/me must be stopid, what is MCE and UCR?

In case you didn't catch it before, MCE and UCR are used in Terracaching to "score" cachers and caches.

MCE - Something to do with Cache Excellence is based on user input (great, good, fair, poor, should be archived) plus difficulty (distance to hike, elevation change, etc)

UCR - User Contribution Rating - based on the scores of caches hidded and found etc.

The reference was a snide comment refering to this as establishing a scoreing or rating system among cachers.

OK - back on topic.

Wouldn't this rating be biased based on where you cache? I am located in the ozarks and have the majority of my finds around my abode. As a matter of fact, since I have cleared out every cache in a 35 mile radius, I now go for the closest cache, regardless of difficulty. I see the caches sneering at me from my map and on my GSAK filter. I eventually get fed up of seeing the same caches at the top of the list and go on a hunt to take them out...

Yes, it is skewed in that way. Many people are including scores from caches close to home and/or caches hidden to help bring that into perspective.

Also to skew things is that many folks cache on road trips and such where people do not tend to do high terrain, mystery, or multi caches.

It's kind of silly people are trying to compete since the caching history occurred before this software was written... which means the data is relatively free of manipulation. :)

But in the future, people might change their caching styles just to "pad their stats." Looks like you opened a can of worms there, fizzy.

Very cool tool.

Thanks to FizzyMagic for this cool tool to play with. I had often wondered about this sort of thing. I double checked it to only reflect caches I had physically been to. In case you are wondering the -1.0 terrain was on GC90, and if you have ever been there you know that it is definitely misrated, actually I think it predates ratings.

I think that it is interesting to note that most people's average is floating in the same area, which is a reflection of the game, no matter how you choose to play it. The fact is there are relatively few "difficult" caches when compared to the easier ones. Although, I generally focus on easier terrain while I am travelling, I do actively seek out high difficulty caches, usually an area will have less than five or ten high difficulty caches and my numbers reflect that. I think that it is also interesting that most of the areas that have been posted have fairly consistent numbers, even the dreaded Cacheville. I have travelled around some doing this and in my experience every area has good caches and every area has bad caches, and I never know what kind I am going to find until I go hunt it. I have been stumped by easy parking lot micros and I have easily found caches that were famous for their difficulty, it is all in the roll of the dice. The one number that cannot be quanitifed is the amount of fun I have had while caching, alone, with my wife or with friends.

This is a great program. I figured I was 'average' but I'm embarrased to see my average challenge is below 2 and the number of hard cahes found is only 9%! I never really paid attention to the ratings but now I'm going to take a more active approach at going after tougher caches. Fizzy, I especially like the info on the states and countries. I'm going to check out more info on the local caches, etc. Thanks for this.

If anyone is interested, I have a new and improved version of the program available in the same place.

I am a little concerned that people are using these stats to compete. I suppose it's inevitable, isn't it? Anyway, the new stats have considerably more information:

Add a breakdown of by cache type (traditional, multi, mystery, virtual, etc.) and container size (micro, small, regular, large, unknown, etc.) and I can get rid of the very slow GSAK macro I wrote to do statistics.

Well, to some extent. I wanted to see how I was stacking up against the oppotunities I have around me. I was surprised to find that at my 'Home' location the average challenge was just above 2 with 22% of them being 'difficult'. Near my 'Work' where I do most of my lunchtime caches the percent is around 8%. Gotta get out on the weekends more.

Just look at this thread and tell me it's NOT ABOUT THE NUMBERS. You guys practically wet yourselves over a new tool to manipulate your numbers. Even if your numbers are low, you are still intrigued by the numbers. Shame on you!!! :D

It's not about the numbers. It is about what it is you have done and how the manipulated numbers compare with your perception. :)

Shame? Never. Just a new way to justify it. :D

I may be the only cacher without an 'all found' gpx file laying around.  :)

If you go to your Pocket Queries page, click the button at the bottom, then you will have one shortly.

That is very cool. Clearly, I've been inactive too long.

My stats show that I mostly cache while driving from A to B, at lunchtime, or on trips. I am also likely to go find thirty easy caches if they are all in a clump.

The size breakdown would be interesting, but I'd like to see it by time, perhaps broken down quarterly since you began caching. This would possibly show how seasonal your caching is.

These numbers can be decieving, and will better serve to catagorize (pigeon hole) as opposed to competition.

I can't do 10 t-4 caches every weekend. But I can get 5-10 T-1 caches after work more often than not.

If it's snowy in the mountains, then I do non-caching stuff or I go get those T-1 caches in town.

That said, this stuff is cool to look at.

Premium members (yes, you too) can run an all finds PQ every 7 days. On your PQ page, below your defined PQ's, is an "All Finds" block.  Click on the "add to queue" button.  You'll have it in your default e-mail shortly.  This is all finds, archived caches and everything.

Dunno then.....I have clicked it twice since it showed up and nothing has happened yet....??

Two thing you need to be aware of.

1) You cannot specify the email address you want this PQ sent to. It will go to your default email address in your GC.com profile.

2) If you have a high find count this file can get quite large. Some people have had their ISP not deliver this file because of its size.

Beats me. Like I said I have clicked the bitton twice but I have not gotten the file either time. I use PQ's a good bit for out of town caching so I am used to the process. I don't consider my find count to be high either. Guess I will just wait awhile and see if it eventually shows up. Thanks.

If anyone is interested, I have a new and improved version of the program available in the same place.

I am a little concerned that people are using these stats to compete. I suppose it's inevitable, isn't it? Anyway, the new stats have considerably more information:

{snipped code}

Please note that locationless caches are not included in the countries and states. Naturally, since you don't go there.

Thank you; I will be checking this new version out as soon as time permits. I've used Watcher to track the same information, but this is automated.

Thanks also for stripping out locationless caches.

And no, I don't regard this as a "competition" thing. My original post to this thread commented only on what observations I could draw from the data on my own geocaching behavior: My finds, my hides, and the difference in finding activity in my home area vs. on the roadtrips I've taken. I like looking at my own numbers and analyzing them. In the process, I get to relive some of the memories from fun times in days gone by.

There are people in the thread with higher totals and people with lower totals. People with higher "difficulty factors," and others lower. Nobody's said a word about "mine's better than yours." I didn't even bother to check.

Even if *some* people want to use this tool as part of an ego-booster, there are others who just enjoy studying their own statistics. So thank you again for that.

I was very surprised when I looked at my stats. Like Lep, this brought back a ton of good memories.... I'll steal one of Lep's saying, BWGWF...

OK, I'll play along as best I can. Keep in mind I'm about 10 months behind in logging, and in the past year I have (generally) tried to concentrate on higher terrain/difficulty caches.

It took me a while to figure this out . . .

My All Finds PQ is missing 10 caches, but this is what I got using this very cool tool . . .

This includes the Locationless caches. I wish I had cached in Europe and in more states than CA and NV, but I haven't . . . :anibad:
