  1. I am well aware that Challenge Caches and Challenges are two separate entities. My intent was to draw attention to the fact that challenge caches are far more stringent (and better!) than this new "challenges" feature and that the new feature is basically the exact same thing as Waymarking, or perhaps worse. "Go somewhere, do something" is a joke. Seriously. Here's an example: Go somewhere: your bathroom Do something: flush the toilet Congratulations! Almost every geocacher in the world successfully completes this "challenge" every day.
  2. ATTENTION Half of you that post in this thread: Please stop asking! Your wish has already been granted (perhaps at the next website update). Agreed. So much for bringing back virtuals without bringing back their problems. What's this got to do with geocaching? Please move it to another site like Waymarking. Virtuals are great. They actually involve you going somewhere specific and learning something you would otherwise miss. Challenges are not "bringing back virtuals" but rather bringing back Locationless caches, which, let's face it, sucked. The new "Challenges" feature on geocaching brings back exactly the problem that was solved when the Waymarking website was created. I completely agree that in their current state Challenges need to be moved to Waymarking.com. HOWEVER, I have actually completed one of the older challenge caches and have started attempts on a few others. I think Challenges are great, if performed correctly. The "Hug Your Dog" challenge is not performed correctly. Of course, the old rules on posting a Challenge cache specifically directed the poster to create something challenging (go figure), the new feature does not have any real rules in the FAQ. This can be solved by directing all those Premium Members to the proper resources before allowing them to submit a new Challenge: Everyone should be required to read this info on Challenge Caches
  3. So the log date is no longer going to be displayed? Just some ambiguous time span such as "about 6 months ago". Please bring the date back! Seriously guys? Some people need to see specific dates. +1 to that! Dates are how we know exactly when the cache was last found. It helps me determine the difference between a DNF and a missing cache. I'd be happier to know that the cache was found exactly 3 weeks and 4 days ago instead of about a month ago. "About a month" can be anything from 3 to 5 weeks. Perhaps I'll be happier with the change if I know the reason.
  4. Does the army know you're giving out your DoD email address on the internet? I don't know much about smart phones, but I would assume that the app would work anywhere since I'm sure the phone works everywhere. Honestly, why not just try it and if it turns out it doesn't work, you could just order your GPSr while on your deployment.
  5. As Jayman11 said, a reviewer will just look over your listing to ensure it follows the guidelines for hiding caches. The reviewer will not actually visit your cache to make sure your coordinates are good or that there is actually a container there. You have the option (and should use it!) to post comments for the reviewer to see before he/she approves/declines your cache. This is quite helpful if you're posting any special type of cache.
  6. The way I see it, geocachers already can't use the sizes properly anyway, so adding more sizes will just make it worse. I've found numerous "small" caches that should be marked regular, and plenty of "regular" that should be micro. I don't even bother looking at the size chart now, though I always make sure to mark it correctly on my hides.
  7. Why do the hints now reload the page when you click decrypt and encrypt?
  8. Why are the links gray in the upper right corner where Usernames and the Log Out buttons are located? That makes it very difficult to see. And everything seems... bigger, less space friendly and a bit cramped together. Oh, and a bug I found is that when you put in a GC code that doesn't exist for the search thing on the homepage, the text that says, "Geocache Code not found" goes over the picture of the map.
  9. Could I do that online or is there a number to call?
  10. My brother was telling me how much he enjoyed the falls from the CITO event a few years ago and he wants to hike the trail again. Does anyone know if the falls are always flowing? Or do they dry up to a trickle? Any other information is appreciated too.
  11. If I understand correctly, you have one account just for you and then another account for your entire family. What I recommend is just use the account you made for just you. When you go out with your family, just write something that says your family was with you. If you want to have the two separate accounts, you will need to log all your finds on your account. You should then log the account for your entire family only if your family was with you, which means you will need to make 2 logs. (I don't find this method to be very great.)
  12. Edit: sorry, deleted this for duplicate post.

  14. Here is the link for the geocaching store: http://shop.Groundspeak.com/category.cfm?c...ID=5&home=t
  15. When you log the geocoin/travelbug, the drop down menu has a few options. You can retrieve it from the current location, discover it, or write a note. In order to move the cache into your possession until you place it, you need to select "Retreived from ... " When you do a Discovered log, that just means that you saw the geocoin/travelbug, but you didn't take it. You can use Discovered when you want to add the geocoin/travelbug to the list on the Trackables page of your profile.
  16. I've found one of 3 podcast caches in my area. You have to download the podcast and bring an mp3 player with you. That was pretty fun. Some good ideas for awesome hides can be found on ebay. Just google geocache. You can find some hollow bolts, fake security cameras, etc. I like the drilled out pine cone.
  17. I have found a cache within 15 minutes of the Instant Notification and I was third to find. Caches in my area are usually found within 5 minutes of the publish log. Puzzles might take an hour before the FTF.
  18. I've been thinking about hiding a cache like this for a while. The only concern I have is that it may force geocachers to go spend money on a movie.
  19. Isn't the forum what we use for comments? =)
  20. Probably not too big, especially with the .1 mile rule and all the other caches in the area, but I found it easier just to sit at my computer and wait until the maintenance was complete. Perhaps the reviewers could just copy paste the coordinates into their Published logs? That wouldn't even require any more code.
  21. Darn, found out about this too late. Site is down again... maintenance for this? =) Ooh that was fast, it's back up already.
  22. Can't do that until the site comes back up. I received a notification of a listing just before the site went down, but I haven't gotten the coordinates yet.
  23. I find it easiest just to create a new query when I need it. When I was a premium member last summer, I noticed that scheduled PQs took longer to arrive, while newly created PQs were in my Inbox within minutes. I'm not sure if anything has changed since then, but the newly created PQs still arrive fairly quickly.
  24. I just got an email telling me that a new cache was just posted .4 miles from my home coordinates. Eager to score another FTF, I clicked on the link for the cache page and, OH NO!, geocaching.com is down for maintenance. Can coordinates please be included so that this does not have to be a problem in the future?
