Jim i have a question since Duncan wanted to find some people listed on above post ... could it be that someone played with him outside the geocashing domain in exchange to travel bugs that he needed? After 5 pages of what could be described as almost crystal clear descriptions of geocaching, and links to faq's here in this forum, this is what these people have come up with as a definition. At first I thought they were just stupid, but now I see I was overestimating. This "Babes" characrter seems to be their ringleader. It's like a bunch of stupid pigs who run back into their burning barn because it's dark outside and they just want to go home. Hey, wasn't "Babes" a pig? Edited July 5, 2005 by cachew nut Quote
+tabulator32 Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Ok. I admit it. There is a conspiracy around Travel Bugs. But to set the record straight, this is the real story. I devised a creative promotion called the Jeep Travel Bug. In each bug beneath the metal compartment is an e-meter with a transmitter. When a person grabs the bug it begins to read and transmit your mind energies to experts around the world. I heard the density of the pigment in the yellow paint was actually causing transmitting issues problems with the 2004 jeep TB's. Is this why the 2005's are white? (We'd hate to have a jeep with a transmission problem, wouldn't we?!) Quote
+Happy Bubbles Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 It's not just these courttv folks who have mentioned this. Our local news (which is all over every single detail of the story since we're right by Couer d'Alene) just had a blurb talking about how Duncan was also involved in "a high-tech game of hide-and-seek" using satellites. Judging from his profile, this guy was barely even involved in geocaching. He only had ten finds in two years. I'd say that he's not a geocacher, just a guy who sometimes finds geocaches, just like a person who plays sports only five times a year isn't really called an athlete. So it's ridiculous for someone to refer to geocaching when describing the major parts of his life, or to think he's in any way representative of or connected to the rest of the people involved in this game. Quote
+entropysedge Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 anyone who managed to slog thru that thread has my admiration (my brain started to scream for help from reading the inane answers) It seem that the gist of it is that geocaching is something that THEY wouldn't do so anyone who would MUST be a weird physco head case. The fact that this guy Duncan had a connection proves it (in their minds); it doesn't matter that it is a minor connection, they are looking for a conspirasy(sic) and believe they have found one; it doesn't seem to me that they are ones to let the facts get in the way of what they believe to be true, if the facts don't agree with their opinions, they'll just ignore them. Quote
+vree Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 (edited) yes... they need the beanies. they are trying to connect the guy to geocaching because it's a "family activity" and kids cache. funny, i've found almost 300 caches and have only run into cachers on the trail once. it's a family activity because you do it with your family... what, they think kids are running around alone in the woods with gps units finding tupperware? and driving around the 5000 jeeps that have been hidden somewhere? btw, CTV people, the jeep TBs are WRANGLERS, not grand cherokees. some of the people over there seem reasonable, it's just a few idiots. *cough*babes*cough* Edited July 5, 2005 by vree13 Quote

I eliminated the last sentence and the signature to protect the writers identity. This e-mail made all my frustration worthwhile. I just registered with geocaching.com today as a result of the courttv.com debacle. I'm sorry the geocaching site got pulled into this, but I'm glad I found ya all because of it. I wanted to say, it was a brave and really nice thing you did going to the CTV site to try to explain geocaching, but as a long time lurker and occasional poster there I gotta tell ya....you just as well beat your head against a tree. It would be just as productive and much less painful. Those people will grab onto anything and just run with it then post stuff like "Gee, I hope law enforcement checked into that" as if they have some inside knowledge that LE might have missed. There ain't no eye roll big enough to tell you how I feel LOL Anyway, I'm so excited about geocaching. I actually went out and bought a GPS today and even went on my first geocaching excursion, although when I got there I wasn't dressed right and didn't feel like wading into armpit high weeds with shorts on LOL Live and learn. I think this has so much potential to get my daughter and myself away from the computer and out into nature and really have fun! Over there (Ctv) they DO spend too much time on the computer speculating things that are just plain wrong, or trying to bend the things they *uncover* into a convenient mold for their thinking. ju66l3r Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Waaaaaaaaait, a minute, just *what* is a "webscouter.", anyways??? I think CTVers are just trying to infiltrate our child porn networks for their own usage! Because you know that there are those scout leaders who molested those children, and if you anagram Jim Shilt, you get "Jilts Him" which is a reference to how he was jilted by his lover so now he scouts the web. I hope someone's told LE about this!! You see where I'm going with this??? Congrats, webscouter, on introducing someone enthusiastic to our hobby! +Team Red Oak Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 WOW! I decide to get out and cache over the weekend and not look at my home computer and I missed this whole thread. Way to go Webscouter. The thought of reading all the CTV posts just boggles my mind (or maybe it was Jeremy's electronic TB devices). I know this has been brought up before and I'm probably just beating a dead horse, but... My family belongs to another very large organization that has nothing to do with geocaching and last year one of the members who was in a position to mentor children was convicted of being a pedophile. It doesn't mean everyone is a predator. My boys are boy scouts and occasionally an adult involved with the scouts is a predator, there was a high school teacher in a neighboring high school who was arrested at the end of this past school year for having teen porn on his home computer. His house burned down and the firemen found suspicious things in the house and then police investigated. If it hadn't been for the fire the guy would still be a teacher! So no matter what you do the sickos are there, even in Wal-Mart! On the upside, I spent Saturday out with my family and found 2 virtuals at the national zoo and cathedral, and on Monday I logged a DNF in the woods while my husband and boys were fishing and we found another virtual in Baltimore while waiting for the fireworks to begin. Now, I'm pretty sure my employer would appreciate it if I got back to work! Quote

You're in Anne Arundel County, aren't you! That guy was my chemistry teacher in 1992! He had all the girls sit in the front rows and chatted with them all class. The grading scheme he used was an every other seat method ("you get an A, you get a B, you get an A..."). I hear he had boxes of the stuff (which is what tipped off the firemen as they were putting out the fire) and even tried to deny it was his (he lived there alone...in a purchased home...)! Oh no! +Sparrowhawk Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 (edited) Heh! If I were to join this discussion, the FIRST thing I'd do is go join that board and start connecting Geocaching with an overall conspiracy that links it with everything from kidnappings to UFOs to the Illuminati to Nostradamus. In other words, make a kind of "my tinfoil hat is bigger than yours!" sub-thread, without really saying it. And if any of the regulars start telling me I am full of it, I can accuse them of obvously being part of the overall conspiracy, trying to silence me, and to proclaim "The truth is out there!". Then watch the fireworks. Unfortunately, since I posted this here post, it reveals my evil plan up front, and thus it is foiled (pun?) in advance. So much for that idea. +Sparrowhawk Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Seriously though...
