  1. pdadb.net for complete listing of ALL PDA phones.... The Pharos Traveler 137 is looking very nice. Due very soon and is very compatible with your list. The HTC Touch HD is currently considered the king of features, but the Toshiba TG01 may be it's successor... "BEST" is highly subjective and you will need to determine what is best for you. Price, features, etc.
  2. On the Jailbroken side, xGPS dowloads maps AND does turn by turn... Thanks for the topo link!
  3. Given that more and more devices are coming out with VGA resolution, it's frustrating that this issue remains unresolved after so long. Really negates the time and effort required to put together a cartridge when it can't even be displayed properly in the Wherigo Player... VERY short sighted. There seems to be a serious inability within Groundspeak to grasp the technology advances. VGA is here to stay as a mainstream screen resolution. WVGA is here and will be mainstream by years end and beyond. Unless they are attempting ot sandbox the player to whatever GPS manufacturer will partner with them. Which is not only an asinine strategy, but ultimately short sighted if attempting to build a user base. I have NO intention of buying a dedicated newer GPSR just to play. If the player worked on my Glofiish x500 VGA screen, I'd play....I love the concept. I would even enjoy learning the builder in an attempt to build my own Wherigo's.
  4. Glofiish x500+ (SIRFIII chipset) and Beeline GPS. Tried pretty much everything and always end up back with Beeline. BTW, I have a 3G iPhone and I think it sucks for caching.... Would love to see a new Geocaching program, something more finger friendly and 800x480 (WVGA) capable.
  5. Also crashing. Deleted. Reinstalled. Still crashing. Not impressed...
  6. There is no ability to manually enter coordinates; therefore, multi-stage caches are NULL.....
  7. So can we talk about it if we throw the GPX up on our own server? cuz that's what I do.... Still don't care much for it though. Looks like an early Palm app, clunky... Geopherlite- Works, still end up using my Eten x500+ with Beeline GPS. Accuracy and a screen with my track around the target. Nice for looking up caches nearby. Geode-Looks gorgeous, taking waaaaaaaaay to long in development. Official Groundspeak/Geocaching app- Looks nice as well, nice that I can download target caches prior to the hunt (will definitely help in low signal areas). Needs logging ability with picture upload. I'm not especially wordy on some of the crap caches, but there si usually a good picture to take along they way. Did I miss any?
  8. The more the merrier, IMHO... Each has it's strengths and weaknesses. None of them have yet implemented a screen that shows target AND breadcrumb trail. I use that screen almost exclusively on my Eten x500+ with Beeline GPS. The eTen is a far superior 'caching machine right now except you can't see the screen worth a darn in direct sunlight. iPhone wins there hands down. I'll buy them all @ $10/pop vs. some of the PPC programs costing upwards of $50. Thankfully you can trial PPC programs prior to purchasing which is a serious shortfall by Apple (that and the refusal to implement copy/paste, a discussion to be had elsewhere obviously). The Geocaching app looks like another good app to make the iPhone even more useful in everyday life. I have been sick of needing to "maintain" GSAK, download GPX files into programs, etc. prior to a caching adventure. With two little boys to wrangle, a small company to run and the rest of lifes joy's, I have little time to keep stuff "up to date". If this program helps make caching more spontaneous, than "Kuddos!" and here's my $10.... Now if that Geode app would ever get released..... :0
  9. Looks nice! Following on Twitter, as well.
  10. A teardown pic of the logic board from iFixit ( GPS chip is a Infineon Hammerhead™ II - PMB 2525) The Infineon manufacturer's page Wikipedia for aGPS A nice thread at macrumours addressing an errant poster. Real.GPS. To address the OP: My local ATT store was sold out and I have no desire to wait in line at the Apple store. Maybe Monday. If I snag one Monday, Ill do a little mini review here and compare it to my Glofiish x500+. I wish there were some caching programs available.... (opens iTunes to check the Navigation section again)
  11. Like I said-Not exactly accurate! Mine through Google maps puts me about 10 miles south of my house. It's does its best by freeways in the area. I'm running a pro license with Navizon and I have mapped all the surrounding areas with my Glofiish x500+, so it actually does a pretty good job of locating me. YMMV I'm still torn on the new one. The GPS would be nice... especially if someone writes a good caching program! We just went out today with our Glofiish's. They work OK with Beeline, but you can't see the screen worth a toot in direct sunlight. The iPhone is fully viewable. It's those extra data charges and need to buy 200 text messages (they did a good job creating a "need" by including the free ones in the Gen1 data package). That and spending another $400 to replace two perfectly good phones...
  12. Wrong. Gen 1 give you cel phone tower triangulation. Jailbroken phones with LocateMe or Navizon. Navizon and a license gives enhanced triangulation via WiFi ap's and cel tower triangulation. Even better if your area has been heavily mapped with Windows Mobile devices with GPS capabilities. Not good enough to cache with, but mighty handy for local searches... Also there is at least one program on installer.app that allows you to save maps locally (on the iPhone). Have no need of it myself, so haven't tried it. I doubt an Appstore version will be forthcoming, but who knows... Did you even read my entire post? Like sentence #1, maybe? Or the one a couple sentences before the one you quoted, which, if you read the whole thing, you'd figure out that at that point I was talking about when you're outside cell service? Actually, I thought I quoted your statement and replied quite well... I even read your whole post. Suprise. Me smart boy. Me can read. Me correct your assertion. Shall I restate that Gen1 phones DO have positional awareness in the form of cel tower/WiFi AP triangulation built into the Google maps app or added on through installer.app with Navizon or LocateMe? Not very accurate, but positional awareness, none the less. Simple as that. Sorry I corrected you.... Edited to add: If you had phrased it "Without the cel signal, Gen1 iPhone gives you no positional awareness" or "Gen1 would give you no positional awareness" I would have better been able to grasp your "context". Otherwise, it's tricky to catch the drift the way you wrote it. Either your a bad writer or I'm a dim bulb, but I think I already know which way you'll choose... Just talk real slow and don't wave your arms around to much. It distracts me....

  14. or you could just nav right to the cache listing on the iPhone.... I will even log them right at the cache if I'm not feeling wordy.
  15. In fact chances are that this price isn't a subsidized price. Apple would be selling it at a loss hoping to make money with the App Store. And it may work. (After all Sony is doing the same with its PS3... and it works, Blu-Ray has won the format war.) Sticking with subsidized...
  16. Wow, there is a single device ( no attachments ), with a 3.5 inch display, and GPS receiver for WM? Which one is that? PPC 6800, screen is just under 3.5 inches but it has everything else. As with the majority of the HTC manufactured devices, the 6800 has a 2.8" screen. There is one WM device with a 3.5" screen... Actually a 5" screen. The HTC Advantage 7501. A bit big for carrying around in the woods for my tastes, but a very powerful unit, NTL. Part of what makes the iPhone unique is the screen size and viewability in direct sunlight. As I mentioned earlier my Glofiish is worthless in the direct sun, but has killer GPS reception. Waaaaay better than my 60 CS. The Samsung Omnia, HTC Diamond or the Sony Experia x1 are the next generation of WM devices coming this fall. All very tempting in different ways! Apple, with product availability on July 11 will have quite a market lead though esp. with the $200 subsidized price point.
  17. I'm 51% there. Existing iPhone user who caches with a Glofiish x500+ (WM6 with integrated GPS). Just did two today and used the iPhone to look up the caches online. The Glofiish has a SirfIII chip and locks and holds exceptionally well, but the screen is unreadable in direct sunlight. Still a good caching machine though. My iPhone concerns are the type of GPS chip used. No info on that. Obviously, with the new app store, a Geocaching app can be written, but when and how good still unknown. I hope that some reviews get posted prior to the July 11 release. It almost sounds fun to do the wait in line thing. As far as the extra charges, not overly upset. Typical for American cell providers. There are several new WM phones coming (HTC Diamond, Samsung Omnia, Sony Experia1) with incredible feature sets that will eclipse the iPhone and work with ATT; however, they will cost beyond the $600 mark all, muting the additional equipment/data/text costs. I run the Glofiish as a 3rd line primarily for data (Geoscout is pretty neat, but poor for actul navigton) and the occasional tether session. I could dump that and recoup my costs there. Summary: Very tempted to "upgrade"! The faster browsing wouldn't hurt either. I'm always looking up stuff out and about. The integration of navigation and Geocaching would be sweet!
  18. Here's ours. '99, 4.5" lift with custom saggy rear springs, 33 x 12.5's, body damage by former owner. Shot taken after a maintenance run on my "Floodings" cache GCP4EC .
  19. Phones w/SirfIII i have the x500 and x500+. Work excellent for caching!
  20. Also take a look at the Fujitsu P1610 or the new P1620. Great little units with the added bonus of already available Ram mounts.
  21. The iPhone has a very nice Google maps app which relies on manually inputing your current location. It has absolutely no GPS features, either receiver onboard or ability to connect to a Bluetooth GPSR . There are also no caching programs currently available, though the browser renders and navigates geocaching.com exquisitely. It is a very nice phone with a gorgeous UI, but limited feature set, a beautiful walled garden, if you will. If you are really wanting a GPS enabled phone, ATT will be releasing the 8925 or HTC Kaiser shortly (if they haven't already), which is a Windows Mobile phone with a built in GPS receiver. This phone will be approx the same as the iPhone with a far more extended feature set. I use a Glofiish x500+ and my wife uses the x500 (hand me down). Both units with built in GPS and Windows Mobile and approx the same size HxW, with several additional mm's thickness. I have an iPhone as well. So... speaking from experience.
  22. Memory Map works very nicely for this. We just used it on my 10" Sony laptop this weekend (in the truck). GSAK has the appropriate export builtin and a simple right click/"go to mark" on the cache icon brings up several info boxes with compass arrow, distance, etc (I think they're customizable as well). Be a great topo map solution. Ton of different street level mapping software out there. MS Street/Trips is OK and you can export from GSAK. How are you gonna keep the OQO powered up? An inverter and charging cord 'tween caches would be nice. Even cooler a powered cradle. How are you gonna protect the OQO and deal with heat issues in the field? I just purchased a Sony UX50 (similiar dealy as your OQO) and I would be pretty hardpressed to carry it out into the woods. Be cool, but a rather expensive mistake, if...
  23. Just drag the .gpx file onto the top bar of Memory Map PC side.
