Ben H
The servers are hosted in the office and not a commercial data center or cloud? Yikes!! I seems that Frau Potter's comment above gave the wrong impression. All the servers for the website, API, etc are indeed in an offsite, commercial colo facility. The power outage temporarily stalled necessary fixes to certificates that caused the 500 errors experienced earlier today. Just a strange collision of circumstances. Quote Link to comment

+Viajero Perdido
But not in two or more geographically dispersed data centres? That sounds $$$. I once worked for a well-known DIY tax-return service, which naturally needed 110% uptime during April, no ifs, ands or buts. Their servers at the time were in a single well-provisioned on-site server room, but with power lines [or was it internet?] approaching from two different directions. That way one idiot with a backhoe couldn't bork thousands of tax returns in a single chomp. PS, just to set people's minds at ease as tax season rolls up, there were also other protective measures, including a second data center on hot standby in a faraway location, just in case. And maybe a third, dunno, not my department. Those people were pros. Edited January 11, 2017 by Viajero Perdido Quote Link to comment

+MartyBartfast
But not in two or more geographically dispersed data centres? Back in 2009, when there was a fire in the datacentre ( http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=225664 ), the servers were not dual hosted. I've no idea whether they are now but to be honest, for a system like this, there's no real need to host the kit in multiple DCs. If the servers are offline for an extended period nobody's gonna die or lose a lot of money.... Quote Link to comment

At one of the HP divisions the server room was in the basement of a six story building. The earthquake cause many of the pipe for the building plumbing to break. Guess where the water went. We're starting to migrate a lot of servers to AWS (Amazon Web Services) and some web applications that have high availability to a service they provide called elastic bean stalk. It has some really nice features for load balancing, but the cost vs. maintaining local hardware is one of the biggest reasons for the migration. Quote Link to comment

Managed to reset my password, but still can't log in to the site. Tried Chrome, FireFox and IE11 (the latter gives me the 500 - Server Error message). Quote Link to comment
