+Touchstone Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Nice one Like you, I'll probably use the new feature in a more conventional sense of how Virtuals used to work. Primarily, I'll be posting photo challenges most likely, in places where traditional Geocaching is not allowed. Despite all the angst in the Forums, I'm kind of looking forward to see how this develops and what other features are added to this idea. Best of luck with your Challenge submission! Quote

There's been a lot of angst over the bad challenges, but there is a lot of freedom in the structure for the creative types to come up with something unique and entertaining. Even, something new. This is a real opportunity for those who think outside the box a bit to come up with something original. Quote

What makes these good is that you have to GO somewhere and DO something not sit at your computer and kiss a frog. The only good one I found near me 350 miles is "Guy West Bridge". Quote
+lifechooser Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 This is mine http://coord.info/CX71B, a classic virtual, take a photo of yourself on a boat as you pass through specific co-ordinates placed on a busy waterway, with a cunning but tricky landlubber method. I've just search nearby and most of the dross seems to have gone. This one sounds quite good. CX107 - "Holding hands with Madonna" - 'The Walking Madonna' is a 1981 bronze sculpture by Dame Elisabeth Frink situated to the north of Salisbury Cathedral. You will spot her if you approach the cathedral from the high street gate. Hold her hand and take a photo. From the FAQ: Is this it? Not even close. +hzoi Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 Here's our first: UR you up to the challenge? I wasn't geocaching when I saw the ziggurat in 2005, so I never got to log a find on the oldest cache in Iraq, even though I apparently was within 10 feet of it. (If only I'd looked in that pile of rocks by the telephone pole!) So, I was hoping to put a virtual there, and I did place a challenge there. Quote
+hzoi Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 p.s. I'm surprised that there's not a link to look for nearby location-based challenges on cache pages, or vice versa. Is this in the works? Quote

+deb3day Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I think your post is a good one. Problem is when I bring up the challenges that people are showing, there is no way to know WHERE they are! I guess the only way to know is to copy and paste the coords to googlemaps. That's kind of silly. Why can't we see where they are? It doesn't even list a state or anything! Quote
+TheLoneGrangers Posted August 19, 2011 Author Posted August 19, 2011 (edited) Deb3day, I'm sure they will fix it, they posted in the release notes that items still need to be fixed and updated. +ozman69 Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 My first challenge that I feel is a good one: http://coord.info/CX10A One question on challenges that I've not seen asked or answered anywhere: Since they say that challenges aren't really owned by their creator, does that mean it is ok to complete your own challenges? For example, I've see the monument I made my challenge for, but I've not done it since I created the challenge. I'd now like to go back and do it myself the way I created it just as kind of a record of what I've done. Would that be like finding your own cache (which I don't think you should do)? Quote

I like your Challenge. It seems you can put a log and photograph on your own Challenge without clicking on the link "Accept this Challenge", so you could do that to make your own record of being there. I presume that doing this would not count as a "Challenge completed"... but I haven't tried it on our own Challenge as yet. MrsB Quote

+deb3day Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 This is an old stone bridge near me that has is not straight, it's a curve. +Fianccetto Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 I decided I wanted to set 2 challenges for our cathedral. One for those who wish to take a whoto, on a quick visit and just have a look around which is here: Gloucester Cathedral Cloister Garden I went for the photo in the cloister as at least that is outside and so there will be some seasonal challenge, plus it is less likely to interfere with other visitors. The second one (if we are allowed to set two in the same place) will be to go up the tower which takes about an hour. There's also the option of the whispering gallery which is still high up but might be more interesting for some people. I'll set it tomorrow. Quote

In contrast to most challenges I have seen so far, I like that one. What's a bit unfortunate is that the description says nothing about how difficult it is to get there. That seems to be a general issue with almost all challenges and is aggravated by the fact that there are no D/T-ratings. Cezanne Quote

The new cache at that location has not yet been published. http://coord.info/CXB38 My opinion is that I would find it more interesting if you would remove the name of the place and the exact description of the picture location from the challenge. Make it so we need to actually use a GPSr to figure out where to go and some logic to figure out what to take a picture of. Quote

Yes, Fremont Bridge is notorious for frequently raising at the most inopportune times My wife and I lived in a houseboat a short distance from the bridge for about two years. I usually got stuck on the wrong side of the bridge once or twice a week coming home from work, while sailboats and other boats had to pass underneath. The best yet was one to attend 12 events at a particular place. Nice way to encourage and rewards people for attending the local regular event. Quote
