+Cassie's Crusaders Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Just had another look and the maps are there today. Brilliant, I have missed them. Lets hope it's not a fluke and they're gone again tomorrow. If it's anything you did Edgemaster then Thanks. But thanks anyway for the work you do, for cachers like me. Quote
+fat boy slow Posted April 25, 2008 Posted April 25, 2008 Just installed it and working fine for me Thanks for this . I didn't realise how much I missed it till just now Quote
Edgemaster Posted April 26, 2008 Author Posted April 26, 2008 I've just released an update to the server-side portion of the code. New features: Google maps and satellite layers (automatically selected for caches outside of the UK) The position of your mouse is now shown more clearly in the dd mm.mmm format we all know and love. As a byproduct of this release, I also submitted a bug patch to the developers of the mapping library I use, so a bonus for them too! There's no need to do anything, the updates should appear straight away. I'm no closer to tracking down the "Image cannot be displayed" problems, my logs of tile usage suggest that there's no issue yet of the OS throttling us. Quote
+redtalut Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 What a great script, works great, thank you for you hard work. Quote

It works sometimes and not others. I'm trying to work out if it's connected with the route I take to the cache page. Last night I was setting out some new caches and I'd have OS maps on some windows & not on others. I had maps first thing this morning, but not for long and not at all now. Will let you know If I can work out when & what I do when they appear or not. Quote
+Sue and Bernie Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Brilliant! ...and a really worthwhile thread. Thank you. Quote
+martlakes Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Well done Edgemaster - really good to have the maps back, makes the planning of cache visits so much easier. The Yahoo map is useless in most places, just giving a blank patch! Glad you managed to resolve the issues with the OS. Great stuff! Quote
+molfrew-mosstoad Posted April 26, 2008 Posted April 26, 2008 Nice one edgemaster works a treat. You dont know how much you miss something till its gone. Cheers Quote
+FollowMeChaps Posted April 27, 2008 Posted April 27, 2008 I am also only getting the "Sorry this map tile cannot be served...." message both evening and morning so will look forward to an answer. Sorry Edgemaster, I've fixed it by un-installing then reinstalling. Great to have them back. Many thanks again. FMC Quote
Edgemaster Posted April 28, 2008 Author Posted April 28, 2008 (edited) I've just released version 1.3.1 to fix several minor bugs: Caches on the meridian/equator wouldn't display map. Caches beyond 8° E/W would display in the wrong location on the map. Prevent odd behaviour when loading multiple cache pages at the same time. Add version check to prompt you to update in the future. Cachebust the loaded html page. (Reviewer version for Deci) The updated version can be downloaded from here. Edited April 28, 2008 by Edgemaster Quote
+uk_searcher Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Many thanks for all the hard work! I really missed the OS maps - caching is just so much more enjoyable with real maps. Cheers. Quote
+Eclectic Penguin Posted April 29, 2008 Posted April 29, 2008 Thanks - it works a treat here. I do worry that this will be a victim of its own success though, as more people start to use it, the 30,000 tiles a day limit will be reached far sooner. Quote
Edgemaster Posted April 29, 2008 Author Posted April 29, 2008 The maximum usage we've hit so far is 8452 on Sunday. Quote

wondalfo Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Hi, I stumbled over this script in the OSM diaries. I installed it sucessfully, but I saw only an empty OS map on a cache in Dresden, Germany. Is this script only working in UK? The OS map for Dresden is nearly perfect, so this is not the problem. Thanks Wolfgang Quote
andy_the_rocketeer Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Is this script only working in UK? It works for Germany too, although the UK OS map is not applicable there, so you'll just get blank for that option. In UK it should default to UK OS maps, and for caches outside of UK should default to Google maps. Click on the + in top right to change maps (Google + OSM should work). Works for me for caches in and around Darmstadt. Quote
+The Mad MG's Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Just been having a play with it and it works a treat. Thanks Quote
+Cassie's Crusaders Posted May 2, 2008 Posted May 2, 2008 I'm sorry Edgemaster, But I still can't get the OS maps. just the 'Tile cannot be displayed' message, I can view all the other map options, just not the OS openspace. I've uninstalled , reinstalled, severals times and don't know what else to try. I did see them briefly and spasmodically for one day, but not since. The other greasemonkey add-ons I use work ok. Do you do a duffers guide for totally helpless cachers like me? I really do miss the OS maps especially when everyone else says how easy it is to get in going. Thanks for any feedback Linda Quote

I'm now hoping that Bambography, son Chris, can sort it when he's here next weekend. I'll give up until then. Thanks Linda Quote
+currykev Posted May 3, 2008 Posted May 3, 2008 Works a treat. It even now shows a perfect map of recent caches found in Thailand.I can't check how it prints out on the cache page until I get to work on Tuesday though. THANKS Quote
Edgemaster Posted May 3, 2008 Author Posted May 3, 2008 Odd, I'm watching this thread but I've not been emailed recently about it.... wondalfo: I'll release a version that allows you to default to OSM soon. Cassie's Crusaders: I still have no clue what's wrong, sorry, I may try and put together some tests when I'm less busy. But for now, check that there's no adblocker acting against the script's image loading. currykev: Printing the markers is still buggy - due to browser limitations. Quote
+PopUpPirate Posted May 4, 2008 Posted May 4, 2008 Working brill, thanks Edgey! Is there an easy way that we can make it default to the bigger map? Quote
Edgemaster Posted May 21, 2008 Author Posted May 21, 2008 I've just been informed that recent site changes have broken the script again. Luckily, half term next week gives me a break from my exams, and I'll be able to work on it then. Quote
+Firth of Forth Posted May 22, 2008 Posted May 22, 2008 It's very annoying!! It's only by keeping an eye on this forum and spotting a relevant thread that I can be sure to find out when and how to get the OS maps back. Would there be an easier way to keep updated on the OS script? Quote

I'll revise it so it throws a banner up if it can't find the map to replace. Quote
+Eclectic Penguin Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 (edited) Just wondering... is it possible to be fixed with the new Google maps? Good as they are and a vast improvement on the Yahoo maps, they're still not a patch on the OS maps. I still can't get OS maps to work on the main page but it turns up when I ask for a printable page. Edited May 29, 2008 by Eclectic Penguin Quote
Edgemaster Posted May 30, 2008 Author Posted May 30, 2008 The fixed version is now available here. It also now remembers whether the map was last big or small, and defaults to that. Apologies for the late release, this week has been unusually busy for a half term. Quote
+Bear and Ragged Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Worth the wait! And the additional waypoints are shown again. Thank You! Quote
+Eclectic Penguin Posted May 30, 2008 Posted May 30, 2008 Thanks once again, Edgemaster! The OS maps never left the printouts this time - but it's great to see them on the surfing pages once again Quote
+Just Roger Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 many thanks for once again repairing this script. Perhaps, one day, Groundspeak will stop breaking it with such monotonous regularity. Quote
+martlakes Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Hmmm. Not working for me I'm afraid. First time it's ever not installed and worked ok. The other geocaching scripts are all fine. Using Firefox 2.0.0.3 on a Mac. I'll try again. Quote
+The Hornet Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Working perfectly for me on Firefox 2.0.0.14 Many thanks Edgy, you should be in line for quite few pints (beer, coke, whatever is your poison) for this utility. Quote

+MartyBartfast Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 Works for me with FIrefox 3.0b5 on Linux. Quote
+martlakes Posted May 31, 2008 Posted May 31, 2008 I noticed that all the other scripts aren't working now either Fiddled about with re-starting, turning Greasemonkey on and off. No luck. Just noticed the little monkey in the bottom right in the page frame - looking rather sick and sad. Point my mouse at it and it tells me it's disabled. Click it and it's looking colourful and with a smile! Oh look, everything works again now!! I must have managed to accidentally click the monkey and disable it. So, all working well again - really great to have the OS maps back, although I was almost getting used to the Google ones - better than the useless Yahoo ones. But OS ones are the biz and just give such a clear view of where the cache is going to take you. The location of the additional waypoints is also very useful - where's the parking in relation to the cache? (It would be good if Groundspeak included the add ways on the google map for those unlucky enough not to know edgemaster!) Thanks edgemaster - your dedication and skill is appreciated! Quote
Smifys Posted June 1, 2008 Posted June 1, 2008 Wow. Nearly didn't bother with htis as I don't run Firefox.... OS maps MUCH better. Thanks. Carl. Quote

+SEJ & B Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 I have just finished making changes to the Map Substituter script and am pleased to announce version 1.3.0. I am trying to build this into more of a generic maps substituter, so will eventually allow maps to be shown from many different providers. For the moment, it currently only displays maps from the Ordnance Survey (50k scale), and OpenStreetMap (just because I want to spread the word of their excellent work some more!) I will accept requests for more providers - I can probably add just about any that is requested. The Geocaching Map Substituter (formally Enhanced OS Map Substituter) is a user script for Greasemonkey (Mozilla Firefox v2+) It aims to replace the static Yahoo map on cache pages with an interactive slippy map that offers a selection of different map layers to view. (At the time of publishing this includes: Ordnance Survey OpenSpace, OS New Popular Edition (1940s), and OpenStreetMap) If there are any feature regressions, bugs, other issues, please feel free to post here, this is almost a complete rewrite, so I expect there to be bugs! You should probably uninstall the Geocaching Enhanced OS Map Substituter before installing this. Install from http://edgemaster.geocache.org.uk/geocachingmaps.user.js (Thanks to StuartP for setting me up with some webspace) Can someone please help me I am sooo not good with computers! I've clicked on the link, opened and run the program, and have all this writing on 'notepad', I've tried to read through it but just don't understand it. What should I do now? Many thanks, Emmeline Quote

Edgemaster Posted June 29, 2008 Author Posted June 29, 2008 Mozilla Firefox and Greasemonkey are absolutely required to use this maps script. Quote
