Couparangus Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Hi everyone. I just thought I'd throw this out there to see if there is any interest in hiking up (and down) Snowdon next summer. We did Ben Nevis this year and it was great fun. Snowdon isn't quite as tall so I'm in the process of devising ridiculous ways to make it more difficult. Cheers! Coupar-Angus Quote
Bilskirnir Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Ay up...I'm up for that!! Depending on exactly when it is proposed to be done - I've just booked next years hols you see.... Not done Snowdon yet so relish the chance to give it a go!! Bilskirnir Quote
Simply Paul Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 I took part in the mighty fine Ben Nevis climb event this June, and climbed Snowdon in September last year for a cache meet. I can recommend both mountains for a sense of achievement, but Snowdon is a pussycat next to Ben Nevis. Partly because it's only two-thirds the height, and partly because you start Nevis from 60ft above sea level, and you can get a third the way up Snowdon before getting out of your car (start early or you'll not get a space in the car park). As for how to make Snowdon more of an adventure, I believe there are cachers with Unicycles... Having ticked this one off in 2004, I'll wait for a Scafell Pike climb event before pulling my big boots on again. But I hope the event's a success and you have as much fun as we did getting up Nevis. SP Quote
Archer4 Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 I'm in the process of devising ridiculous ways to make it more difficult. Cheers! Coupar-Angus Have you considered extreme ironing? We did some at the Scafell virtual to add that extra frisson Quote
Teasel Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 As for how to make Snowdon more of an adventure, I believe there are cachers with Unicycles... Crib Goch on a unicycle - now there's a challenge! Quote
Moote Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 I'll come on this one Milton (aka Moote) Quote
The Blorenges Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Have you considered extreme ironing? We did some at the Scafell virtual to add that extra frisson Oh, yes, yes, yes!!! that's my sort of thing! I'd be good at that Is Snowdon good for more "mature" cachers? (Without unicycles) Mrs B Quote
Simply Paul Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 Well, there is a train to the top If you insist on walking, it's not too bad so long as the weather's ok. Anyone in fair shape can reach the top, if they can take their time and pace themselves. I found Mars bars very helpful. SP Quote
davy boy Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 The ridge track is an interesting climb but not for the faint hearted!!!!! I would be interested in climbing up this one again. Quote
Mr Nibbler Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 I'm old, wrinkly and an out of breath smoker - but the train sounds ok Quote
HazelS Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 The train is lovely - and far more "me" than getting hot and sweaty.... However, a warning is that if there's the slightest puff of wind, the train does not go all the way to the top, it gets about haf way, you get out for 10 minutes and stand on this precipice, and then go down again... However, if it goes all the way to the top - fabulous!! H Quote
The Blorenges Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 However, a warning is that if there's the slightest puff of wind, the train does not go all the way to the top, it gets about haf way, you get out for 10 minutes ,,,, I thought you were going to put ",,,you all get out and push it to the top" Quote
davy boy Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 I think i would rather enjoy the walk, not a cheap option!! Snowdon mountain railway. Quote
The Blorenges Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 I was thinking that the "half way up" option of Clogwyn would be a good option, but it seems it doesn't stop there during peak season - you have to go all the way to the top. Mrs B Quote
Brenin Tegeingl Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 If your thinking of taking the train opption you can get a group prrice if you get enough enterest like This Event . Word of warning you only get 30 minutes at the top by train, makes for the shortest event ever Dave Quote

Word of warning you only get 30 minutes at the top by train, makes for the shortest event ever Dave That's not long enough! If you gasp your way to the top you'd need more than 30 mins to recover. +Mr Hedgehog Posted October 28, 2005 Posted October 28, 2005 As for how to make Snowdon more of an adventure, I believe there are cachers with Unicycles... SP Indeed, but I've not tried caching by unicycle...yet!! Quote

Happy Humphrey Posted October 29, 2005 Posted October 29, 2005 ...back on the Snowdon topic, the Crib Goch route up Snowdon is certainly enough of a challenge for those who'll find the tourist route a bit tame! I've walked it a couple of times and it's not dangerous (in good conditions) but is one of the more spectacular easy scrambles south of Scotland. HH Quote
The Cache Hoppers Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 (edited) Definitely interested here (s'long as it doesn't clash with the Isle of Man event) but would prefer a "not so challenging" route. Perhaps there could be two routes and I don't mean the train being one of them! Edited October 31, 2005 by The Cache Hoppers Quote
The Blorenges Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 it's not dangerous (in good conditions) Are you sure ?!! It looks horrendous I don't think I'd be that adventurous...especially if I'm carrying a unicycle and an ironing board. Mrs B Quote
Bud Lightbeer Posted October 31, 2005 Posted October 31, 2005 Count Nettie and myself in! Done Snowdon a couple of times in the past, but see no reason why it shouldn't be bagged again Quote
Couparangus Posted November 1, 2005 Author Posted November 1, 2005 Holdy cow - just checked and seen I've created some interest. Will write more later when I get a chance - crazy busy of late! Cheers! Coupar-Angus Quote
Alibags Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Yeah, I would be interested too. It's 20 years since I last climbed Snowdon (Crib Goch in January in the snow). I vote for the amusing ascent followed by the train down again!! Quote
purple_pineapple Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Me and Mrs pp may be interested, depending on when. We're already booked for a few weekends next summer! I would love to do the crib goch ascent but I think Mrs pp may prefer a slightly less 'interesting' route, so two groups would seem a good idea! Quote
AriExplorer Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 I'm sure we'd be up for it taking a "moderate" route up Quote
Cave Troll and Eeyore Posted November 1, 2005 Posted November 1, 2005 Yeah, I would be interested too. It's 20 years since I last climbed Snowdon (Crib Goch in January in the snow). I vote for the amusing ascent followed by the train down again!! If ya walk up you aint guaranteed to get a place on the train for the descent. They will sell you a ticket to come down from the summit only if there are any spare seats and they are almost as rare as rocking horse do dos ! Quote
stu_and_sarah Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Ah, but it has been done! I've just restored them from the backup. btw. who's that fat git on the unicycle? Cheers, Stu (1.5 stone lighter and counting) Quote

Couparangus Posted November 25, 2005 Author Posted November 25, 2005 Just moving this one back to the top. I had a look at Snowdon and it almost looks too easy when compared to Ben Nevis & Scafell Pike. I'm thinking a Twin Peaks dual ascent may be in order for Summer 2006. They're both in the same area (sorta - especially by Canadian standards). I like the extreme ironing idea! I was thinking also about inflatable raft & pump with paddles. More to come... Cheers! +KiwiGary Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 This sounds good to me as well, keen to come along if I can. See ya...Gary Quote
G Force Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 Havnig done Ben Nevis with you I would recommend anyone to go for it. Myself I'll stick with SP and his comment Having ticked this one off in 2004, I'll wait for a Scafell Pike climb event before pulling my big boots on again. But I hope the event's a success and you have as much fun as we did getting up Nevis. SP Hope you have good weather as well. Quote
minstrelcat Posted November 25, 2005 Posted November 25, 2005 We'd be interested if it was a date that fits in with my studies. And if it's one of more moderate routes up. Lisa Quote
