Peanuthead Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Waiting for the Geocaching Server ... It's like waiting for Ketchup to pour out of the bottle, without cheating by tapping on it or inserting a knife.
Sparrowhawk Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Yup.... (starts singing) "server is down down down down down server-dooby down, down down, down down, whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa!!!" As I say in my job to folks struggling with their computers, "now you know why they call it a 'cursor'"! Also reminds me of a good geek story that actually happened... Some admins were sitting and talking at a Denny's type place after a hard day of struggling with some load balancing. They were blowing off steam about this one server they were dealing with. Swearing about it, angry about it just going on and on. After awhile, the waitress could not stand it anymore, and came over in tears, almost crying about what she'd done wrong for them to talk about her like that? They stopped dead and blinked at her... Trying to explain that they didn't mean HER as the server, but instead their darn computer work was hilarious!
Team Perrito Blanco Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Why can't they do this stuff at 3:00am or something? I'm going through withdrawl symptoms!
ThePropers Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Yup.... (starts singing) "server is down down down down down server-dooby down, down down, down down, whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa!!!" That's actually really funny, and may explain the slap I got when I was talking about how absolutely HUGE our server was. Ok, that didn't happen, but with the site down and all, I got nothing else to do but make up stories.
ThePropers Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Why can't they do this stuff at 3:00am or something? I'm going through withdrawl symptoms! No kidding. Don't make me go to YouTube and watch some horrendous videos of people who think they are interesting! I'd much rather hang out here with people who think they're interesting. Present company excepted of course
Pablo Mac Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Don't make me go to YouTube and watch some horrendous videos of people who think they are interesting! This is always interesting:
The Herd Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Yup, I'm officially frustrated! It WAS working, s...l...o...w...! Get excited that I MIGHT actually be able to get my loggin in...and voila...5 from being done, it goes down again!
SESCubed Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 (edited) Alexa.com gives the site pretty good numbers. To handle this traffic I'd think they need something in the neighborhood of 18-20 cpus. My buddy owns a site ranked at 10,000 on alexa. But that is based upon experience with a bizzy freebsd site. A microsoft based server may need more resources. A ton of things could cause this. HDD's breaking down, RAM busted, with this many machines and this many CPUS/HDD/RAM.... many hardware issues could be the root. I do NOT envy the server master on this one. But IMNSHO itfeels like a hardware issue. ==========alexa numbers Geocaching.com geocaching.com The Global Headquarters for the Sport of Geocaching. This website includes a large database on caches to hunt down (currently over 200,000), along with general information on geocaching and discussion forums related to geocaching and gps technology. Avg. Review for geocaching.com: 5.0 of 5 stars Traffic Rank for geocaching.com: 3,605 Edited October 27, 2006 by SESCubed
Prime Suspect Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Frustrated? No, not me... But at least you had time to dig up some clip-art from the 1980s.
ventura_kids Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 The site is getting faster..... It now crashes on Thursday instead of Friday... nice.
Okiebryan Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Frustrated? No, not me... But at least you had time to dig up some clip-art from the 1980s. Ain't google images just totally awesome? Fer sure.
Hynr Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 ...dead again... (at 11pm Pacific Time, on a Thursday) ...not a good sign.
Amtraker Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 2:20pm Pacific and STILL down!!! Argh!!!!! This is NOT good for a web site that takes subscriptions! Our subscriptions should be extended by the number of hours geocaching.com is not available!! A ton of things could cause this. HDD's breaking down, RAM busted, with this many machines and this many CPUS/HDD/RAM.... many hardware issues could be the root. I do NOT envy the server master on this one. But IMNSHO itfeels like a hardware issue. ==========alexa numbers Traffic Rank for geocaching.com: 3,605 Thanks for the pointing out alexa traffic info... Properly designed busy web sites should not go down due to hardware issues like those described above. Busy web sites should have redundant everything and pratically never be down (e.g. load balancers, redundant servers, RAID arrays to avoid HDD problems, etc.) Our company's web site traffic ranking is: 2,838 Higher than geocaching and if we were down as much as geocaching.com I would be out of a job! Interstingly my namesake's web site www.amtrak.com traffic ranking is similar to geocaching at: 3,571 Since I can't access geocaching, here's some other traffic info... Top 10 Traffic Web Sites Yahoo MSN Google Baidu.com www.qq.com Myspace www.sina.com.cn Windows Live YouTube www.yahoo.co.jp
Amtraker Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 2:45am Pacific and the site is working now! Thanks!
mrring Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 almost 5:00am in the midwest - it was done - then it was up for 10 minutes - now it is down again Is there any end in sight???
The SuzyQs Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 7am EDT, still down. Withdrawls setting in...
HBmamaG Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I really really need my favorite website. I thought it was my computer at first. I thought I had a virus or something. But, I really really need my favorite website. Oh, I already said that.
AtlantaGal Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 7am EDT, still down. Withdrawls setting in... Sigh. Do we know what the problem is yet?
Sioneva Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I'm going to get a FTF, because no one else can pull up the page and load the coords! Actually, that'd be a cheap way to do it.
stcymcc Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I'm going to get a FTF, because no one else can pull up the page and load the coords! Actually, that'd be a cheap way to do it. Yeah, a new cache came out last night around 6:30 pm Central time and it's been down pretty consistently since. So, I haven't been able to get the coords. If anyone was able to get the coords during a moment or two that the server was up (????) then they pretty much have an open shot at the FTF because of the server problem.
PeterNoG Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Frustrating! Unable to access site for the last 30 minute. Server too busy.
Luc & Sweety Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Unable to access it for the last day...Keep getting notifications but can't get co-ords!
cron Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Stop hammering the site and it may come up... If everybody continues to shift-reload the web page, it will never come up... They seem to use Windows technology, which doesn't help...
akounamatata Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 (edited) The site geocaching is still down today, what is happening???? Could'nt they hire somebody who know how to repair??? It's sincerelly frustrating, and knowing the problem last so long.... Do you have financial problem?????? Edited October 27, 2006 by akounamatata
Maingray Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Back up for me. I'm sure there was a good reason.
LeGodFather Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 (edited) I miss the days when the 3 finger salute would fix all computer problems! Edit: Working for me too now. Edited October 27, 2006 by GrosseFamille
Flooded Tree Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 This sucks! I am in Hawaii and want to find local caches! ARG!!!!!!!!!! Gonna take a while to get used to the time change.... woke up at 1:30 am
Pablo Mac Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 It's 6:20am PST, the site's up, and my pocket queries are loaded! Whoopie!
P Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Is there an award "Worst Server Performance In the World"? I would nominate gc.com.
mtn-man Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I can imagine that the site admins don't like this either. I would imagine they are pulling some long hours and pulling some hair out.
The Cheeseheads Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I'm getting this error. Maybe it's time to run down to the pet shop for some hamster chow?
mtn-man Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 I'm getting this error. Maybe it's time to run down to the pet shop for some hamster chow?
Jeremy Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 We think it may be the weekly cache notification emailer that is the culprit. Please let me know if you see any more issues today. We're continuing to investigate the situation.
Jamie Z Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Working fine for me, and may I add that I haven't had any recent problems getting onto the site. Maybe I'm just lucky. Jamie
Jeremy Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Shh... You're on the server that is exclusive to our Charter Members. Just kidding everyone.
Cache Heads Posted October 27, 2006 Posted October 27, 2006 Shh... You're on the server that is exclusive to our Charter Members. Just kidding everyone. Oh, now we see how it is!
What rock? Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 How could it be down every time I have tried to log on the past couple of days and I still have 15 pages of new posts to read?
The Leprechauns Posted October 28, 2006 Posted October 28, 2006 Because the forums are not on the same server as the GC.com database.
