avroair
What do people think of having an event in Harriman State Park NY? Just curious, seems like a good spot: varied terrain - mountains, lakes, woods, swamps, mines lots and lots of caches picnic tables and grilling areas Just curious Quote Link to comment
+JMBella
Please don't do it on July 17th. That's when our LI event is going to be and I really want to go to the Harriman event. Quote Link to comment
+Squealy
See Joe's post above. Also, not early in the month (I'll be in VT) - perhaps the 3rd or 4th weekend of July if possible for everyone. Edit: Typo and forgotten info. Edited May 19, 2004 by Squealy Quote Link to comment
+Team DEMP
Sounds great to me!!! I haven't made my way to that area (though it is on the fringe of my neext areas to target) so it's perfect for me and nearby! Let me know what to bring. Quote Link to comment
+IV_Warrior
I think you just volunteered to organize it, Avroair.......... Quote Link to comment
+Quoddy
I've been lining up a few in the Bear Mountain area for when I get back from vacation. Almost any date will be good, since I can arrange to be off work with just a few days notice. Sounds as if the REAL Quoddy will be able to go on another jaunt with Bella! Quote Link to comment

+ergo46
Sounds good to me pick some dates Quote Link to comment
+Team Bam Bam
We would definitely be interested. Our summer schedule already looks like swiss cheese but we would make a serious effort to make ourselves available - anything for Avroair, you know. Quote Link to comment
+Mopar
If we are free that weekend, we'll be there. You also might want to check with Harrald about any permits required by the park, since he's held 2 events there already. Quote Link to comment
+splicingdan
I've participated in a number of various races throughout Harriman SP and have found it to be surprisingly rugged for being so close to NYC. There are many opportunities for a wide range of recreational events. As for caching, search using zipcode 10911 (Bear Mountain). There's also a set of permanently marked orienteering courses in the Silvermine area that are maintained by HVO: http://hvo.us.orienteering.org/hvo/maps/hv...rmanent_courses Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
What kind of event? There are group campgrounds, picnic areas and shelters for backpacking. What do you have in mind? Quote Link to comment
avroair
Okay looking at people's schedules... and my own. I would think 24th-25th July would be tentative dates... I was thinking of a picnic with lots of hiking, lots of walking and food. The area has a very diverse activity schedule and lots of landscapes.... like I said before.... and of course lots of caches bunched together on different mountain tops! My favourite: .25 miles away... but 1500 feet up! Anyways, chip in what you think: Hiking, Picnic, Camping... I will check with the Park Rangers office tomrrow, I called them today at 4:33 and they were closed. (they close at 4:30). July 24th or 25th or both... Quote Link to comment
+fosterbass
I'm leading a charity bike ride past Harriman park on the 25th, but I would join you on the 24th. Quote Link to comment
+JMBella
25th Works for me. The 24th I am running a festival for my chamber of commerce. Quote Link to comment
+The Frantic Cachers
if any earlier in the month I am in...otherwise I can't make it....oh welll maybe next time Quote Link to comment
avroair
Okay, I have two weekends free to play: July 10-11 (one day would be 10, if overnight 10-11) July 24-25 (one day would be 24, if overnight 24-25) There are currently over 30 caches in the park Quote Link to comment
+Squealy
24th-25th would be perfect for me - hope it is cool with most of the others - otherwise I am smellin a road trip. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
Nothing on my calendar now for the 24th and 25th, so unless I get an unexpected wedding invitation, I'm there. Quote Link to comment
avroair
Okay looks like July 24th is the best bet. I will look into four potential spots: Lake Welch Lake Sebago Lake Tiorati There is also a nice picnic area at Lake Kanawauke, but no playground, cabins or camping. Here is my idea so far: Lake Welch Beach - Harriman State Park * Picnic by one of the lakes * activities available to people: swimming, fishing, boating, picnicking, hiking and camping * this won't be official overnight event but people are welcome to camp, there are campgrounds, cabins or shelters * we must bring our own grills * we will need a permit if more than 25 people show up or if we arrive in a bus! * Appalachian Trail - camping within sight of any shelter is also permitted! (this could be fun!) * boating permits: $15 (rentals available on lake welch) * parking fees my be applicable at any of the areas we choose * fishing requires a NY state license (under 13 not required) * Pets: All picnic and camping areas, pets NOT permitted (sorry Quoddy and Bella) * Horses allowed on horse trails only, mountain bikes on bike trails only I am going to scout out three locations this following weekend. +JMBella
Okay looks like July 24th is the best bet. Not for me it's not, but that's ok. Maybe next time. Unless you make it a two day event then I'll bethere on Sunday. Quote Link to comment
+The Frantic Cachers
Okay looks like July 24th is the best bet. Not for me it's not, but that's ok. Maybe next time. Unless you make it a two day event then I'll bethere on Sunday. Or a week or two earlier? Quote Link to comment
+JandM
i would like to try to make it to this one. we'll see if joe has to work. ~melissa Quote Link to comment
+Rattlehead
Unless something changes between now and then, I'll be on call the weekend of the 24th. Quote Link to comment
+SERG312
24-25 works for me. I'll probally be spending the night in one of the shelters or tenting out near by. Anyone else planning on spending the night? The week earlier, 17 or 18 don't look good for me, I'll be camping out at Round Valley. Quote Link to comment
+BMSquared
I think BMSquared would be in for something like that. Hey, if Team Bam Bam can do it, so can we. Unfortunately, we will need to cage our hounds for this one I guess. Quote Link to comment
+Team Shibby
I'll have to check my calendar, but if I/We are free you can count us in. This past weekend we bagged 9 caches in the park, so we are definitely conditioned to the terrain we are up against! We also waypointed a cool abandoned house to go back and explore! As for not bringing the pooches...That really stinks that they are not welcome to hike in Harriman. On the other hand, the place is loaded with ticks, so this may be a good thing. Kar of TS!! avroair
PET POLICY: Dogs are allowed on a leash (shorter than 6 ft) on the trails. They are not allowed in campgrounds, picnic areas, beaches and just about everywhere else we could possibly hang out As for cachers, they are also only allowed on the trails with a leash! If we can confirm 25 people the ranger told me we can reserve an area... or was it he told me we had to tell him... hmmm, I had better check on that! Oh yes, and I am supposed to ask if anyone is bringing along a bus? Just curious since we need a permit for it. Nice to know upfront. Quote Link to comment
+Mopar
Well, since it looks like jmbella isn't going, I don't think you need to worry that the bus are coming. Quote Link to comment
+Team Bam Bam
Our son has a lille toy school bus with the alphabet on it that he likes to take with him everywhere. Will you need to notify the ranger? He really wants to bring it so we'll need to obtain the appropriate permits. Quote Link to comment
+Mopar
Oh, good thing I already passed off this Travel Bug, huh? Quote Link to comment
+Team Bam Bam
That looks like his but does the TB version sing "The wheels on the bus"? Quote Link to comment
+fosterbass
Oh yes, and I am supposed to ask if anyone is bringing along a bus? Just curious since we need a permit for it. I'll leave the cachemobile at home. Quote Link to comment
+bldebabe
I'd be interested in going over the weekend of the July 24-25th, especially since I only have a few found caches in that area. Quote Link to comment
+JMBella
Well, since it looks like jmbella isn't going, I don't think you need to worry that the bus are coming. I saw that coming! Quote Link to comment
avroair
You also need a boat permit, so I asked if I could bring the QE II, the ranger said "Sure, if you can launch it from the boat ramp!" Not sure he knew his boats... Quote Link to comment
Batonka
I'm free for both weekends. I would also be interested in overnighting as well. Later, Batonka Quote Link to comment
+Straatmaker 5
We're interested, just let us know the dates and we'll check the calendar! Is the 24th firm? Will check with #1 when he gets home from work. Quote Link to comment
avroair
Okay update: Harriman State Park - Lake Kanawauke July 24th * Parking area with picnic tables and grills * Beach with swimming and boating available ($15 boat fee, $10 key fee) * Need to be there early to grab a spot, no reservations (geocachers rise early, right!?!) * 3 AP shelters within 1 mile for those who would like to camp overnight I will sacrafice my sleep to get up and 'grab' a spot! Once grabbed the day is free for morning hikes and caches... back for lunch at noon and more hikes and caches in the afternoon... Entrance to the park is $6 and i have been told if you want to bring a bus you have to pay extra fee. Quote Link to comment
+briansnat
Need to be there early to grab a spot, no reservations (geocachers rise early, right!?!) Harriman is extremely popular, esp. in the summer, so I advise getting the VERY early. Quote Link to comment
Batonka
Is it possible to go up the night before, camp out and then grab the spot early in the morning? I think I might be volunteering to do this so that's fine. Later, Batonka Quote Link to comment
+Rattlehead
Okay update: Harriman State Park - Lake Kanawauke July 24th * Beach with swimming and boating available ($15 boat fee, $10 key fee) FYI - There is no key required for Kanawauke. The key is only required for Lakes Welch, Tiorati, and Stahahe. Also, you must have a wearable Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for each person on board the vessel and children under 12 must wear a PFD at all times (NY State law). They check your PFDs when you get the boating permit. There is no swimming at Kanawauke. There are beaches at Lakes Welch, Tiorati, and Sebago. Quote Link to comment
+Straatmaker 5
Unfortunately, we won't be able to make it. #1 reminded me last night that we have a family reunion in Western PA that weekend. The worst part about it, it's MY family! And I totally forgot. That's what happens when you have three kids, three and under! Quote Link to comment
avroair
There is no swimming at Kanawauke. According to the Kanawauke Ranger: * Kanawauke swimming begins June 21st through Labor Day * no key required * You DO need a personal lift jacket Not sure is any of this is applicable unless there is a geocache in the water Now who volunteers to put one there? BTW: Yes, Bakonta, you just volunteered to grab a table. I was planning to be there at 7:30 a.m. but if you can snag one before... Quote Link to comment

+Packanack
There is the Cedar Ponds Group Camp Site, not to far from Tiorati Swimming beach and close to AT and other pleasant trails. Cedar Ponds Group Camp site has A<B and C camp sites. Camping is right on the shore and is among the prettiest local public camp sites anywhere. Canoeing and Kayaking on Lake Tiorati, boat must be approved, which means PFD's of proper type and a painter. Quote Link to comment
