They updated the website again
Psychoticjesters replied to jellis's topic in General geocaching topics
I am a user who puts unicode symbols in my cache titles. While some of them are ok, others are completely blank. It's weird, some of the unicode symbols make the entire title dissapear. This seems most present when viewing it in internet explorer. Feel free to look at my list of placed caches through explorer if you're able to notice it. I'm just hoping they update things to fix that problem, while they're making all these changes anyway. -
Tell us about your first hide!
Psychoticjesters replied to Pezdude's topic in General geocaching topics
I think it took me about 200+ finds before I felt comfortable attempting my first hide. It was a puzzle, which I know doesn't appeal to everyone but a lot of local cachers in my area like puzzles. I of course had found a good amount of puzzles and other cache types first so had a decent understanding of them. So I went out and hid my first cache: ⚔ Geo Fantasy I (Unicode symbol was added later) It's not my best work, and a standard hide, but it has a few favorite points and I made sure to get the final coords as perfect as possible. I hid it in a place I've always enjoyed the view from, and the subject, though foreign to the majority of geocachers I'm sure, was one I was a huge fan of before learning about geocaching. (Real-life treasure hunting over virtual treasure hunting. ) More than two years and still going strong! I've never had to replace the container or even change the log sheets yet. -
One-lane Vehicular Bridges
Psychoticjesters replied to MountainWoods's topic in Recruiting and Category Proposals
Yes, this one in San Rafael, Ca! I actually stopped to look for the cache on it but with the lack of parking in the area I just double parked. after a 10 second search I saw a car on each side waiting to cross. Had to get out of there quick lol. I've been meaning to go back for the cache someday, maybe when there's legal parking available. -
What is the worst cache you've seached for?
Psychoticjesters replied to TheGrey's topic in General geocaching topics
There were a group of younger cachers brand new to the game who put out a series of Multi's with a final to it. A lot of the coords were off on many of the stages and a few of the containers were obviously not taken into consideration for anything long-term. A pill bottle tossed under a bush among other trash all over the place. One stage was the bottom half of a Carmex container, no lid, and not even a baggie for the logsheet. It was just placed in the side of a bush, no attachment mechanism or anything. It of course disappeared and one of the multi's in the series even got archived, effectively making the final impossible to solve. -
Strange or paramormal experiences on the trail

It sounds a lot like a barn owl. Any chance you saw a barn owl poking it's head out of the hole in the tree? -
Amusing Wildlife Encounters

Had an encounter with this guarding a challenge cache the other day... You actually don't see true black widows (just false widows) in my area so it was a newer experience for me. -
I'm not sure what's so rude about being able to name your cache whatever you want. It is YOUR cache so have every right to name it how you wish. It seems more rude to be creating topics trying to call them out IMO [] Isn't this a game that's meant to be fun? If no one is actually doing anything wrong then where's all this uncalled for hate coming from?

Amusing Wildlife Encounters
Psychoticjesters replied to cachman9's topic in General geocaching topics
I've run into a large group of raccoons in this cache in golden gate park that seems to be getting larger and larger as time passes. Found a California giant millipede under another cache Find a lot of these Spotted orbweaver spiders on a regular basis (non-venomous, just creepy looking ) Some juvenile Canadian geese started following me around at this cache. I think they though I was going to give them food or something. My log for this cache talks about a rarely seen snake I stepped on But it seemed to be ok and was even seen again the next day (or one just like it) but it didn't seem hurt at all or anything. -
What does your geocaching map look like?
Psychoticjesters replied to scottmcblane's topic in General geocaching topics
I'm still yet to expand to much of the East bay. There is a lot of puzzles all over the entire area evenly, the ones to the SE are just much harder than the others lol. As for the top of that "V" in the bottom right corner...all 5-star difficulties! -
I go on 5-10 mile hikes on trails in the middle of nowhere all the time. Used to pack a sandwich and chips and drinks but would rarely finish them. I've now grown used to packing a power bar, a 6" subway sandwich, and the rest of my pack space is conserved for fluids. Even if I'm gone for 8+ hours it seems to be more than enough and I don't even get the slightest bit hungry until I get back home again.

Why do you geoacache? What's the appeal?
Psychoticjesters replied to crackheadfreeze's topic in General geocaching topics
It saved me from all the hours I wasted playing video games all day long lol. I'd actually feel guilty about that former hobby. Like man, I just wasted the whole day in my room beating (insert popular game of the month here) and never even stepped outside today . But now that I'm into geocaching I'm actually out there exercising, finding new cool places and learning stuff (I favor the 7m< hiking trail caches and solving puzzles to heavy urban caching). I've since begun sighting various types of wildlife I never even knew lived around my area growing up! Combine that with photography, another little hobby of mine, and I've gotten more great picture opportunities in a month of caching than in a years worth of just hanging out around the house, mall ect. Then I get to go and upload the pics I took that day for the caching community to see. Nothing spoilery to the cache itself, but more like close ups of birds, snakes, sunsets ect. Anything interesting I find along the way. I might not have gotten into it as much as I am now if it wasn't for being able to share my pictures and all the other online features that come with logging them. -
I've been keeping a pretty good streak of 379 days so far, so I'm not really too worried about running out of finds over a one month period unless that's one really unlucky month for me!

I used to only log DNF's if I had something important to say about them or thought the cache should be checked on. But now I log most of them, though I usually don't log more than one DNF per cache. A good distance away from me there's actually this challenge cache requiring you to have logged at least 100 DNF's to qualify! DNF - California Challenge of a Century

I had a strange experience where I found a micro bison tube and rolled up inside the logsheet was a still-living fly! That is it was alive until I squished it by accident with my hand while unrolling the logsheet...

I got FTF on this one: Yahualica. It had been published for over 2 years and was 1980 miles away from where I live! No one seems to do much Geocaching in that part of Mexico it seems. I went ahead and published 2 of my own in the town I was staying in, (GC4C31N & GC4C32F) let's see how long it will take or even if anyone gets FTF on either of them lol.

What kind of bag do you use to go geocaching?
Psychoticjesters replied to Spunkie92's topic in General geocaching topics
I bought a cheap $30 Camelbak from Big 5. But it's nice, has plenty of pockets! a small one for my pens/trackables, one for my repair items (baggies, logsheets, caches to place/replace) and one for swag to trade or just give out. The windbreaker type material isn't the most durrable so if I used it to break my fall I'd probably rip open, but as of now it's still in great condition after nearley a year of outdoor hike-caching use. -
There are a few unique challenges as well as insanely difficult ones in my area. I'm not a fan of date restrictions personally so I don't plan on using them in my challenges. I only have 1 for now (GC3YXWX) but have plans to release others down the trail it's on. Even had an idea for anti-challenges on another trail parallel to it but they might not work out so well (go XX days WITHOUT finding a cache, only find traditional caches for XX days ect.) but those could be good for beginners.
-
The 3-4 closest ones to my house were overly difficult ones now that I look back at them. No wonder I DNF'd them when I first started. My first real find was one that had to practically spell out the location in the hint! lol

I just hid one of my own letterbox hybrids for the first time: GC43H7E Forgot to take a picture of the stamp I carved but I carved my own double sided stamp to give people options and published the listing on both Geocaching.com and Letterboxing.org. How's that look to you guys? Everything seem ok rules wise?

I just got a Garmin Etrex 30 for Christmas, which I've heard was one of the best ones to get for geocaching (For a $300 price tag it better be! ) But the map is pretty basic, it doesn't show much for terrain or hiking trails, not even any of the side streets in the city! Is there a way to upgrade the details in the maps for free? Somewhere I can download them I guess? I was hoping to get ahold of googlemaps or some type of terrain quality. Even my phone has google maps for the C:geo app!
