+Jolly Roger Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 So my group and I have designated the GPSr as "Ziggy." For those unfamilar with the show Quantam Leap, Ziggy was a supercomputer that was linked through a little handheld device that never seemed to work quite like Al, the operator, wanted. lol I just thought it was appropriate but I was curious is anyone else has a nickname for thier handheld. JR Quote
+TMDMom Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Mine is Elroy. It's a Jensen brand, sounds like Jetson... Quote
Mr.Yuck Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 but I was curious is anyone else has a nickname for thier handheld. No. You're the only one. Just kidding. I think about 50,000 geocachers call their Magellan "Maggie". Quote
+DENelson83 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Heck, how about a Garmin device being nicknamed "Rusty", since the last name of one of the founders of Garmin is Burrell (People's Court reference). Quote
+briansnat Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 I often refer to my 60CSX as Gary Garmin. "Gary Garmin says turn left, so we're turning left" "How far away does Gary Garmin say we are?". Now that we have a Magellan for the car (a piece of junk BTW) it's Marty Magellan (Maggie Magellan was too obvious). "Marty Magellan doesn't have a sat lock", "Marty Magellan says turn right, but there is no road there", "Marty Magellan is trying to take us the wrong way on a one way street". Quote
+Batona Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 As mentioned above, my Magellan is known as Maggy. My Garmin is known as Rocky. FWIW, the kayak is named Lucy. Quote
Clan Riffster Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 My 60CSx is "The Great & Powerful Oz". My iQue 3600 is "The Wench". Quote

I think about 50,000 geocachers call their Magellan "Maggie". We have the Magellan gold that we call "Golden boy" The one for the truck we call "Mona" after the one in the movie RV. Quote
+StarBrand Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Its an age old question - from Jan 2002: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...=name+your+unit Quote
+sbell111 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Cathy named my Quest 'Ginger'. She named her Q2 'Julie'. My Venture Cx has no name because 1) it doesn't talk, and 2) Cathy doesn't use it. Quote
+paulandstacey Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Our first gps was an Explorist 100 that Stacey named Harriet. We got an Explorist 210 a few months into our hobby which she promptly named Bill. As to why she chose these names, even she hasn't the foggiest. Quote
Mushtang Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 My Vista Cx is named Dee Dee Doodle, after the female member of the children's show The Doodlebops. As I'm following the turn by turn directions it beeps at me and almost sounds like "Dee Dee Doo". Quote
Shiraz-mataz Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 It doesn't have a name per se but I often refer to my GPSr in log entries as "my (not so) trusty yellow Etrex." And when I'm around my geo-buddies with their fancy units with color maps I'll add, "my approved for use by the Amish (not so) trusty yellow Etrex!" Quote
+Thrak Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 No nickname. I did refer to it as "the geomacaching machine" the other day though. Gotta love Homer Simpson. Quote

+torossi Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 For our Garmin Street Pilot my kids affectionatly call the female voice "the GPS lady" I like the "Ziggy" title for your handheld!! Quote
+ridilen Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I have referred to my 60CSx as Dr. Theopolis. Since I carry it around my neck. Anyone remember Dr. Theopolis??? Quote
+Scooter Bill Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 My 60csx is named "Dudley" because of the sound he makes during turn-by-turn. "Dudley. Dudley" That means, "Dudley says, "Turn right here." Or "Turn left on Dudley Road." Quote
+Harriet the Spy Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 (edited) My 60CSx is "The Great & Powerful Oz". My iQue 3600 is "The Wench". LOL my Ique is "Bossy" but her battery has been crapping out lately, so she might get a name change.... and my Colorado is "Sugar" Edited March 18, 2008 by Harriet the Spy Quote

+Jolly Roger Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 I should add that Ziggy is a Colorado 400t. (Kinda adds to the not working quite right...) Quote
+Travelinmatt76 Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 "Sam, Ziggy says that there is a 70% chance that the geocache is 40 feet away and under a rock behind a tree." Quote
+Harry Dolphin Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 His name is Gupy Jr. (The yellow Etrex was Gupy.) Quote
+saginawmike Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I call mine Helen. As is Helen Keller. The blind leading the blind so to speak. Or, it also has got me to Helen back. Quote
+Zolgar Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I've yet to name my GPSr.. I did name my laptop though. "Timmy." I think I do need to name my GPSr though. Hmm, I'll ponder it and get back to ya. Quote
+mdplayers Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 our magellan roadmate that is normally in our Toyota Tacoma is known as 'The Voice of the Fat Chick'. The Tacoma is 'The Fat Chick' because hubby always told me that when he turned 40 he wanted a Harley and a Fat Chick. Well, he needed a new truck about that time and we got this great truck (and then got a kitten that we named Harley). So the truck was named 'The Fat Chick'. Anyway... the GPSr's don't have names.... yet. Quote
+PJPeters Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 It all depends on how well it's behaving/how easily I'm finding caches. Occasionly, I call mine some names that can't be repeated in a public setting. Quote
+Too Tall John Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 My Legend HCx is "Charlie." Occasionally when I'm following the turn by turn in the car, it'll want me to turn down a street that dead ends, is one way, is a dirt road vs a paved road, or my wife just doesn't think we should go that way. As the unit busily chirps away, the only proper response is: "Sorry Charlie!" Quote
+MarshMonsters Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 I have a yellow E-trex. I just call it my "little dude" or "little guy". Maybe after I find more caches he will get a real name. Quote
Little Hap Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 (edited) We have two GPSr. one in the car and one for geocaching. The one in the car is "Dora." Named after "Dora the Explorer." Dora is our little explorer, she gets us where we need to be. The handehld GPSr is "Dori." Named after Dori in the movie "Finding Nemo." She can't remember things and goes back and forth and back and forth. Well, sometimes I feel like my handheld leads me one way then changes...oh wait, back to the right again... 50 feet away. Wait, 3 feet. And so on. So basically, I feel like I'm Dori out there in the woods, not too sure where to go unless Dori can make up her mind. Edited March 18, 2008 by Little Hap Quote

bradnlinds Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 My sister calls my dad's Nuvi Gertrude P. Smith... We haven't really named our handheld. But the Nuvi 600 is called "the lady in the machine/box" which I think is better than the five letter word, synonomous with female dog that my dad calls the one he and my mom have. Haha. Quote
+Kryten Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 A long time ago. the oil tanker on which I was serving was fitted with first generation satellite navigation receiver. Made by Magnovox the box was immediately nicknamed "Maggers". Oh what a system, wait several hours between each position fix with guesswork in between. Now we have a continuous stream of positional fixes and moan when it doesn't work under trees. Quote
+DonB Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 So my group and I have designated the GPSr as "Ziggy." JR I haven't hung a name on my handheld, but when we got our first SP III I was told the voice they used was the voice of a woman that worked for Garmin named Betty, so that's what we called it. I don't know if there's any truth to the story or not. Our 2820 we call Jack because that's what Garmin calls the voice we use. Quote
+SassyGingerNinja Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I promptly named our Nuvi "NuNu" although she is called other terms when she's moody or confused. Our handheld is an eTrex Vista HCx and we call her "Vista," although I'm thinking of changing it to "DB" for drunken bee! Quote

rogheff Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 (edited) I am the proud owner of the INFAMOUS 1942 Philco Problematic GPSr. The 1942 Philco Problematic doesn't use satelite signals like your machines do. It triangulates the signals that bounce off of the watertowers in Racine, Milwaukee and Paddock Lake, Wisconsin. It is...shall we say...less than accurate. My Gpsr is well known locally and even has a few geocaches named after it: Remembering the 1942 Philco The 1942 Philco Problematic Edited March 19, 2008 by rogheff Quote
+TrailGators Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 (edited) I've never named my GPS until now but "Hal" will be a good name in honor of Arthur C. Clarke, who passed away yesterday... Edited March 19, 2008 by TrailGators Quote
+Silny Jako Bek Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 I don't have a name for the GPS I take out in the field with me, but my Nuvi that directs me as I drive I call "The Dashbroad". Quote
+El Diablo Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 My Streetpilot is named "The Dutchess". My wife named her Nuvi "Daphne" after the character on "Frasier" because she has the voice set to British-English. Neither of us have names for our 60Csx's. El Diablo Quote
+geos of the jungle Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Our first gpsR was named Bilbo. Our current gpsR is Frodo. Quote
+gof1 Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 The wife named her Nuvi Rosie. I have no idea why. Quite often she can be heard to say things like "Rosie, is it ok if I wait 'till the light turns green?" Quote
+UBC Geograd Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Mine is named GePuS.. Kinda like Jeebus, Homer Simpson's deity of choice. Quote
crawil Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 We did name our Lowrance iFinder Map & Music after having a family consultation - Gus. We started with "GPS" and ran through the vowels. GaS, GeS, GiS, GoS, GuS and GyS. Only "Gus" made sense and it stuck. My 7yo son calls the in-dash unit in my folk's car "Marge" from the Simpsons because she's always nagging! Quote
+ethanbl Posted March 20, 2008 Posted March 20, 2008 I named my new Magellan eXplorist 500le (which sucks, should have done more research before buying ), Dudley, because it's a dud, and it doesn't work the way I want it to, but I was thinking about naming it Brick, because that's basically what it is, a brick with a screen and controls, that cost me $120.00. MAGELLAN STINKS: GO GARMIN!!!!! Quote
