+Renegade Knight Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Ok all this talk about regulars and intimidation makes you wonder what the forums would be like without regulars. Would a week be enough for the new style of forums to come out? Maybe a regular free month? I'm game. Pick the week and I'm gone. The only hard part is who are the regulars? Anyone with 250 or more posts?
+JoGPS Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 I will ride in you wagon, but try to get a week everyone would agree to………. JOE
+El Diablo Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 I'll give it a shot. I can hear the Moderators in the background cheering this thread on! El Diablo
+top pin Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Renegade, Your talking about some of these reg's having to commit suicide for this to happen..... Great idea but not gonna happen not even for one day. Unless you can get GC to actually ban all members with say over 100 posts for a week..... now that would be fun to do!! I still bet you'd see sock puppet accounts springing up all over the place......... This seems like a life for some............say anybody with 9871 posts or so.......j/k but you do know that there are only 365 days in a year and you've only been a member as of 3 days ago a whoppin 3 years........hmmmmmmmm.. Would be a great test of self control...LOL
CoyoteRed Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 I'm game. To make it more interesting, the first regular to post gets scourn reaped upon him (or her) for all of eternity or people forget, which ever comes first.
+briansnat Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 our talking about some of these reg's having to commit suicide for this to happen I don't think I'd commit suicide, but I'd be pretty bored at work. I'm working nights now and its the only thing I have to do.
5Sent Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 As a NooB, the thought of the forums without the regulars scares the cr@p out of me!!! The regulars are the ones who come up with answers to repeated questions, and requests for hints and tips with relative clarity and promptness. It's kind of nice to see a question pop up on the forums, and think 'yeah, that IS a good question' and within 5-10 minutes, there's usually an answer. And as stated before, usually a couple of wise cracks to go along with it... but that's what makes it fun in my opinion... But, I also must say, that I'm still new enough that I haven't seen the tension that others sometimes speak of... So, there's my humble opinion... I personally think it'd be kind of boring around here with out all of you... regular or not!!! :
CurmudgeonlyGal Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 RK: Anyone with, hm... more than 405 posts. -=- michelle
+carleenp Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Sure. It could be good for me. Maybe I would get in the habit of not checking the forums and just not come back. It could help me earn more neopoints too since I would go play over there. I do wonder though who would be around to answer questions from new people etc. though.
+Moose Mob Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Maybe only allow 5 or 10 posts per day? just for that week? 500 posts in 3 years isn't bad. 500 posts in a week... must be retired, on vacation, or working nights.
+Milbank Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Darn, I seen the word free and thought I could sign up for something good.
2oldfarts (the rockhounders) Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 We could all go hide in the OT forum...make new threads & have a party until the 'Newbies' pay their money for a month & come beg us to come back. So what week do we start? Shirley~
+Jennifer&Dean Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 If this happened, then the "regular" lurkers would have to start posting and figure out markwells and the such. Maybe we could have TPTB put anyone with over 1000 posts on a 7 day forum break... -J
+El Diablo Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 I do wonder though who would be around to answer questions from new people etc. though. All the forum Mods are capable of answering the questions for a week. I vote we do it Feb 1st thru the 7th. El Diablo
Jeremy Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 I could just ban everyone that has x number of posts for a week.
2oldfarts (the rockhounders) Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 (edited) I could just ban everyone that has x number of posts for a week. I want to watch and be a lurker! If you banned us for a week, would be still be allowed to watch? You could ban us to the OT forum only. Shirley~ P.S. Maybe we should do this on the week of April 1st? Edited January 19, 2005 by 2oldfarts (the rockhounders)
+Sputnik 57 Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 I could just ban everyone that has x number of posts for a week. That would mean that I need a sock puppet to lurk during the ban week. I would really like to see how Getting Started and Units and Software go without Briansnat, Markwell, CydeE, Neo Geo, etc. (Oh wait. Markwell's a mod )
WH Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 I could just ban everyone that has x number of posts for a week. Just put everyone over a certain number of posts on a 7 day moderator suspension. That way we can read the forums, we just cant reply.
+Milbank Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 I could just ban everyone that has x number of posts for a week. Yes you could.
WH Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Ok...where do we draw the line. I vote for 500 posts and up.
2oldfarts (the rockhounders) Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Our vote....anything over 100 posts. By then most people think they know a lot. Shirley & John~
+briansnat Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Our vote....anything over 100 posts. By then most people think they know a lot. Shirley & John~ I'd say it should be avg. posts per day. Someone with 100, or even 200 posts over a period of 3 years could hardly be considered a forum regular.
+Jennifer&Dean Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Anyone whose post ratio is greater than 2 per day since they started? (Go to your My Controls screen to see this ratio) -j

+El Diablo Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Anyone whose post ratio is greater than 2 per day since they started? (Go to your My Controls screen to see this ratio)-j I'm at 1.45 per day...Cool! El Diablo
WH Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 One thing you can't do is force those who don't want to voluntarily participate. The best way to handle this is to ask people to voluntarily be put on a 7 day forum suspension. Everyone who who wishes to participate may, whether they have 1 post or 11,000.

+Jamie Z Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 I'm at 2.39 per day. This includes several times when I was away from civilization for more than a couple months at a time. Heh. Anyway, I think a week off would be beneficial to me, too. Jamie

+AuntieWeasel Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 2.67 per day. But they've all been rich in volatile and pungent weasel esters.
+Jennifer&Dean Posted January 19, 2005 Posted January 19, 2005 Voluntariarly would probabkly be best... otherwise folks in Cheers would probably explode.... (sorry abt spelling) -J
WH Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 2.67 per day. But they've all been rich in volatile and pungent weasel esters. Ahhh...another winner for the Auntie Weasle Hall of Fame.
+Prying Pandora Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Hmmm... this tempts me to introduce a volatile topic just to make you guys squirm!
+Team Virginia Browns Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 I could just ban everyone that has x number of posts for a week. Then I won't be around that week, no sense in reading the forums for anything intresting.
+cache_test_dummies Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Ok all this talk about regulars and intimidation makes you wonder what the forums would be like without regulars. If some people want to voluntarily not post for a week, thats fine. But I'm not sure I see the point of this. First, anybody who generally avoids posting because they worry about having their old posts brought back out and discussed by a regular later STILL aren't likely to participate because after the week is up somebody's week-old post could still be discussed by a regular. Second, those who are intimidated will still know the regulars are watching , which, if you are easily intimidated, would still be intimidating. Third, this puts some kinda weird pressure on the regulars who choose (or would like to choose) NOT to participate in the voluntary action. Not that they couldn't handle the peer pressure, but why subject them to this pressure at all? Fourth, I really, really enjoy reading the posts from the regulars! I don't always agree, but even when I disagree I am almost always learning and being entertained. A week without them? Might be tough for me! I'm probaby taking this too seriously, so please ignore this post. Who knows, this experiment just might have some interesting results. It might end up like the Seinfeld "Master of his Domain" episode, where nobody manages to last the whole week....
+LXA_KA_1287 Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 I think I might be able to step in and help answer some questions for people while all of the regulars are gone...
+Milbank Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 (edited) I could just ban everyone that has x number of posts for a week. Could you take the total post counts away? If yes would you ever consider doing that? Edited January 20, 2005 by Milbank
+souperteam Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Darn, I seen the word free and thought I could sign up for something good. ROTF!!! I was thinking the same thing. Don't go!! I came here to learn more about this fun hobby. I'm not going to learn the good stuff from newbies like myself. Please...don't!
+Robespierre Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 I have a 2.09 average right now...darn, I just messed that up. Anyway, doing it for a week would be artificial...it would not reach any "normal" stage in that amount of time, but if ya wanna try it... As mentioned above, we'd still be watchin'.
+El Diablo Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Darn, I seen the word free and thought I could sign up for something good. ROTF!!! I was thinking the same thing. Don't go!! This has all been tongue-in-cheek. El Diablo
+Camo-crazed Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Or we could just ban them from geocaching topics ere and let them answer newbies in the getting started forum. What if your post number went over the limit during the week?
+TotemLake Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 Yeeks... All this talk about posters and such... I'm at 4.89 per day. Maybe I should stay off for a week and get that average back down to ummmmm 4.83.
+Mastifflover Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 I think just a full day 24 hours would be sufficient. Crap I just realized that I'm over 2 per day.
+Corp Of Discovery Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 1.22/day here. I think it should be anyone with more than 1/day. If your gonna cut, cut to the bone.
kayaker22589 Posted January 20, 2005 Posted January 20, 2005 I'm at .78 per day but thats just cause I lurk alot.
