mega event! Regardless of which side of the continental divide it's on, it is going to be one heck of an event. Team GPSaxophone President, Geocaching Colorado
+Joe Friday Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 Congratulations to both Salt Lake & Denver on being finalist. I have the car pack and headed towards Geocoinfest at 5 am tomorrow. See ya Saturday & Sunday. PS: Its 77 and sunny right now in Denver!
+tsunrisebey Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 2 great choices! Good thing it isn't in Montana, we have snow and rain on tap with high in the 30's and lows in the 20's. Great caching weather

+cache_in_hand Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 GCF09 in the mountains, in the fall? Oh yea! Best of luck to both of you. For the few of us unable to attend GCF08 would someone please post the winner here after it has been announced?
+Mama Cache Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 Well since I have family in park city.... GO UTAH!!!
+LionsLair Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 ok, for those of us that didn't make it to Geocoinfest, we are dying to know the outcome and where next years event is going to be hosted. So it's time for someone that knows to spill the beans.... I read a log from this years event that mentioned Miami,Ohio, but I don't think they were finalists... rumor control please!
+LionsLair Posted October 12, 2008 Posted October 12, 2008 just saw another log that said Salt Lake City!
+Team GPSaxophone Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 On behalf of Geocaching Colorado I'd like to congratulate the Salt Lake City team for winning the bid. We look forward to attending what promises to be a great event on the other side of the mountains. Team GPSaxophone President, Geocaching Colorado
+River Cacher Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I am so glad to see it is so close to Idaho and I will be able to make it.
+Joe Friday Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 I'd like to congratulate the Salt Lake City team for winning the bid. See you next year.
xboxcrazy33 Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Congrats to SLC! A little bit farther for me then Denver, but still pretty close. Can't wait!
+River Cacher Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 (edited) I'll trade you over there RC I am already getting my coins sorted out for trading and maybe i will let you take a peak before next year. Edited October 14, 2008 by River Cacher
+avroair Posted October 13, 2008 Author Posted October 13, 2008 Yes, the votes came in and I tabulated them this morning and Salt Lake City eeked by Denver, both had fantastic bids and I urged Denver to run some sort of event anyway! The final voting was based on a 10 question list with each committee member voting their preference on each question. GCF this year had over 600 people, from over 33 states, and well over a cool $1 million dollars worth of geocoins in the room! Special thanks to Dressel Dragons and TMOCM and PGH for putting on a show! And thanks to all the venders who came out for the event. It was an outstanding success...
+firennice Posted October 13, 2008 Posted October 13, 2008 Do we have a date? Aug/Sept would be quite a bit warmer. Plus Oct is rifle hunting season for elk/deer for those wanting to wander about the mountains.

I just suggest that everybody bring a winter coat. On Columbus Day weekend this year, SLC had snow. Only for 2 hours, and then it melted, but we did have snow (and usually do.)

I will keep people updated asap. The 5 inches of snow in both Denver and SLC gives one a moment of pause, wouldn't want to be snowed out again!

Orlando Florida looks like a great place for a winter event! I'm not one for 'caching in the snow'! ugh Maybe global warming will hit SLC by this time next year!
+fairyhoney Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 YEE HAW ! There is hope that I can Now go. Here's hoping that THE Blues won't have snow. Our mountains have already had some . Gotta try to car pool this time or at least caravan
+9Key Posted October 14, 2008 Posted October 14, 2008 Congrats to Salt Lake City! Yes, I'll be there!
+Mama Cache Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Congrats to Salt Lake City! Yes, I'll be there! WOW! 9key. I am going to hold you to that.
+avroair Posted October 15, 2008 Author Posted October 15, 2008 Congrats to Salt Lake City! Yes, I'll be there! You had better be! You skipped out on the first two!
RedShoesGirl Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 YEE HAW ! There is hope that I can Now go. Here's hoping that THE Blues won't have snow.... and driving The Blues with snow is not fun, i speak from experience! (oh, that's what folks mean by i "needed studs and chains.") close enough for me too - barring a meltdown around that time. lara

+rivercity Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Congratulations, Salt Lake City! We're looking forward to Geocoinfest 09. We were at an event in Ogden in September, and the weather was beautiful! Can a change of date be considered, Avorair?

We were at an event in Ogden in September, and the weather was beautiful! Can a change of date be considered, Avorair? Yes, we are discussing dates, Labor Day looks like a good bet since it's a three day weekend and Columbus weekend looks to be dicey weather. Will let folks know asap.
+Mama Cache Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 I thought this was a Columbus day weekend thing? Summers seems to full. Worse case a little dry snow caching never hurt anyone! In fact many of us never left the hotel in Pa, once we got there. Just some food for thought.
+kimba off track Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Mama Cache are we sharing a room??? I will be there!!

Labor day weekend Would be great for the folks who works when school is in . Also, it really isn't fun having to worry about snow on the interstate.

Snow really isn't a *huge* concern in October, this year we had some flurries in the middle of the month but they melted off in hours in most places and within a day or so everywhere else. Two days later it was back up in the mid 60's. It is definately possible, but it's not like its a given! As a generality fall in Utah is beautiful. Warm days, cool nights and lots of sunshine- perfect caching weather!

+ECplus3 Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 Hmm. Gonna have to get passports for the younger ones, and save my pennies for gas money. But a cross-Canada trip with a stop down south on the way back sounds like a fine Fall vacation next year! Got some relatives in Victoria I haven't seen in a couple of years, and I've never been west of Syracuse in the USA. Hmm.
+DresselDragons Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 I'm hoping that I'll be able to make it because my caching buddy is a teacher and over here, our school starts AFTER Labor Day Typically, Brenda and Heather head back to school before Labor Day. My students start back after, but I go back to work before Labor Day (to get stuff ready). There is a lot of variations about when kids go back to school around here. Columbus Day weekend was chosen last year because some folks have Columbus Day off (I am not one of them, and neither are my kids). Either way, I am sure it will work out.
YemonYime Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 Yikes! Talking now about Labor Day? No can do for me. Judging from the turnout in Pittsburgh, Columbus Day seemed just fine, and I doubt that SLC shuts down in October due to weather.
+Eric K Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 I would also imagine a lot of folks may have family cookouts or other plans for Labor Day since it's a bigger holiday than Columbus Day.
+avroair Posted October 29, 2008 Author Posted October 29, 2008 The committee is still finding it's feet, so the date is under discussion. Pittsburgh was well attended in Oct, the 78 degree weather helped.
