+delanos
I'm amazed at some of the comments in this topic. Read the rules and intentions of this game, and follow along... If a "muggle" places something of distaste in a cache, there is no control over that. HOWEVER, when a cacher feels it's their "right" to place adult matter into a cache, I simply would say FIND ANOTHER HOBBY. If you enjoy trading condoms with other people, joy a "sauna club". If you think finding those things is fun, get a partner and stay at home. Better yet, indicate on your listing that there is distasteful materials in your cache. To the cacher that said something similar to, "If you don't want your kids to see it, leave them at home", GROW UP. You are only showing your own immaturity to the situation and sport ("I want to do this, and I don't care who doesn't like it"). Look around you. The world doesn't revolve around YOU. You are one tiny part of it. Do something that betters the entire world around you, not just YOU. Wait, give me a minute. There. I just played 30 seconds of violin for you. Brought tears to my eyes. The main reason I enjoy this caching so much is that it gives my family a lot of time to spend together, outdoors, hiking, talking and hunting. We enjoy the coins, travel bugs, etc. Maybe you need a wife and children of your own to realize the impact little things can have on you and your FAMILY. I love this sport. And I hope it remains something that I will enjoy for a very long time. Oh, and the weirdest thing I've found near a cache so far is a big pile of deer poop. Make for a quick log-in and escape. Now THAT's funny!!! DonB! I agree but like anything you're bound to run into jerks. Sad fact of life. That is why I clean out stuff that doesn't belong. I, father and rather mature (but not too much), am aware that the world does not revolve around me, nor does it revolve around DonB and his kids. My point was (quote): "If you want your children to be safe from these 'harmful' parafenalea in cache containers, don't take them geocaching. The point of the game is finding boxes wherein strangers trade stuff. These boxes are without supervision, out in the open. Doesn't sound like a child-safe game to me..." You don't have control over the contents of the cache. A condom might be in it, there might be worse things in it, and your kids will see those things when you let them open a cache. If you can't handle that as a parent, you'd better not let your kids open geocaches. I've seen worse things going to and from caches, rather than in them. There is a world of disgusting, strange and/or dangerous stuff out there. My kid will see those things and I, responible parent, will educate her on those things. That you can control as a parent. That is your job as a parent, not ranting online about people that leave weird stuff for your kid to see. Please, take your kid out caching, but don't expect the world to be family-friendly because you have kids. The non-family-friendly part of the world really doesn't care. You are just a tiny part of it. So am I, and I am making it better by educating my kid instead of trying to change things beyond my control. Realising that is what makes me a mature, responible adult. Quote Link to comment

I share your outlook (including not putting them in caches) and wish it was more widely held. That debate apart, there is also the more practical question of whether the condom is still fit for purpose. It could have had a pin put through it or been accidentally damaged in some other way. Even if it's intact, condoms do deteriorate in extremes of heat and cold. This alone makes condoms unsuitable as 'swag', even before the potential to cause offence or embarrassment. Once I found a lot of used caps on a string, accompanied by two vouchers for free entry to a regional swimming center - if having enough caps of a certain beer. At least there was a thought behind that. Too bad, the vouchers were already expired... The boy is interested in finding deer and rabbit remains as well, we already had our share here. Most disgusting: a smelly green and slimy liquid, obviously rain water with some dissolved contents of the cache. Weirdest thing: I found myself in front of two police officers after visiting a cache again for the bonus code, accusing me of illegal fishing. Was able to talk me out of that. The cache was archived soon. Quote Link to comment

It looked to be a big dog too, and there was a collar sitting where the neck should have been so it must have belonged to someone previously. As a side note, i'm pretty sure the cache itself was referring to the lot the cache was on which has the 'remains' of a house on it, basically just some scraps of bricks and cinder blocks as well as a portion of the slab. I don't think it was the cache owner's intention for a random dog to die right next to the area you have to park to get there. That's two creepy coincidental animal skeletons in as many days. +Dogmeat*
This isn't something I found in a cache, but it's a weird experience. I went caching with a buddy today and it brought us to a road. while the road went on, there was a stop sign that said "road closed" and a guard rail that makes the road only allow one car through at a time. At that guard rail, three cars were parked, one man in each car. We decided to walk around the guard rail and go find the cache. We spent about 15 minutes total there, because the cache was muggled but pieces were still there so we were putting it back together. While this went on, all three cars went further up the road, and a fourth car showed up. It parked and watched us for five minutes, and then went further up the road. Another car parked where that one was and watched. Then went further up the road. A fifth car parked at the guard rail, and an older man got out and went into the woods the opposite side of the road. There was a lot of traffic for a no exit road with nothing on it at the end, but a lot of people going up that way. It seemed like they were guarding something and I thought maybe we were close to a grow op. We decided to get out of there and noticed the man in the woods was just at the tree line watching us. As we got into the car, he came out an stood next to his car and watched us leave. As we left, another car followed us off the road and branched off away from us eventually. We saw about 10-12 cars total, all with one man in them. We ran into another cacher later on who had a similar experience and said there were mattresses and pads for kneeling on throughout the woods. Apparently it's a meeting spot for anonymous activities between gentlemen. Quote Link to comment
+KayakGZ
An empty condom wrapper. While finding one of those nano-under-a-rock caches, I also found a plastic bag within 6" of GZ. What's the point of cleaning up after your dog if you're going to preserve the poop in a plastic bag? A sheet of paper with the same design stamped repeatedly on it. Hmm. Didn't touch that. One cache was oriented towards transvestites. Quote Link to comment

Not that I go about putting them in caches, but we do sometimes leave them in plain view in our house and our kids haven't been traumatized for life. The point is this. We could debate forever what "should" be ok to put in caches. However, it is inconsiderate to put something in a cache that will annoy a significant group of people, even if you disagree with the views of those people. Intentionally annoying other cachers by putting controversial swag in caches makes it seem like either the cacher doesn't care about how others feel, or has an "agenda" (such as trying to make others more comfortable and "enlightened" like he is, in his opinion). A quick comment on the person who found it totally baffling that people left golf and tennis balls as swag. I've done so a couple of times with my own caches. Why? Kids go caching with their parents, & some kids (maybe up to about age 10) love finding a ball (in good condition). I know I did as a kid. Quote Link to comment
+wmpastor
Accidental placement of the cache, or someone's idea of "taking you to an interesting place"?? Quote Link to comment
+GopherGreg
One of the weirdest things I've found was a full (unopened) bottle of BBQ sauce, a week past it's expiration date. (The cache was a very large peanut butter jar, so it was a perfect fit!) I have found lots of condoms in cache, and I know that geocaching is "family friendly" but honestly, at least it's more useful than the twigs and bits of gravel n00bs leave in the cache when they don't have anything better to trade with. Plus. Like the Incredibles said; If it's wrapped and sealed and whatnot, then I don't know how a five year old is going to know what it is... It should be easy enough for the parents to tell the kid "let's not trade for that" without making a massive deal about it! Don't know if this counts as "Found in a cache" but it's still pretty odd. One cache was publsihed in my area. At the GZ no one could find a cache, but there was a tree with a crotch about a foot deep filled with urine. It made people's dogs throw up. It was found once (Way off the coords) before the reviewer 'unpublished' it. Quote Link to comment
