  1. The print PDF option does not seem to be working...could this be related to the new release?
  2. I like the idea and considered this a couple of times (didn't do it because the originals were archived because they kept getting muggled). Anyway, I used to be able to find achived caches using the check box on the 'map it' feature but since it's gone to Google maps I don't know how to find archived caches. Any suggestions?
  3. Not sure I understand if you can actually get to the mark or not, but with benchmarks I have had very good luck with a hardhat and clipboard getting to anywhere I want to go. On the few times I'm been asked what I was up to I just explain that I'm trying to locate a benchmark - hey, it's true! So if you can get to it with a stepladder or something get a stepladder and go for it - just bring the clipboard!
  4. You should try it. I especially like looking for Benchmarks that have not yet been found. It's like a first-finder free for all. Once you've found it, get a photo of your GPS next to the disk for proof.
  5. I agree. I have been involved in construction projects where the plans specifically call for a disk to be "recovered and given to the engineer"; which normally means it becomes a paperweight for one of our civil servants. Other projects have made no mention of them and they meet the same fate as other debris; it all depends on the agency doing the work - the higher up (i.e. State, Federal) the better chance the disk will be reset - towns and county DPWs less so. I have come across what I thought were marks that were obviously destroyed only to find them under several inches of dirt and sod.
  6. All good information and suggestions, thanks to everyone. The trail in question is relatively new and a bit out of the way. I wondered if having caches there would increase awareness of the trail and the area. The web page for the trail encourages visiting the trail and stresses keeping the area as pristine as possible. Good idea to stress CITO. I found e-mails for local and state contacts so I think I'll drop them a line and see if there's someone with authority that I can talk to about this.
  7. I know of a really nice trail that I'd like to investigate putting a cache or two along. I see the trail is owned and/or maintained by The Nature Conservancy. Before I contact them I thought I'd check and see if anyone has had previous experience (good or bad) in getting approvals from them to place caches.
  8. Well, that was fun; thanks to all who wrote. Time to close this thread. For those who missed my attempt at sarcasm, it's my fault. If you don't know what I'm saying then I'm not 'splaining myself good enough. No hard feelings? Next time I'll try to keep it short. One last thing - wimseyguy, your check is in the mail.
  9. Try this. Yeah it's rude to be messing with anothers cache location. But reading some of the logs this one seems a bit precarious. I'm not fond of heights so I might not have even tried for this.
  10. You betcha! Well, it IS in an ammo box, but the good news is, the box is welded shut. I may have to get a ruling on this. Didn't Ozguff have an experience with this sort of thing?!
  11. Fair criticism. I'm still sorta new at this forum thing...
  12. I want to place a cache and based on a lot of the recent discussions in the forums I want to make it a cache that everyone can enjoy. Therefore I am submitting it here prior to submitting it for approval in case there’s any ‘tweaking’ that needs to be done. It will be a puzzle cache but, of course, I do not list the puzzle below. Please read this over and comment. Be sure to read the entire post, especially those italics at the bottom! ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Solving the puzzle will give you the coordinates to the cache container, well at least the coordinates at the time of submitting for approval. Once it’s approved I will move it a short distance to a better place which just happens to be on private property. Be prepared to do some head scratching on this one. Logs that indicate you have not scratched your head will be deleted. Heavy bushwacking to the cache site will be required. Please be respectful and do not break, bend or otherwise disturb the vegetation in this environmentally sensitive area. You must approach this cache from a different direction than the previous finder. If I believe that you have disturbed the area while searching for this cache I will delete your log. Once you find the cache you may log it as a ‘find’ online. Any return trips to the cache (Travel Bug drop off, for example) should be logged as a ‘note’. Finders who have not adequately tried to persuade me to offer additional smilies will have their logs deleted (I accept Pay Pal). I take my puzzle-making skills very seriously therefore I must insist that each person logging the cache as a ‘find’ must have solved the puzzle completely on his/her own; no help from other cachers, non-cachers, reference books, Google, etc. will be allowed. Each cacher must first send me a sworn statement of fact that he/she has personally solved the puzzle before I give my permission for you to log your find. Please fax notarized staements to (***) ***-**** Logs submitted before permission is granted will be deleted. I verify the online log with the physical log. Once you log online I will immediately drive the ten miles and walk to the cache to check the physical log. They better match or you know what! I log all my DNF’s and I must insist that cachers looking for my caches do the same. If you have in any way looked for, started to look for, or thought about looking for this cache without finding it you MUST log a DNF. Cachers who do not find the cache and fail to log anything for it will have their logs deleted. If you find anything objectionable about this cache please open a thread on the forums and flame me to your heart’s content. People failing to flame me will have their logs deleted. Thank you for looking for my cache and I hope that this will be a positive experience for you! Persons who have not found this to be a positive experience will have their logs deleted. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ (In the interest of full disclosure and the fact that it is difficult to discern a tone of voice through the written word, the above cache information is intended as a joke. It has no basis in fact because it is just too darn cold to go outside and cache. Your comments to this are welcome – people who write disagreeable things about me in the forums will have their logs deleted.)
  13. For me the cache is the thing. When I tell people about Geocaching they look at me like I'm nuts until I tell them that I have gone to places - parks, mountaintops, trails, etc. that I never would have even known about let alone thought about going to. Almost everyone responds well to that. My favorite is a multi-mile hike with my teenage daughter. GC5550 The starting point is tha little spot of grass in the upper left.
  14. Hey, what do we do about this section of the FAQ? (Emphasis added) (edited for quote clarity)
  15. Ditto here. My daughter has gone on some as did my wife. Wife has been on a number of DNF's so she says she's bad luck. Daughter will go but she's not really into it - she still has to log those finds from two weeks ago. Being alone in the quiet ain't so bad in this hectic world.
  16. I am a man but once my 14 year old daughter and I took a 4 mile hike to a cache at the top of a small mountain. Based on the lack of vehicles in the parking area I figured we were OK but when we got up there (and I was really struggling 'cause I'm out of shape) there were a couple of pretty inebriated guys who got there via an ATV. They were barbequeing, drinking and kept eyeing her; I was a nervous wreck. Turns out everything was fine and they turned out to be friendly but that was a long way from help if we needed it. Gave us something to talk about father-to-daughter and gave me a new perspective.
  17. I thought about buying the Garmin 3600 but I use an old Palm V that was tossed in a box at work. Along with GSAK and Cachemate it's all I need. The only downside is trying to hold two things while crashing through the woods.
  18. Well, to some extent. I wanted to see how I was stacking up against the oppotunities I have around me. I was surprised to find that at my 'Home' location the average challenge was just above 2 with 22% of them being 'difficult'. Near my 'Work' where I do most of my lunchtime caches the percent is around 8%. Gotta get out on the weekends more.
  19. This is a great program. I figured I was 'average' but I'm embarrased to see my average challenge is below 2 and the number of hard cahes found is only 9%! I never really paid attention to the ratings but now I'm going to take a more active approach at going after tougher caches. Fizzy, I especially like the info on the states and countries. I'm going to check out more info on the local caches, etc. Thanks for this.
  20. No, it was an attempt at sarcasm to express my amazement about the efforts taken in this entire episode.
  21. "Ah, but the legitimate post! You see, that's where I had him!"
  22. There’s 13 inches of lake effect snow outside and the high might get to 30 degrees so no caching for me today. I decided to surf the forums to get away from my whining and fighting kids and I come across whining and fighting adults! My better judgment says to leave this topic alone but what the heck… I don’t think I’d give permission for someone to log a find on one of my caches that was obviously not found. However, I don’t know the circumstances as to why the owner allowed it; there may be a good reason or there may not. Perhaps the “finders” showed the owner that they clearly made it to where the cache had been only to find the container missing. I don’t know the reason and I’m pretty sure neither does Ozguff. Regardless, isn’t it up to the cache owner? So while I agree in principle with you, Ozguff, I think that posting an out of the blue rant on the cache page the way you did was out of line. And to add the sarcastic line about logging all yours as finds was only asking for trouble. I don’t agree with his response but I guess I give Geoofficer credit for an equally sarcastic comeback. I think even the name “Geoofficer” is a shot at you. Had I been in your position I would’ve deleted my rant from the DNF and offered apologies all around. But hey, we New Yorkers are known for being such nice folks! Guess I’ll forget the forums and get the boots and gloves on.
