Cruising_Adventuring Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 I have what i think is kinda a funny cache location. I would make a fake "grave" of stacked up rocks with a cross at the top, and i would hide the cache inside, but i have bones from various animals that i could disperse in the rocks every once in a while...think anyone would find it? Quote
+QDman Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 I'm not sure we want to encourage grave-robbing. Having said that, if you had some indication on your cache page of what was required, I'd do it. Of course, if you thought being caught by a muggle while looking under a park bench was bad... Quote
+Chuy! Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 I'm hesitant to say "go for it". The bones will attract animals, and the setup will attract muggles. Quote
+Renegade Knight Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Interesting idea. It's not against the guidelines, but be sure to have permission to build it on whoevers property you hide it on. The idea involves too much terraforming to do anything else. Quote
+Hemlock Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 After the problems that we as geocachers have been having in cemeteries is some parts of the country, I think this is a very bad idea. Please don't do it. Quote
+Zephyrpl Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 The word ghoulish comes to mind. Zephyr Quote
NatureFish Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Ditto! Really bad idea, please don't! Ths goes against every image of geocaching we are trying to show land managers! Quote
+CO Admin Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 From the Guidelines: For all cache types please be sensible when choosing your location for cache placement. Please be aware of what may be a perceived to a non geocacher as dangerous or questionable behavior. For example, suspicious looking characters wandering about near an elementary school. The land may be public property, but keep in mind what is on the other side of that property line This would apply to the OPs idea Quote
4wheelin_fool Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 What would happen is that the cache would attract attention from muggles. Also, geocachers would uncover the cache and not cover it back the same way. Why not wait until the Halloween stuff comes out in the stores and get a cheap motion/light activated skull that lights up and laughs. Hide it in a dark place such as a hollow tree or a small pipe that stays dry and put the cache directly in front of it. Quote
+briansnat Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 I'd say its not advisable. Someone finds it and the next time they're in a cemetery they think "Hmmmm, maybe that grave is fake and its in there". Next thing ya know geocaching is on the national news. Quote
+Bibba Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 (edited) I'd like to think this wouldn't get approved if you submitted the details. It would just be a problem waiting to happen. All it would take would be the suspicion that a "missing person" could potentially be found there and the local police would be digging the site up. Not the type of news headlines we'd want associated with geocaching. edited for spelling Edited August 14, 2005 by Bibba Quote
xrabohrok Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Human nature: people are attracted to wierd dead things. And doing it in a cemetary is bad. Quote

That wouldn't go over very well with folks here. We're the first state in the nation to face legislation restricting geocaching because somebody got offended with caches in and around cemetaries. In fact, place something like that here and you might find it physically removed by the locals without word or warning. If you're looking to do something like that keep it "halloween-ish" Here is a good place to get some ideas. Hope this helps. Quote
+Isonzo Karst Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 I'd say you could do it - but it would have to be on private property - your own, or a friends. Not any kind of public property. Quote
+Kai Team Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 It's still a bad idea, even if it's on private property: I'd say its not advisable. +deimos444 Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 That is pretty darn strange. You need to have your meds increased. Quote
+El Diablo Posted August 14, 2005 Posted August 14, 2005 Bad idea. I can just picture the headlines when a muggle comes acrossed it and calls Law Enforcement thinking they found a grave. El Diablo Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 (edited) I don't care if it's a roadside memorial, bad idea. But thank you for asking. Seriously! Edited August 15, 2005 by BlueDeuce Quote
+miles58 Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Somebody's got to ask this question: Doesn't this violate the rules as a buried cache? Quote
Mvillian Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 I would think it would violate more than one rule, moral and otherwise!! Quote
+Team Dromomania Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Perhaps for a temp event cache but there are too many things going against it for a regular placed cache. Quote
Cruising_Adventuring Posted August 15, 2005 Author Posted August 15, 2005 lol ok ok so it was a bad idea! but ill make something funny...but ill ask about that again too! lol Quote
+sbell111 Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Somebody's got to ask this question: Doesn't this violate the rules as a buried cache? No. The guidelines allow rocks to be stacked on top of the cache. Many are hid in this manner. Back on topic, with some minor alterations to the idea, this could be a feasible idea. First, skip the bones. Second, as CR suggested, make the marker cartoonishly halloweeny (that reminds me of a joke...). I think the grave of G.O. Cache might be kinda fun to visit this fall. Quote
+WhatsRNutts Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 (edited) a cache in my area was put in a cemetary next to a marker that was a 5 day old infant. he created a floral arrangement and underneath it is a tupperware container. you have to lift the floral out of the pot/planter thing in order the find the tuppereare. My mom and I searched for almost an hour for it and it was suppose to be a 1/1 it was one of theses things... Edited August 15, 2005 by wreckelite Quote
+TheAlabamaRambler Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 Not much point carrying this thread on - many Reviewers have weighed in with their strong dissapproval and requests to avoid this kind of thing. Not much use debating a cache that there is no way in Hades will get listed here! Quote
+sbell111 Posted August 15, 2005 Posted August 15, 2005 (edited) Has there been any debating? As far as I've read, people have simply been weighing in. Whether any variant would get listed totally depends on the implementation, packaging, and communication with the reviewer. Edited August 15, 2005 by sbell111 Quote

Personally I think it could work if on private property and tweaked as CR and sbell111 suggest. Edited August 16, 2005 by Corp Of Discovery Quote
2oldfarts (the rockhounders) Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 This cache is not in a cemetery but the finders have really enjoyed it. Ghastly fun! I wonder when was the last time you went to a cemetery and saw a grave covered by a pile of rocks? Who said they were going to put it in a cemetery? Don't worry about animals getting after the bones if they have been weathered and bleached by the sun. We know of several areas where a critter has died and the bones remained undisturbed for over 2 years; Another non-problem. Why would it have to be on private property? It wouldn't be a problem out here on BLM or state lands where caching is allowed. Just use some discretion when choosing where to set it up. I suggest you wait to see how the cache page is written and where it is placed before condemning the idea. Nothing like having an approver with an open mind to new ideas..... John Quote
+sbell111 Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 In my opinion, private property would be important for two reasons. The lesser of the two is that permission would be difficult to obtain. The more important is that on my own property, I can tell detractors to take a hike. I wqas thinking 'no bones' for more of a health reason. I don't have any real clue, but I feared some sort of nasty bacterial issues. Quote

Cruising_Adventuring Posted August 16, 2005 Author Posted August 16, 2005 i agree, and also i never said it was in a cemetary, thats messed up! but i might do something like that for halloween night!...and then close it down after that, but that might be kinda exciting? what do you think about a one night hunt? 9 and yes bones are bleached and perfectly clean) Quote
+sbell111 Posted August 16, 2005 Posted August 16, 2005 (edited) A one night hunt wouldn't be approved, but you could agree to disassemble the 'grave' after halloween and keep the cache hidden nearby. Edited August 16, 2005 by sbell111 Quote

+teamjack&birdie Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 I agree that it could be great in the right area, I think it's funny. Some people clearly don't, but I sure do read alot in these forums, 'if you don't like it, then don't hunt it'. A pile of rocks with a stick cross is pretty cartoonish, really someone is going to dipose of a body in this fashion? please Quote

geo_boy_2001 Posted August 17, 2005 Posted August 17, 2005 you sould rig something so when FTF finds it a fake body falls frome the trees but then you would have to go back after every hit and reset it Quote
