  1. Looks handy, but the only resort on the list that I frequent is Portes du Soleil, but I know the pistes there like the back of my hand. Nothing for Sölden, Sella Ronda and Wengen which is where I'm going this season. Maybe I should map it and add it. Still need to use the openmtbmap maps in anger too.
  2. 3 other hobbies/interests/activities to get fanatical about. I go through a phase every so often of finding a few, but I couldn't do it as my 1st or only fanatical hobby. There's so many caches around here that 1. i'd go insane trying to find even half of them, and 2. the vast majority will still be there next month, and 3. the FTF is logged usually within minutes of going live around here, so there's little incentive to find new caches quickly.
  3. 200 within 6km (3.75 miles) 500 within 14.2km (8.8 miles) 7777 within 80.5km (50miles) (all non premium member only)
  4. Well within hours of signing up, and *before* anyone even knowing about it, I had "followers" all with IDs that wouldn't really be that of a normal user. If I look at their account, they had 1 post, registered less than 2 days earlier, and were following say 1000 people many with what could well be consecutive IDs on yahoo. That sounds too fishy for me. All twitter and facebook etc. need to do is remove the "friend finder". What normal person would be insane enough to give their login details to another party anyway????
  5. I signed up. Got too many random people following that account. Then worked out that it's little more than an elaborate way to validate random yahoo, gmail, hotmail etc. email addresses for spammers mailing lists. They already sign up multiple yahoo accounts. They add multiple addresses from spam list to it. Then sign up to twitter/facebook etc. Then do the "check if any of my friends from yahoo are on twitter/facebook". If it comes up positive, then your email address goes on a list that sells on the scammers black market for more money than a list of random addresses.
  6. Used to use Metcheck, but it does seem to be a bit less accurate than it used to be. Strange, cos most sites like that just derive a forecast straight from the GFS data. Weather.co.uk is the most inaccurate one I've come across. The only one I've seen forecast 15C and Snowing in summer. Anything more than about 3 days in the future is not worth relying upon, which is especially evident when you see the rapid deviation in the underlying GFS charts that all these service use. Only when there's a big slow moving high stuck over Europe can you rely on the post 3-day forecasts. If you can read GFS ensemble charts then WetterZentrale is handy (I use that for snow forecasting in the alps). http://85.214.49.20/wz/pics/MS_746_ens.png (replace the 746 with your nearest coordinates eg that chart is for 7 deg East / 46 deg North) Top Lines are temperature and bottom lines are Precipitation. For caching, MTBing, Skiing/Boarding, etc. in general we are looking for correlation between the precipitation curves, and in the case of skiing a correlation in the tempereature too (preferably cold rather than warm).
  7. Brizzle sounds fine. Not been there for yonks. My only constraints are that it must be close to an airport, and must not be the weekend of the English Bank Holiday (the weekend before would be very convenient though, for a camping event, mega or otherwise)
  8. With your first UK cache this year as well At least I have an excuse for that bit I just need to get a round tuit.
  9. Well my stats are 5 years and 5 months and 5 days to reach the massive total of 30
  10. There is of course the nettle eating contest... http://www.bbc.co.uk/dorset/content/articl...g_feature.shtml I won't post the official link, since that is for an enterprise which provides food and drink in exchange for bank of england money tokens
  11. I know there's some workaround to get OSM maps onto the VistaHCx. Anyone know if this is possible with the Colorado too? Just about to order a Colorado as a late birthday present for myself
  12. It works for Germany too, although the UK OS map is not applicable there, so you'll just get blank for that option. In UK it should default to UK OS maps, and for caches outside of UK should default to Google maps. Click on the + in top right to change maps (Google + OSM should work). Works for me for caches in and around Darmstadt.
  13. I added in 2 extra lines, in order to limit the use to UK / IoM. That way there's no need to disable the script for caches in areas outside OS area. Maybe there's other countries to to add to the list (Jersey/Guernsey/Ireland?). Not sure if it's working properly, since it seems the normal GC provided mappy thing is bust? (I get empty box, even when script disabled) Feel free to use it, and improve it. I just added it in the "If any of this fails, return without doing anything to the page" section. var country = document.getElementById("Location"); if (!((country.innerHTML == "In United Kingdom")||(country.innerHTML == "In Isle of Man"))) return;
  14. Hmmm I thought the point of a flashmob is that all the participants appear from nowhere at the designated time/location, do whatever was planned, and then disperse back into normality just as quickly. So if the plan is to meet in a pub before and after, then surely it's not even a flashmob, so why not just make the pub meet the event? Failing that, let someone else register the pub meet as a separate nearby event?
  15. The JS image overlay is a very annoying gimmick - don't like it at all. At least it is triggered by mouseclick and not rollover. Any way to turn this feature off? In the googlemaps, the marker bubbles look much better, and correctly flag 'found' caches (which has always been wrong for me). Except when you rollover a bubble, it turns deep red and totally obliterates the content. Nice to have a subtle highlighting, but not deep red! Also comes up with an error log at the bottom: 16:52:17:566Image Found Error: 4 16:52:17:588Image Found Error: TypeError: x has no properties 16:52:17:596Image Found Error: 6 16:52:17:601Image Found Error: TypeError: x has no properties 16:52:17:609Image Found Error: 13 16:52:17:614Image Found Error: TypeError: x has no properties Finally, not exactly part of the upgrade, but for the weekly alert email, it would be nice for user to be able to fine tune which info they receive... eg turn on/off mega/event caches, and set the radius for new cache alerts. The mega ones are mostly on a different continent, and half of my nearby event caches are half way across EU, and I don't care for caches 100mi away, although someone would possibly want >100mi.
  16. Overlaid greyed-out image display is really annoying actually. And IMHO the rollover/hover pop-up image display is even worse. Fortunately all other forums/sites I use that have that feature have the decency to allow the user to turn it off. Just another web2.0 'me too' thing imho. Looks pretty, but a right pita if you want functionality. Has the forum code changed too? Now to quote, you have to toggle and then go to reply. Every other forum i've used, if you hit quote, it goes directly to the reply message editor, and pre-inserts the quote. Not sure I like that either, but guess it could be more useful for quoting multiple messages. Edit: In addition, I see the Googlemaps bit now looks better, and correctly shows the find status, which it didn't before. But rollover colour which totally obliterates the bubble icon contents has to be a bit of an oversight.
  17. Used to be in the youth section of a camping club down that way many moons ago. The places we used to frequent were... Brands Hatch Race Circuit, a place just south of Goudhurst on the road to Bedgebury Pinetum (forget the name), A school for asthmatic kids in Seaford (they used to challenge us to a footy match, and usually beat us 20-0), Blackland Farm Guide Camp (now more of an activity centre i think), and Wilberforce Scout Camp near bromley (we were not scouts, but we used to camp there, and had food prepared for us indoors as it was winter camp). August is school holidays though, so a busy time. Plus my camping trip is in Scotland at that time. Dunno if any of that helps.
  18. I recommend 2 things... 1. Eat More Pies - need a little bit more potential energy to convert into kinetic energy 2. Go to the Equator - you can use the earths rotation to get an extra bit of initial velocity (you think I joking don't you ? ) Would this be classified 5 for terrain ?
  19. I *think* you hold PAGE, and then power ON to do a forced cold start. IIRC, this combo is in the manual (but I've lost mine, so can't confirm) I *think* ENTER+PowerON do a complete hard master reset, and wipe all data, and revert to manufacturer defaults. Service Mode is UP+PAGE+PowerON (not a lot to see/do, but it does tell you the temperature of the oscillator, and the voltage of the batteries). Key combo there can also do the master reset. After cold reset, leave it out in satellite visibility - it'll take a while to lock! Disclaimer: do this at your OWN risk, and only if you are prepared to lose all settings, data etc.!!! I may be wrong with those key combos, and not willing to lose the data on mine to verify!
  20. Tetanus is one that if you go to A+E for certain things, they will just give it to you automatically IIRC. I had one done at about the correct 10 yr interval, and then turned down one in A+E, after needing face sewn back together by a short sighted nurse, following an unplanned deviation from the road whilst cycling 'briskly'. Then when working in Holland had to go to South America jungle for 3 months, so needed the entire tetley teabag experience. The 3 way DPT one gave me a bad reaction, apparently because the 10 years for the previous tetanus can mean anything from 5 to 15 years. Still - I got DPT, Typhoid, Hep-A/B, and Yellow Fever (but declined Malaria tabs, which are next to useless, and make diagnosis a PITA) all for free (the jabs that is )
  21. hmmm 88195. Can't believe I reg'd in 2002. Spose I really ought to go out and find a few more caches to justify a 5 digit no.
  22. Thong, Dancing Dicks, White Knobs Way Edit: at my uk address of course
  23. Many many hotels, particularly business ones, in lieu of filling in the registration card will just get you to sign the registration card and take a copy of your passport. This sounds very potentially very dodgy to me. And of course what will you be paying with when you check out? (I pay cash ) As for petrol stations, I got a block put on my card for 'possible fraudulent use' related to a petrol station just outside Ipswich.
  24. 2 slight problems there... Edit: fixed the logic GCCCxxx would map to GCCxxx (ie look like an existing 6char ID) Probably not a major issue, as the chance of doing 2 caches with the same last 3 characters is going to be rather remote, and would need to be consistent to convert all existing 6digit codes to G+4digits. 2nd problem is, I don't use GSAK and don't use windows either. Although I'm sure someone can make use of this tweak. Anyone know if more recent GPS devices (eg 60CSx) have a more reasonable waypoint name length? Was tempted to upgrade, but need a real justification first, cos the Etrex has all the basic functionality that I need, for 3 different hobbies.
  25. I don't use GSAK. Removing the GC bit then makes caching waypoints all over the place in the various pages within the waypoint menu, rather than all under G. I'll spend about 5 seconds to write a Linux/bash conversion script for the .LOC file. In fact sed -e "s/\"GC/\"/g" geocaching.loc > geocaching.loc should do the trick.
