I just disabled our cache "Fast Track" that was located on the shoulder of Wild Cat Canyon Road on the Barona Reservation. It has been there for quite some time with no problems but today Princess Toadstool and Miragee stopped by there and were harassed by the Tribal Police. They were told they were able to pass through only and could not stop on their land....I guess you can olny trespass if you are droping money at the casino  It would be my experience now not to place any more caches out there.

Yup, that's the deal with the reservations. You should hear some of the stories about tribal behavior all the way out into east county. The ranchers spend a lot of time in court trying to protect themselves.

If you want your ears blasted just talk to Carpenter from Hell and all of his neighbors that border the Barona Reservation.

Wow... well, I guess I got an answer before even asking the question! Just today, I was printing out some info to prepare for asking for access to the Barona for geocachers. I haven't even contacted them yet, but if this is their policy, "Drive to the businesses on the reservation, but don't stop anywhere else," then I'd certainly be wasting my time even asking. On to Plan B.

Sorry about your cache, blonds! (I was looking forward to finding it next time I drove through there.)

We had an "interesting" experience on the road through Barona today. Princess Toadstool and I stopped to find FastTrack. We pulled off the road near the sign for the racetrack and were there for a few minutes because we were having trouble getting the cache container open. We did not notice we were being observed, but suddenly a Tribal Policeman appeared next to the car and asked what we were doing.

We said we had just stopped to take a little break. He told us we were allowed to travel trough on the road but were not allowed to stop. Fortunately, we had the cache container in the car with us. We didn't volunteer any information about it, or what we were really doing stopped there. He did not seem like he would be interested, or sympathetic to the activity.

FastTrack is going to be archived . . .

ok, you got me beat. I was thrown out of a little business park tonight when trying to go for Girlie Birthday Cache. I was on my way into the actual park when the security guard saw me. Let me know that I should not be in there at night for my own safety.

I guess it was a good thing I went for Fast Trak a couple days ago. I finally got it off my to do list and it is now gone.

I'm glad you made it back from Vegas safely . . .

How many caches did you find? How much money did you lose?

Well, Rick lost his cell phone at one of the caches (we think) and didn't notice it for about an hour. I insisted we go back and look, but we couldn't find it. Some 'cachers we are.

He has insurance, though, so the only thing we really lost was a couple of hours.

We ended up with 35 smilies, and the only machine I put money into was the one that spits out a smashed coin.

I also met an Endoran and had a Klingon threaten to throw me out an airlock.

Well . . . that is harsh, but it is true. I know the one 35mm canister he is talking about . . . at least I think I do.

Well, that's the beauty of this game. We have 3000 or so caches in greater San Diego and based on the logs he found, some people apparently like those caches he doesn't. If he was a bit smarter, he would have looked at our Best Caches in SD thread before looking around here.

Is it possible for "San Diego" to get its own Sub-Forum under West and Southwest for all of our topics? Moderator? Moderator? Please.......

Soooo true...When I lived in PB a PQ of 500 caches extended 12 miles (one side was the ocean). Went caching in Oklahoma City...a PQ of 500 included the entire state.

LOL...Thats funny...He DNF'ed on my Beer Root

Guess somthing more than a film canister was tooo much for him.

I love the geocaches here in SD I have learned more about this place in the last year than people know that have lived here forever. Those little log only caches get me out to see places I might have just passed by.

Pqmommy's legs have been on the main GC page for a couple of weeks now! B)

I've been waiting on the midsection shot.

Be sure and notice her "quick weight loss diet". She said she wanted to loose weight so I helped her. Then yikes, it shows up on the front page. ;)

It's CHRISTMAS doggone it!

And BTW, I'm trying to live up (or is it down?) to my pic!

Either Christmas or Festivus, but "holiday" just doesn't seem to do it for me!

Did he really base that opinion on just 6 caches? Talk about over-generalization.

I agree that he is misjudging the quality of SD caches based on a tiny sample of the population. SD has many awesome caches but one of the problems for out-of-towners is that it's hard to find the coolest caches in the area. The same is true when we go somewhere else. If more cachers made favorites lists (using bookmarks) and shared them it would really help! Plus the desire to be considered a favorite would give an incentive for cachers to put more effort into their hides!

Hi gang!

Just sit right back and I'll share a tale, a tale of a fateful trip!

Ok, enough of that.

I was reading our topic of safe caching earlier this week and had a chuckle. I mean really, how severe is our weather down here? Aren't you being a little dramatic?

Well, I almost became a statistic this evening, so I though I would share with you how NOT to go caching. I only did one thing right tonight, and that was tell John&Jess, and Passing Wind where I was going. I screwed the rest of it up royally.

I was going to link you to my log at the Poway Cave cache, but I wrote too much, and I had to edit on the fly since my post was too long. I am going to give you the original text here.

Wow, where to begin?

I needed a cache with a cave nearby to complete my final task in the Coin Quest game. I was going to meet John&Jess down in La Jolla today at low tide to do Black Beards Grotto with them, but something came up at the office, and I couldn't get away.

I was visiting another customer in Vista, and on the way back to the office in Escondido, I made the decision to make a run down here to find this cache.

That's where everything went wrong. I turned this into an example of how NOT to cache, and nearly became the poster child for how even a not so dangerous cache can lead to mishaps.

The only thing I did right was call two friends, and tell them where I was going. I screwed everything else up.

I decided to race the sun, and didn't stop back by the office to get the things I needed. I had a printout of the trails at the office, and my spare batteries. The batteries in the gps went dead, so I robbed the flashlight I had and kept driving. I figured I could still get to the cache with enough light to use the gps, and then switch the batteries back for the hike back out! I got to the trail head, and made another mistake when I decided not to take the time to change into my hiking boots. I did grab my walking stick and my cell phone, but that was the end of my smart thinking tonight.

For those that have done this cache, you might be asking yourself what could have possibly gone so wrong that I am making this big deal over it. Well, sit back, and let me share with you.

I took off at a brisk walk, and even jogged a bit so I could beat the sun. (Jogging by the way is used loosely here, since I am a bit of a big bubba!) I made good time, and the trail was wide and easily visible. I kept going along, and came to a spot in the trail where the main trail seemed to take a hard right. There was a smaller trail that kept going straight, and seemed to be where my arrow was pointing, so I went that way. (Now, if I actually had my palm or at least a printout with me, I would have realized that the description said this was a fairly level trail, and known that I was heading the wrong way.)

Well, I didn't have either one, so I kept pushing on. My needle started to drift toward the right, but I kept pushing on. Surely the trail will turn right somewhere up ahead. Before I knew it, I was walking in a dried up wash and gaining altitude. There wasn't a trail anymore. I stopped to look around, and came to the conclusion that I should have made 20 minutes earlier. I took a wrong turn.

Now that I took my eyes off the gps and looked around, I realized it would be difficult to back track, and would take way too long. There were a lot of loose rocks on the path I had taken, and in some spots the little bit of path I had followed came dangerously close to some sizable drops where the ground was not very stable. I then made the nearly fatal decision to bushwhack toward the cache location. The gps told me I was .19 miles away, and in the fading light, I figured I would have to work my way through the canyon on my right to the base of the hill on the other side. By now the only light was what was reflected off of the sky. I felt my way through all of the boulders, and made good time to the creek bed. I got to the base of the hill, and the gps still said 525 feet to go.

Ok, I guess it is at the top of the hill! The ground was soft enough that I could dig my toes in, and I spent the next 20 minutes bushwhacking to the top. About halfway up, I started to second guess myself and pulled out the cellphone. No service... I kept on, and about 50 feet from the top, my phone rang. It was John of John&Jess. He was on his way home, and offered to come lend a hand. I told him where I was, and he basically said, "Uh oh."

I finally made the top, and realized that was my worst mistake yet. I was still 300 feet away. I couldn't see a thing now, so I turned off the gps, and put the batteries back in the flashlight. The beam didn't go very far, and there was no trail down that I could find. I called John to see where he was, and told him I was in a jam. He was almost to the trailhead, so I started trying to work my way down. I slipped and took a header at one point, and laid there holding on for dear life. At this point, panic started to set in. I wasn't thinking straight. I had a very bad feeling that I was heading toward a cliff. A bit further down, I kicked a large rock loose and heard it tumble down the slope for about 30-40 feet, then it got real quiet. A couple of seconds later, there was a loud crash way below me. There were no more bushes below me, and I realized there was a very sizable drop that I wouldn't survive if I slipped and went over.

I didn't move. I called John, and he was on the trail. I waited right where I was until I could see his light coming. He followed the trail until he was even with me, and then bushwhacked to the bottom of the cliff. He found a way up and came up to me. He gave me a head lamp so I wouldn't have to carry my flashlight, and I followed him down. I have to say I didn't even enjoy logging the cache after that. I can honestly say John saved my life tonight.

If it wasn't for him, my next call would have been to 911 and you all would have seen me on the news.

I did sign the log though! []

[snip]

Sounds like a good prospect for a cache event! When you put together your CS4 Caching Kit, let us know what we need to make our own - seems like something we'd want to always keep handy in the car! (sounds like plenty of spare batteries would be a good start)

Ya know, I feel really stupid right about now!

The reason I posted it was because you just never know. Had I taken the correct path, I would have made it in and out with plenty of light. I just wanted to share my folly to show that even a simple hike can go bad, and you should always be prepared.

I don't think anyone is thinking that. Hey we all do stupid things! We are just glad that you weren't that rock!

That didn't cross my mind! I was thinking about how I'm always a little unprepared when I go out - it would be nice to have everything I need in the car! On the other hand, group caching helps because someone is bound to have whatever you've forgotten!

You were being looked after that is for sure!!!! Glad you are ok. Dont worry about stupid stuff.....we all have our times........I rank high in that.....darned PDA......will conquer it yet.

Thanks for sharing your harrowing tale. I'm very pleased that you didn't make the morning paper.

On the other hand it's not all that bad to have an adventure once in a while that's not boring and that turned out o.k.

Hmm, remember that Banter Thread photo of John in the Superman outfit?

I don't think it was about the right path or not having enough time. I believe the issue was not being prepared. Every hiker should have the Ten Essentials and then some more, when hiking. I have a 6"x4"x3" zipper pouch with everthing except water and food in it. I always have that in my pack.

If I get stuck outside after dark, the headlamp is great. Should it get even worse, I have a mylar blanket and trash bag to bivuac, matches if I really needed a fire and signaling tools to help call for help. A prepared hiker need to be mentally prepared and have the supplies to spend a night out.

Over the top? Not if you want to be safe.

The nerve of that guy, why I oughta ....

you oughta what?

We did over 34 urban caches I logged 5

and the beer root cache had so many homeless people and trash standing/laying around I thought it was a soup kitchen!

I'll be back in town Dec. 22 visiting friends/family at the USMC base & La Mesa

if any SD cachers would like to meet with me (to kick my a**!) or show me some fun well placed caches I'd be happy to do either!

I upped my standards ...Now up yours!
