Ok, while changing my .sig I thought about something.

How many people think that complaints about bandwidth are really the primary motivation behind removing images from .sigs? Within just the past couple of weeks, a lot of cachers (myself included) began including their stats image from keenpeople.com in their .sig. Knowing how TPTB have a "thing" against any type of "competitive" aspect being included in the activity, who here (besides me) thinks that they (he) had keenpeople.com images in mind when the change was made?

Conspiracy theory? Perhaps, but I think it's pretty likely.

I guess this topic answers that question!

Not everything is "revisited, analyzed and second guessed," just the things which deserve revisiting, analysis and second guessing.

The timing on this one makes it painfully obvious what the real problem was. I've never seen a single (public) complaint about signature line graphics before and suddenly it's this huge issue which requires immediate and drastic action without any consultation from the people it's affecting.

Wow. The term is moderate, not mutilate.

Seems that there's a lot of deleting going on around here lately.

I'm glad that there are no images in sig lines anymore -- I always found them to be quite annoying. Seems as though CO Admin finds posts annoying as well.

Did you miss that part in my post CO?

I did miss that part, I was wrong to read the thread and try to do something else at the same time.

Hold on, there! If this topic is just the announcement, it should be put in the announcements area where we cannot respond. This thread should be in the Geocaching.com Discussion forum instead of the General forum.

I realize you get the message across to more people by placing it here, but since you did you should expect it to be discussed.

If the TPTB didn't want input or comments with respect this change, they would simply post it on the "Announcement" board (which is locked to other forum posters). In this case they didn't. Jeremy started an open thread, so presumably he looked forward to some discussion. Why suggest that he be denied that?

(edited to acknowledge that I have just made a point similar to an earlier one made by Team Saxaphone.)

(edited again because I forgot to give my input: Thanks Jeremy!)

I have never in my life learned anything from any man who agreed with me.

Agreed. I am not a Groundspeak lackey. I will disagree if I feel compelled to do so.

In this case however, Jeremy gave the courtesy of a reason. I see no need to second guess. Frankly, some of the replies are disappointing. Joyfully heavy handed moderation doesn't help matters.

I guess this must have been handled through email, as I've never seen this complaint mentioned in the forums

You won't see a lot of things in the forums. It's awful the number of emails we get these days where people are too intimidated about posting in the forums to ask a question, or make a comment. It's one of the big reasons why we now have moderators that try to keep items on topic. Our hope is that we can make this a place where people aren't afraid to get involved in a discussion.

Frankly, it's discouraging to think that many posters here in the forums are grown adults.

Actually, on one occasion, I commented negatively on the graphic in one person's sig line because it was too wide and forced the window to scroll sideways. Personally, I also find the animated gifs quite annoying.

I would say with the crowd here, that it is why they are used. (to be annoying) I think the crowd is of a more experienced nature group of the internet. I have seen some websites that people who are making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, that use things like the animated gifs and other stuff from years ago on their sites and think it looks good.

So you're making it friendly for the newbies by alienating the people who have been here a while (and in many cases are paying customers). Great job.

Why not just create a forum that can't be accessed by cachers who have been registered for longer than 3 or six months, disallow .sigs in that forum and assign one or two mods to keep an eye out for newbies that need handholding? Seems like it'd be a good all-around solution without taking away yet another feature that your current (often paying) customers used and appreciated.

For the record, the only reason I'm still a paying member is for PQs. When I became a premium member, supporting the site was my primary motivation and PQs were secondary. I no longer wish to support what you're doing here because it seems that you're taking more things away than you're adding, but I can't get my drug (GPX files) without forking over the three bucks a month.

I realize that the .sig image change affects a very small portion of the visitors to the site, but for those who read the forums and enjoyed adding/seeing/reading .sig images it's just another straw on the camel's back - a camel that's already pretty overburdened as it is.
