The San Diego Thread

Recommended Posts

Well gang, here we are, 100 pages later. We have seen a lot of things since I started this thread back in December 2002. As cachers have come and gone, we have lost a few friends, but gained many.

When I first started this thread, Central Valley Cachers were on their third page. They are now on their 129th. They have more postings, but we have a lot more people reading our thread. With 98 K views, we are closing in on another milestone. (who wants to be the 100,000th viewer?) Our Reply to View ratio is 20 to 1. Theirs is 8 to 1. (who are all these lurkers?) I started off by advertising the thread on each of my cache pages and putting a small line at the end of my logs. It wasn’t long before I realized I didn’t need to do that anymore.

We’ve seen broken arms and bee stings. We’ve shared hints and stories. We have seen all sorts of interesting photos. We’ve shared information about Photoshop, Rockets, GPSrs, PDAs, Satellite photography, Route 66, Travel Bugs, FTFs, Cult movies, Rattlesnakes and other reptiles, and Geocoins. We’ve scheduled picnics, pizza parties, bar parties, CITO events, and campouts. We’ve given advice to out-of-town visitors, and to each other.

Avatars change, and so do Log in names, but a few things have remained the same. San Diego Cachers are a great bunch of people, and this is a great place to come and chat about geocaching in and around San Diego County.

I would like to thank each and every one of you for posting on this thread and keeping it alive. I look forward to the next 100 pages of interesting banter from so many interesting people.

NightHunter,

The NightHunter thread has played a major part in uniting the San Diego Geocaching community. Thanks ever-so much for the many friends I've found.

I'm one of the first to get chased off of the thread for being a Photoshop pest. That was special, one thing an old Texan enjoys is being noticed like that.

Well done, Sean! Nice to see you got to make the post as the Thread turned the corner on #100. This has been a welcome distraction to me and, I'm sure, countless others as we find ways to avoid the ho-hum of everyday life. So how do you know how many viewings there have been?

Assuming that you subscribe to this forum topic already. You can go to the top of this page and hit "My Controls". Then go to the left side of the new screen and hit "My Topics." All the topics you subscibe are listed on the right with the stats for each!

Thanks to you for the idea, I didn't even realize this milesone was coming up.

another way to see the number of views is on the West Southwest page. All the topics are listed and the views are listed next to the posts and who and when the last post was.

'Ere, have any of you lot ever tried Geodashing? I just had a look, and it looks like quite good fun, though you'd have to travel a LOT to find many - there are only 3 in SD county this month, and from what I can tell, on is on MCAS Miramar and another is inside Camp Pendleton! It says the "dashpoints" are randomly generated, but it seems a bit daft to do that, as so many would be on private property - though you only need to get within 100 metres to be able to "log" your "find".

The Shutterspot thing on GPSgames.org looks quite fun too. I do sometimes get tired of the scrabbling in the bushes to find actual caches, so maybe these would add some variety...

Ok, anyone in San Diego area I need your help. Everyone else come along and join the fun. I like podcasting also, which is individuals that have special interested doing their own "radio" type talk shows and posting them online so they get automatically updated to an mp3 player.

I found one yesterday by a geocaching husband and wife team. (she has even hinted that her best find in a geocache was a engagement ring). Anyway one one of their episodes they made a plea for more listeners. I came up with the idea of sending the audio out on cd as a travel bug and head it in their direction and get in into the hands of someone that would create a "challenging cache" for them to find it in. I am not in the area to know or meet anyone that would be interested in participating in this portion of the fun. I would like to see if anyone on this forum would be such an individual or would know someone.

The travel bug page is http://www.geocaching.com/track/details.aspx?id=169244

Everyone else come take a look also and listen into a lot of fun and spread the word.

I also have the topic in the travel bug forum:

all help and suggestions appreciated

thanks

Bummer, no one has even acknowledged this guy's question ...

We're hoping to do something fun!

He contacted us several days ago and I pointed him to our thread mentioning that we had some very creative, devious and talented cache creators our here in SD.

Any takers?

I'm still not quite sure what he means: we wait for the TB to get to San Diego, and when it does, someone picks it up and then puts it in a new puzzle cache so that you guys can record your attempt at FTF?

I looked at it for a few minutes, also, and was not quite clear on the concept....

Under My Controls, then Board Settings, you must have your Posts Per Page set at 25. I think most people have theirs set to Forum Default which is 50.

I figured it was something like that. If I had 50 posts to a page, the pages would never load with my 24K dialup connection . . .

P.S. Nice to see you back here again Night Hunter. :D

I'm just back in from a evening/night hike through Blue Sky and Lake Poway and I nearly soiled my armor I was so scared. No, it wasn't the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on, it was a rattle snake.

It was just past sunset and it didn't have a light out yet when he saw me first. He let out a short buzz then shut up. Dang, my heart nearly stopped!

Its the first time I've ever encountered a snake at night. It certainly puts up a red flag for me night hiking solo. There's such a slight chance of seeing them first.

Night hunter and others, have you run into snakes at night as well?

(did I work in enough Monty Python?)

Yes, I have ran into plenty of snakes. And, when I am hiking at night, I am often doing it without any light. That sudden buzzing is even scarier when your not sure which way to jump. Even Scarier than Rattlers, but not nearly as dangerous is when you scare up an enitre covey of birds out of a bush. It sounds like the entire bush explodes and you think you are being attacked. ;)

Idio: Thanks for the welcome back. It's nice to have some time to read and post to the thread. I'm just way to busy to have some 1600 posts.... Wow! that's crazy

Hey Sean, there are now only 32 posts left until this San Diego thread hits 5000!

I think you should have the honors!

Start the countdown! :(

Do I have to come up with something nice to say again, or can I say how I really feel about this lame hobby of ours? ;);)

I don't understand. What's going on with the tb? And what would the "takers" be doing?

My son almost stepped on a rattler that was laying on our neighborhood sidewalk at night a couple of years ago. He thought it was a stick and was going to kick it. I yelled for him to "STOP!!!" when I spotted it, and luckily he did!

I guess it was enjoying the warm sidewalk on a cool night. I guess it would pay to get some of those leg protectors if you gonna cache when they're hard to see.

The main idea was for Tucson Thompsen to be over 1000 miles away when I set up the cache.

Bwahaha!

You're all too nice to me. I don't think I've travelled over 1000 miles for an FTF. I hear stories that CCCooperAgency has though. The furthest I think I've gone specifically for an FTF is 110 miles. But it was a puzzle cache. (GCMWKH).

Thanks for the memorial! I'll have to hit it when I come back to town.

--TT--

PS: 2,393 miles to be exact.

From what I understand:

1) jncrow is going to send a travel bug form Idaho with instructions to get to San Diego.

2) He would like someone in San Diego to pick it up from a cache once it get's here.

3) He would like someone in San Diego to create a puzzle cache and place the TB in the NEW puzzle cache.

4) Sandy and I (iTrax / Sonny) are supposed to watch this all happen, then hunt down the cache when it posts. We are supposed to record our "adventure" finding this new puzzle cache and turn it into another podcast show.

More stuff:

5) Lots of people will be watching this TB's progress to see where it is and find out if a) it's in San Diego yet, and  when the NEW puzzle cache is released.

6) Sandy and I will be following the TB and commenting on it in our shows until it gets here in SD.

So what we would like is:

1) Some here in the SD area who is willing to pick up the TB when it arrives in a local cache and 2) create a puzzle cache (maybe similar to the "off to see the Wizard" cache that the Adams Family Circus put out a while ago?) to put it in. If you want to listen to a few of our "field story shows" go here to listen to some of our Stories From The Field shows.

Stories from the Field

Potentially as it travels across the US we could pick up many listeners who are waiting to hear what happens here in San Diego with this TB adventure. They would listen and look to seen what new puzzle cache it is dropped into here in SD to hear the completion of this endeavour.

Thanks a bunch cachers!!!

OK, well if you want a volunteer, I'll do it. If the TB actually makes it to San Diego, I'll go and pick it up and then make a new (puzzle?) cache to put it in. I just think it's a very long shot, since the whole premise relies on this bug moving in an orderly/timely fashion in the direction the owner intends!

Dan-oh, can I assume that this makes you Belinda - the Good Puzzler of the North?

Can you at least tell us which one of your past creations this one is most similar too?

Lets ask the triple FTF cachers, Cornerstone4, D-Jollymon and John&Jess what they thought.

I tend to think its '******' meets '********'. Never mind, I don't want to give any hints. And since the first three have found it sans hints, its doubtful I'll add any. icon_smile_evil.gif

Woohoo! Thanks!

I agree with your thought though that it's a long shot and that it relies on the bug moving in an orderly / timely fashion. Not very reliable. I've had TBs "lost in space" for months.

We'll see how this one goes.

The only one I needed hints for (so far) was "Snakes and Ladders" and that was on one waypoint where we overlooked something very important. Arghhh!!! So I wasn't looking for hints. I was just curious which of your caches this was one was most similar to. Maybe it's not similar to any?! Anyhow, I'll find out when I do it! :P

Hi San Diegans!

I'm trying to find a swimming hole or at least a wading creek near Palm Springs pref with a cache nearby, any suggestions? Also any must do caches water or not?

I'm not sure you can swim at the indian canyons any info?

I was just afraid this request for assistance was going to get pushed aside because of all the other exciting things happing out there right now.

I would hate to see that happen. I myself cannot help out, But I know there are many great caches in PS, and it's possible to do 150+ in a weekend.

Anybody care to add to that? Swimming holes?
