So, because some people had huge graphics in sig lines we all have to suffer? Why not a polite, firm, private email asking the offender to remove the graphic?

You know, you probably have something here -- why not make an addition to the forum rules about sig lines and just put something like "Animated gifs or images wider than 400 pixels or a height more than 100 pixels are not allowed". This way the none-intrusive sig line images (like your own -- which I personally do not have a problem with -- I think it's cool) could be removed if necessary. And as you suggest, all it would probably take is a nice e-mail bringing attention to the sig line rules.

I must be getting to old.

What are IP sniffers? How were they in the forums?

I bought a GPSr so the ladies would stop telling me to get lost. It didn't work icon_frown.gif.

This was an issue on a game forum I used to frequent.

Sig images got so large and numerous that it took over a minute to load a message thread. And that was on cable! I would have hated to be a poor guy on dial up trying to read that board.

I think this is a good call. Does not mean that images are gone for good. Just remove them while some guidelines are developed.

It also helps stop those IP sniffers from farming information off the forums as well. That is probably the big reason they have been removed.

Jeremy, can you tell us how many emails you've received asking for images to be removed from sig lines?

I would think we have more people asking for virtuals to be separate like benchmarks or a leaderboard for stats. You admit that it's only been the last few weeks for the sig line thing, but the stats and virtual discussions have been going on for months, yet no action has been taken on these issues. Why did this one get such prompt attention?

Sure. I have received around 10 emails a day for the past week and a half from geocachers who read the forums. Before that it was only a couple a day (along with the hundreds of other more common questions), so it really wasn't a priority issue.

The recent formatting with the cache page introduced some string functions that could apply directly to this issue, so we decided to apply it to the logins in the forums to respond to this growing issue.

To be honest, it wasn't really that prompt. I have been wanting better control over cache pages for a while now. The GPX problems specificially initiated the code to be written, since some characters (Especially from offending word documents) were getting into the GPX files and breaking other code that was formatting it into html and other file types. Since we implemented this code, so too did we apply it to the forums.

With the continuing move over to dot net, we are starting to integrate the site and share code, which will ultimately make everything uniform. This is just one of those changes.

After implementing the change in the forums -over the past few hours I have received 12 emails thanking me for the change, but didn't want to speak up and be labled a "suck up" or "brown noser" or "lackey" (using some of the terms the emailers gave me). Apparently folks in support of Groundspeak fear retributon for the more angst ridden posters here in the forums. That is unfortunate.

That is sad to see... Some of the forum people can be rough, but one of the important things to develop in life is thick skin.

I hope some of those people read this and will try to be a bit braver. Big deal if someone calls you a "suck up" or "brown noser" or "lackey"!! Grow up! Those words are not going to hurt you.

If you have something to say, spit it out and stand your ground! This is something you should be doing in all aspects of you life, not just in the forums!!

Now please deposit 5 cents for the next 10 minutes!

Thanks for answering my first question promptly. (I'm not afraid to give credit where it is due)

One more question, since you mentioned stats: Humans are competitive by nature, why resist that by not allowing or building a leaderboard for stats here? I don't just want stats for the competition, I like to see what the cachers in my area are up to. We used to be able to check Dan's leaderboard and see where our friends were caching, now I have to follow a bunch of links to find local cachers and see what new finds they've posted.

Let me say that I agree with the decision. I have seen on these forums before that the average age of people that are here is somewhere in the neighborhood of 35. This makes me scratch my head because at times if I hadn't read this number I would have thought that the average age would be somewhere around 10-12 yrs old by the remarks on some of the posts.

I have had the pleasure to meet some super nice people through geocaching but some of the people that post on here with an argument or reply that is obviously trying to trigger someone is simply, in my opinion childish.

Folks it's time to step back and realize that things change over time and with growth. Just think that tomorrow is Saturday and I would assume that a high average of us are off work. With that in mind understand that you STILL can get up and use this site to enjoy many caches for FREE if you choose! Take advantage of it and try to loosen up a bit.

Happy caching all! Now it's time for me to get flamed, but that's ok because I got thick skin. icon_wink.gif

You got me. Probably because before the 3-4 times size images weren't as prolific in the forums. A lot of modem folks were having problems just bringing up some topics because of the number of images they were forced to download. Most avatars can be cached but the uncommon images were causing longer load times.

That is unfortunate, but I believe completely unwarranted. I have rarely seen instances of of anybody handing out "retribution" to those who support the great things done at this site by TPTB. It is more often the other way around: I have seen many instances of people berating others for voicing complaints (even on this thread).

What is more unfortunate is that I've recieved emails from users and talked to people who want me to speak out on things (because of my pro-stats stance) because they are AFRAID of retribution from Jeremy and other GC.com admin. I personally don't believe that will happen - but apparantly there are a lot of people who do think that they can't speak their mind here if it goes against the sites administration. This is a much bigger problem that 'board bullies'.

I think it's more than a coincidence this occured when the stats signature lines became popular. I may be wrong. I do wish there was some update on groups being able to create their own leaderboards - it's more than obvious that this is very popular - more and more people sign up for the keen people site every day. I've never seen one complaint about the image size of signature lines and as many newbies as we have surely there would be at least one that was unaware of 'board bullies' to post what he/she was feeling - I never saw that.

I'm also curious about Geocaching.com's stance on people charging to set up and maintain stats pages that mine data from geocaching.com. I sent an email and never heard back about that one. I'd think that this would be a bigger issue than images in sig files.

I saw the post title and haven't read any of the posts inbetween, but I assume Jeremy is taking a lot of heat over this. I'm emphatically in favor of the move. I'm sick of waiting 2 minutes for a forum page to load if I come in over a dial-up line and I'm sure all the graphics in the sig lines are part of the problem. THANK YOU JEREMY! And I think I speak for anybody who isn't using a broadband connection.

I use a dial up and have not had a problem in the last couple of weeks, until today. It has been really bad looking at threads and trying to respond. Do not know if the removal of the sig items has anything to do with it. I think it may be due to other things being update on the site. Again, if TPTB decide not to have those things on their site thats ok with me. I did kind of like them tho. I liked the stats so I could keep track of my total finds. On the 'my cache page' it includes all logs and is not just a pure found count.

Just out of curiousity, do these keenpeople.com stats graphics have anything to do with the deletion of sig line graphics? Seems that the timing for this is a bit convenient(?) as we're seeing more and more of these stat graphics on forum posts. If it is the case, why should it be a problem? It couldn't be the slightly negative article about this site that they ran on the front page of their site a few short weeks ago, could it?

Perhaps Jeremy could answer these questions as no one else really can.

The forum slowdowns lately are due to the number of users here in the forums, as told to us by InfoPop. Apparently we're running into issues with server capacity with their software, which is odd considering their clientele and the fact that our box is supposedly not shared with anyone else.

I already indicated farther up the page that keenpeople.com stats were a contributing factor.

They didn't have to say you could add images. They left that option on when they started the forums. By not turning it off, they in fact did give permission for it to be used.

That may be true, but voicing displeasure is not necesarrily showing your rear. If enough customers don't like the rules, eventually there will be competition. I beleive that competition is good for customers, but not for businesses. From a business standpoint, every disgruntled customer is lost business. As it is now, there is no viable alternative. I'm sure that eventually somebody with the knowledge, the time and the talent will create an alternative. I don't know that it will necessarily be good for gc.com OR more importantly geocaching in general.

Please do not interprete any of my posts as anti-gc.com. I agree with the majority of the decissions here. I am just vocal about the few things I don't agree with.

For clarification - is it due to 'keenpeople.com stats' or 'stats in general' ? I know it may seem obvious to you but some people may interprete that several ways.

I sent a message about pay-for-stats sites (#47904) and I was curious about that. I know this is off topic but I feel it is related in some minor way.
