Geocaching Organizations in the West and Southwest

Hemlock

Recommended Posts

This topic is to let you know about the regional geocaching organizations near you. These groups sponsor event caches and online forums where geocachers in the same area can get to know each other and share information. Geocaching organizations play a pivotal role in maintaining good relations with the land managers for the parks and forests where we play our game. Getting involved in your local group is a great way to make new friends and find answers to questions about the local caching scene.

It is up to representatives of the organizations to maintain this thread as a list of links to the Geocaching Groups in the West and Southwest. Please feel free to write a brief post about your geocaching group, giving its name, the area where most of its members live, and a link to the group's website, forums or mailing list. If your information changes later on, post a follow-up post.

Please do not use this pinned topic to promote individual events or initiatives that your group is undertaking. You can start separate topics for those. The moderating team may split out off topic posts into their own threads.

Finally, please note that this thread is not an endorsement by Groundspeak of any organization. It's just a convenient list of links.

Bay Area Geocaching and Mapping Group

This group is for people who want to meet other local enthusiasts to go Geocaching and/or to go Mapping. Anyone can join.

Geocaching

Geocaching is both a sport and a game. The idea is that people who like this game has hidden caches all over the world and all it takes to find them is the coordinates, a couple of clues and a GPS unit. Once found caches are often like a small treasure. The finder can take something from the treasure as long as they leave something for others to find.

Mapping

This group is also for people who are into or would like to know more about mapping for OpenStreetMap. This is another thing to do with your GPS unit.

OpenStreetMap is a project aimed at creating and providing free open source map of the world as an alternative to maps from TeleAtlas and Navteq that Google and others use. 56,000 people across the world are contributing to OpenStreetMap.

We contribute to OpenStreetMap by taking a handheld GPS device out walking either in an urban area or in a park. We record street names and other features, upload this data to a computer and make it into new roads and paths on the map.

orcacoast.org is a community effort to create a resource of information about our area for visiting Geocachers and the tens of thousands of tourists who visit the Oregon and California coast every year. It is also for those who are interested in learning about the many new places discovered while on the hunt.

If you would like to contribute information, photos, or stories about your area on the Oregon or California coast please share them in the forums, or send us an email and we will get your

information posted.

North County Cachers

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/northcountycachers/

"A group dedicated to sharing and implementing new and innovative geocaching ideas and types of caches in the northern area of San Diego County. Ideally, we strive to create caches in a clever, original or humorous manner. But it is certainly not beneath us to completely copy any cool idea dreamed up by someone else.

Primarily, we believe geocaching has been, is now and always should be FUN."

My girlfriend and I (Steven and Karissa for the SK in our moniker) just got the U of A's geocaching club "The CatCachers" approved and ordained for the upcoming fall semester. We won't have meetings or events until after the summer, but we need all the members we can get. People affiliated with the U can be full members and those not affiliated are allowed to be included, but can't vote in elections or organize events (universities rules, not ours). If anyone is interested, send us a message, there is no membership fee, so this is not a commercial advertisement, just a requirement to find a few caches each semester and hide at least one in the course of membership. We are still working on a website, so no links as of now.

Hi I have a group and we have a Facebook page called Porky's slaughterhouse. Technically there are 4 of us. Two of the members are moving to Idaho and the other member doesn't geocache much so mainly it's just me keeping up with the group page and going to find geocaches.

I would like to report/point out that two of the groups (the only two near me) for California, specifically the Greater San Francisco Bay Area group, and the Northern California geocachers, are both apparently dead or bogus links.

In the first instance, the "register" comes up as a 404 error. Secondly, the "contact us" link brings up the Yahoo mail form, but does not contain an e-mail address in doing so, and there is nowhere I can find on their site that lists the e-mail address. So you actually cannot contact these people.

In the second instance, (which is a Yahoo group) you get back an e-mail saying you were denied because the admin did not get back to you within 14 days. Excuse me?? Penalize the applicants for the inefficiency of the administrator???

So, in effect, there are NO local groups for me to join. I realize that this listing site is not responsible for the content of the respective listings, however, given that there seems to be no way for applicants to actually contact those responsible, and given the results I've seen, I feel these two groups should be removed from your listing.

Geocachers of the Bay Area

Very active group in the Bay Area. Lots of good information on the site, but registration/approval required to take part in the Forums. Let me know if you have any issues, and I can see if one of the Admins of the site can help you.

Thursday 3 November 2022

This is for the moderators of this section of the site. As I am going through looking for Geocaching groups here in California I have been noticing several things going on. First some of the posts are 10+ years old. The information on the posts are no longer accurate. A example would be posts that pertain to "Yahoo Groups". Yahoo Groups have been shut down for at least 5+ years! I would like to make a proposal to the moderators.

Can we delete the old posts like the ones that reference Yahoo Groups? Keep the ones that have a actual groups website?  Also if they have a Facebook Group web link. My sole goal is to keep the information CURRENT. This way the people who are new to Geocaching can have up to date information on groups to join.

Thank you,

David

In addition to the quoted explanation, please see this Help Center article with current guidance about local geocaching organizations.  There's a link there to a cool interactive map.
