Carbon Hunter Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 With the increase of global temperatures and fossil fuels, it costs more to transport the metal to the producers,a nd more for the electricity to make the coins. So that's why we're Hunting Carbon out the atmosphere so that we can all cache longer!!!! [] Quote
Geo.Error Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Geocoins are so expensive because they want always on HOLIDAY. The coins want to travel everyday anywhere in the whole wide world. They sleep in different residences and demand every where the best treatment. The geocoins travels with car, train and sometimes even aircraft. The rumour is that there going in to space. +Carbon Hunter Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Even though the price is going up, I'm really glad I don't live in Zimbabwe. There the price goes up daily/hourly. I was there a few months ago and beer increased overnight (every night!). People often order and pay for drinks before a round of golf to beat the inflation that sits at around 1000% (yes - that is NOT a typo!!!!). Quote

ChadsClan Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 I'm surprised I haven't seen someone mention it yet, but I think it's the fact that all the coin companies are spending all their time making medals for the Olympics. And hence have a shortage of metals for coins, which they then charge a premium price for. Or maybe not. . . Quote
Pabloturtle Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Halliburton found some way to sell the Chinese their own raw materials. Quote

dardevle Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Maybe it is because of all those people you hear about that are steeling metels to recycle. And there is a domino effect. Cost more to patrol certain areas, consumes more fuel in doing so. Can not deliver coins or make them because fuel is being used else where. Quote
OwlCacher Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Because as long as geocoins are expensive, people will be answering this question (and potentially purchasing more). Quote

Terrier Team Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 yah know, I bet the manufactures are sitting back and laughing at us and thinking as long as they keep buying coins we can raise the prices and think they are fools for buying these things and we can laugh some more. I wonder how many of them are geocachers them selves? Quote
OwlCacher Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 They want to keep geocoin prices proportionate to gps prices- as new more expensive gpsr models are released. the coins go up in price as well. Quote

eklector Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Altho there are some really good resons given, personally I think you are all wrong - I happen to know the really reason(s) #1 it's very difficult to roll down a hill in a canoe with wings #2 It is virtually impossible to build a true life scale model of Mt Everest out of flapjacks and #3 the price of rice in China has no relation to the fact that one might ride a beer wagon to church on Sunday Quote
fairyhoney Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 It's definitely due to the rise in lead prices Quote
DaFunkyFrogs Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Geocoin prices have gone up because my rent is too cheap and I have to spend ALL my money every month. Quote

OwlCacher Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Yay time for proof by entailment! 1. Geocoins are cool. 2. Geocoins aren't cool. Conclusion: Geocoins are expensive. Quote

Sorry - there was a typo - the official inflation rate released yeterday is closer to 8000%!!!!!! The real reason though is that geocoins have become a fashion item - just you wait for the Spring collection to hit the Paris ramp - you'll see all those MIA coins we've been looking for - and we thought that coin theives were random! Quote
DaFunkyFrogs Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Geocoin prices have gone up because it's a plot to keep us from hoarding all the metals 'they' need for other things; such as space shuttles, satellite dishes and monkey cymbals. Quote
Geo.Error Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Why are geocoins so expensive ??????? There are many factors that are involved in creating a geocoin. Some of the first geocoins were relatively simple in design and did not include color. Also, most of these coins were usually sold cost and any profits that were made, were designated to go to the organization to the groups benifit. It was not uncommon for these coins to run in the 3-5 dollar range. With the addition of color, different metals and trackability, the cost have doubled and tripled. With more companies specializing in geocoins, there is a profit margin that they must make to stay in business. Quote
501_Gang Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Congress created bill GC-11019 Which is the Geocoin Act that raised the price of Geocoins to help pay back money to Social Security because of all the Baby boomers who are starting to retire. Quote
