Well the voting has ended. Thank you everyone that cast a vote to support your fellow San Diegan geocachers. Hopefully, one of us will bring home the prize again!!

Best of luck to Ahimsa and Trailgators for the next phase of the judging.

What am I missing??? Isn't the voting still open until the 22nd?

It's not very clear to me from reading the Jeep website, but it appears voting ended on the 1st of Nov. and the winner will be chosen on the 22nd.

Not the way I read it. The pictures aren't available until the 1st to start voting. We surely have more than 24 hours to vote! Why would they take so long to pick a winner?

I see it more that voting starts on the 1st and ends...on the 22?? At which time they finalize the math & choose the winner. I'm sure they are relatively sure who will win before the 22nd. They just keep an eye on the voting for any last minute voting rush & then update the math.

The winner is not chosen by vote alone. There is also judges who decide on how each submission rates in a few categories. The fineprint on this contest is a little confusing.

All eligible entries for each Initial Judging Period will be combined (not separated by the particular goals for that Initial Entry Period) and judged by a panel of judges composed of one judge each from Sponsor (or its designee) Groundspeak, Inc., and Rodale Inc. Entries will be judged on the following criteria with up to twenty five (25) points available for each criterion (a) Applicability to, and depiction of, Geocaching Experience, ( Creativity, and © Humor. Up to twenty-Five (25) points will also be available for the voter portion of the Contest. Fifteen potential Finalists (3 per Initial Judging Period, all of whom will receive First Prizes) will be determined by highest cumulative scores for all criteria awarded by the judges (and the voting) for that Initial Judging Period.

Yea, but they could do the other judging part early, & then just wait for the voting by us little schmucks.

If you WEREN'T able to vote a couple hours ago, I could see where you might think the voting has ended, but since you were able, what makes you think you can't still change your vote?

Who's want to join me to complete the Proctor Valley Monster Cache? (GCG0A2)

I know Team Adelos wanted to do it at a full moon.  I'm thinking next Saturday or Sunday night at about 6 p.m. I'm not sure the moon will be full then but at least there WILL be a moon.

We have a wedding on Saturday, but maybe Sunday. :( I will have to see what is gong on. I never get out as much as I want to! We have been wanting to do that one for some time. Weather has to be good though. I dont think you want to be out there if it is raining...

Adelos

Let's meet Sunday November 19 at 6 p.m. at the trailhead. All are welcome. Bring flashlights or headlamps and whatever monster-scaring devices you have.

Looks like the 19th is a Saturday and 20th is a Sunday. Wanna confirm which one?

My calendar sure looks like an '05 but it could be something else. :(

Sounds like fun!

Oops , Sunday November 20 at 6 p.m. ;)

For those of you going out, it would be nice if you took along a new coffee can, or even an ammo can for a cache--unless it has been recently replaced. When we went out, the can was getting pretty bad. This is a great cache that everyone has enjoyed and will hopefully be around for a long time to come.

I was able to vote and change my vote yesterday while I was at work but then after I got home from work, I was no longer able to change my vote (and still unable to). This is why I believe the voting ended. I could be wrong though (known to happen on a normal basis). ;)

I wouldn't worry too much about Neptune's Deposit. It's easy enough to find even if the coords are not right on. Just keep posting what you got as coords to help the next guy. Not too much traffic at that cache anyway. As I recall, it might need a new container, so that would be a helpful thing to either take care of or to post in your log for the next person to perhaps take care of....

That is true, It seemed to be the only spot the cache could be and you have to pass by there to get to where the GPSr takes you. I forgot to look at the coordinates I was at when I found the cache. ;) Guess I should pay better attention to that in the future. I think someone already took care of the cache container but never posted that they did. I barely saw the container since Rogue handled it mainly but if you look at the pictures, the container looks different than the damaged one (and I don't see any damage to it).

Would a regular size ammo can suffice? I have one I can take out there. By the way, which 'trail head' to meet at? I don't want to miss meeting so many cachers? ;) My kids are excited about meeting 'oldtimer' cachers!

So is the trail head here?

Trailhead #1

or

Trailhead #2

or ?

Ok gang, I need little help.

The primary thing I need is a cache that is hidden in a cave. Are there any around here?

There is a contest going on, and the first 250 people to complete the tasks get a free geocoin. There are 16 different categories of caches to find, and one of them has to be in a cave.

The second part of my question is this:

I am having trouble figuring out how to run searches for something specific like that. For instance, I also need a cache that has the word "River" in the title. The only way I could figure that one out was to do a keyword search. I ended up having to scroll through pages and pages to find one that was close enough to go after.

Dan-oh has a bookmark list titled "Below Ground in SD". It would be a good place to start. If you know of any that are not on the list, just let Dan-oh know and he will add them (he asked a couple pages back).

For a cave cache, there's the DAK Girls' Black Beard's Grotto down at La Jolla Shores.

And for your searching troubles, maybe searching in your GSAK database would turn up something? (Assuming you have GSAK, of course....)

Sounds good! Thanks for the heads up!

I do have GSAK, but there weren't any caches with the word "river" in my database that I haven't found yet. So, I just went to the main search page and did a keyword search. That gave me like 130 pages to go through. I just kept picking the California caches until I finally hit one close enough to drive to.

On the note of the Geocoin Challenge, one of my goals was to log a cache placed in 2003. To meet that one, I just did Kawikaturns Rancho Carrillo View cache. While I was there, I dropped off WJTB Redd. I'd had him for way too long.

Go get him, the cache isn't that difficult, so I don't want him to run of.

Definitely #2 as when I look at google earth and see the elevation change from #1 to cache start it looks like a bit of climbing up and down.

May as well start easy until we see what we're in for

Bad news is I don't think moon rises until 8:48 p.m that night so be sure and bring your headlamps!

Hi Everyone,

I am going camping in the Indian Cove campground at Joshua Tree this Saturday night Nov 19th. I will be leaving early (7am) on Saturday. I will be returning with plenty of time to join Princess Toadstool and her hiking/caching/moonwatching crowd.

The weather is supposed to be in the 70's during the day and the 40's at night. I have one space reserved which can hold 6 people.....not sure how many tents....but there are still some sites available if you would like to have your own space.

My main goal is to get to # 200 find and do some 4WD.

Please let me know if you want to come along on this quick journey.

That's a cool area! Last time I was there we hiked the 8.5 mile Boy Scout trail. We also happened to camp next to some world class rock climbers. These guys were climbing 80 foot cliffs without using any anchors! Three of them had also successfully climbed Mount Everest!

On a side note, does anyone have an Etrex Vista? If so, have you ever experienced problems with it turning off randomly even with fresh batteries? Our Etrex tends to turn off without warning. Not too sure what to make of it.

:D

I am using an Extrex Vista on loan from a coworker. It has the same problem of turning off randomly. My coworker knew of the problem and told me about it before loaning me the unit. He says he got an RMA number from Garmin at some point to get it sent in for repair but he never got around to mailing it in. When I give the unit back to him, he plans on calling Garmin again and getting his RMA number so he can get it fixed.

REI...REI...REI

I just found out my coworker bought his unit at REI. He didn't know anything about their return/exchange policy. He is going to look into it though since he would rather go in and get it replaced over mailing it to Garmin.

I just sent my 60CS back to Garmin again because since they upgraded the firmware during the it's very recent visit to Garmin, the darn thing shuts off everytime I try to auto-route.... :D

Yes I know......:P

The good news is that I still have my backup Legend to use! :D

I was just up there last weekend at JTNP. I made the mistake of trying to find a campsite on a 3 day weekend. No luck- all the sites were taken. We ended up camping about ten miles away at Joshua Tree Lake campground. The owner of the campsite had a large group of unsuccessful JTNP campers.

I'm not aware of the kind of rig you're driving but I highly suggest the Brooklyn Mine trail in the Old Dale Mine District area in the eastern part of the park. I have the tracks if you'd like. We did about half of it as a night run. It's a nice mountainous ledge trail with a few rocks and washed out sections that make for a moderate challenge. I wish there were more caches in the area- it is out of the park in that area. There was a cache called "Humbug" but it was too dark and I didn't want to stop the group.

Interesting, you know when geocaching is cool when:

We've got all of the fun you're looking for at Tenaya Lodge - even if it takes you a GPS to find it! It's called 'geocaching' and it takes on a whole new approach to 'hide-and-seek'. With our Winter Geocaching Package, you can search for hidden treasure in the national forest surrounding Tenaya Lodge. The package includes the use of a GPS, snowshoes for two, pack lunches and a treasure that's waiting to be discovered.

Book Tenaya's Winter Geocaching Package, available January 1 to March 30, 2006. The package includes the use of a GPS, snowshoes for two, pack lunches and cache treasures. The package is offered midweek at $209/night, and weekends at $249/night, double occupancy.

See you at latitude: 37 degrees, 28 minutes, longitude: 119 degrees, 38 minutes!

The interesting thing the lodge is right next door to Yosemite National Park!

BTW. I highly recommend this lodge, it's amazing!

Thanks for the offer of your tracks. I have done the Brooklyn Mine.....crawled into the Mine...still old ore cart lines on the ground. I have a reservation so that I wont be stuck without accommadations. I have a jeep and it does pretty well. I am going to try and see if I can get anywhere close to the Carlyle mine.

It is a grand area that is for sure.

Don't let the Central Valley Cachers know, but we are about to pass up their thread count.  :anitongue:  They used to be way ahead of us.

But do they have 4 different threads! ;) If not, they are already eating dust! ;)

Actually we have 5 including the Banter site!
