Start your own Internet ammo box store:

This is a government surplus auction for 3552 5.56 mm ammo cans. The starting bid is $35. That's a heck of alot of caches...

It would probably be less than the shipping charge for 3552 "Official Geocache" stickers purchased from the Groundspeak store.

(Keystone waits for "cease and desist" letter from Rothstafari.....)

Cease and Desist!!!

Step 5 of 6: Billing and Order Summary

Qty SKU Item Price Total

1184 5 x 10 Cache Sticker 730402 GEO - Green $1.99 $2,356.16

Subtotal: $2,356.16

Shipping & Handling Cost (UPS Ground): $10.06

Sales Tax (WA Tax): $208.23

Total: $2,574.45

I could only purchase 1184 of them but look...1184 x 3 = 3552 and wow, the shipping charges would only be approx $30. I don't know about you but it is the WA state sales tax that kills the deal for me.

Though, the given condition is stated as "Unserviceable - condemned/ reparable". I wouldn't think that's a good starting condition for a cache in the wild. Plus, who want's to deal with the UPS guy when he/they show up with all these ammo cans. Just imagine what the neighbors would think..... :D:huh:

It's really a ploy by 'THEM' to snare unsuspecting terrorists by offering these at such a great price.

The expectation then would be to find these randomly hidden in the forests/riverbeds/city parks, expecting average citizens and Girl Scout Troops to happen upon them, winding up covered in white powder that smells/taste suspicously like powdered sugar when they spray from the air-tightness of them.

 This site is cool 345 refrigerators for$35, of course you'd have to drive to new mexico to get them! There are 22 lots of ammo boxes of various sizes, shapes and quantities. They all look pretty beat up though.

From the auction

"DRIVERS LICENSE, VEHICLE REGISTRATION AND PROOF OF INSURANCE"

what does that have to do with anything?

Item Location: 2391 Gas St.

Ft. Leonard Wood, MO 65473-5820

You don't think they let just anybody walk on base without ID, do you? I needed to show ID one time to walk 5 feet inside the gates, in full view of the guardshack, to get the answers to a virtual cache.

Typically with these auctions, after the auction closes, you have a certain amout of time (3-30 days) to pick up your items. How you do it is up to you. However, you have to have proper ID before entering the base with a large truck. Think about it...

Surely some geocacher is a truck drive who could go pick those babies up. If we all chip in a little, we could have a hundred or so each, if we win. Heck, re-sell some to you local Army Surplus store and make a couple bucks

why are all the lids off? I wouldn't mind getting 25or so regular size ammo cans and about 5 of those giant grenade launceer ones you know 11x12x24 that would make a great cache, you think? Hey someone should by all 3 thousand someodd ammocans and make a giant multi cache with thousands of legs :D:huh:

At lunch, David suggested that someone buy these, put them all in a barn somewhere, and then make the location a cache. Imagine the people showing up looking for the cache and finding thousands of ammo cans!

And the one in the middle is the real cache.

Actually, I could see setting out a palate in the woods and calling it a seed cache...the prizes are ammo cans...use the good ones to make your own caches.

T ammo can L about $2 in change SL....

I don't have the capital to start this cache though.

This batch of ammo cans looks like it's in pretty good condition. That's a lot of geocaches! Seems like a reasonably manageable number though.

Those are located in Hawaii. That makes shipping even more interesting!

Wow! Has anyone noticed the rare posting appearance of two "hooters" in this one thread? I wonder what is so special about this topic? By rare, they have fewer posts since 2000 than some who've been here only a couple months. <_<

The cheap ones at the hobby stores are $65, so I'd say that's a good price. I'm sure the military didn't buy the cheap model.

(I just saw that it was originally purchased for $1,500)
