Stories of my demise have been greatly exaggerated...

I've been very busy working on the Historic US 80 Committee. They also decided to "volunteer" me onto the non-profit corporation. In a few short months we've gotten the state senate and assembly to designate US 80 an historic route.

For those driving US 80 on October 21st (maybe heading out to Anza) there will be a ribbon cutting drive all along the route. The San Diego ribbon cutting is at 7am near Seaport Village. Events will take place along the route in San Diego, Balboa Park, La Mesa, El Cajon, and Alpine. Classic cars will drive east to a car show and vendor event in Viejas. Simultaneously, a group will be driving west from Yuma to Viejas.

I've also been working on my AmericanRoads web site, especially the US 80 California section. I'm making the "official" drive maps for the committee and the October event. Research at Caltrans, the downtown library, and UCSD, as well as making the maps using Illustrator, has taken up much of my time lately.

The county was evidently so excited about the historic route status that they decided to install 28 brown historic route signs in the county areas. Some are already up near Alpine and Viejas. I'm on the sub-committee for getting the whole road in California signed.

Here's my US 80 California page, which features 12 (provisional) drive maps so far:

http://www.americanroads.us/ushighways/ushighway80CA.html

The California section of my Photo Tour is done (I drove all the way on 80 to Rodeo, NM).

A photo of one of the new brown signs appears on the news page:

Very cool, Steve. Now get a case of Altoids and make sure every one of those brown signs has a log-only-micro attached to it! :D (Let's hope for a little more creativity than that...)

That is very cool Steve! All we can do is hope Tom. B) I think Parsa should have first dibs on placing a fun cache/cache series along his new route. I would be willing to contribute 5 ammo boxes myself. B)

By the way Steve, the other day I was showing my daughter some of the photoshops on the Banter thread and she saw you in one of them. Blame Harmon! B) Anyhow, she commented that you have lost a lot of weight since that photo was taken. So I wanted to congratulate you on losing the weight. I also thought that might make you feel good to know that the students at OG have noticed! :D

Thanks TG for the note.

In regards to EarthCaches... I just got a glossy tri-fold pamphlet in my school mail box the day before yesterday from the Geological Society of America. It was all about earthcaches and showed folks with GPS receivers walking around. It was fun getting that at school. Now, if you'd all contribute a GPS to my students... Hehe. B)

O, so you don't like sixty-six any more?

Well, in my continuing efforts to bite off way more than I can chew... I've incorporated the Virtual 66 web site into my American Roads web site. It's dedicated to all pre-Interstate auto trails and highways.

BTW, I'd very much appreciate the Rowdies, Vulture, and anyone else with knowledge about 80 to check out the information and maps, and provide feedback. I know the folks out along 80 know people, stories, and history that I'm unaware of.

As many of you know, there are already a lot of US 80 geocaches. A good example is the power caching series on Wildwood Glen near Descanso. In regards to that section... using aerial photos with CalTrans right of way maps from 1917 superimposed, I was able to trace the original road in the area. I did a lot of detective work and computer magic to figure stuff out. Here's an example of the aerial maps I made during research:

Viejas to Wildwood Glen c.1917

http://www.americanroads.us/aerialmaps/Wil...iejas-Track.png

Wildwood Glen to Guatay c.1917

http://www.americanroads.us/aerialmaps/gua...dwood-track.png

I've driven down 80 and cached with both Ruscal and Dave (dhsundance) and I guess that got me interested as much as anything else.

Parsa

Parsa,

For sure I have a few insights about the Old 80 section between Viejas and Golden Acorn. It surprises a lot of people to learn just where the old roadbed actually ran, especially through Pine Valley and from La Posta Road through Golden Acorn. It did not follow the Old 80 route that we know today. I looked into that section extensively while doing benchmarks through that stretch and I also know some back-country people related to settlers like the Buckman, Thing, and Cameron families.

There's two or three of the Cowboy Caches that deal with early history along old 80. That reminds me, you might be interested in seeing an old-time gravity-feed gasoline station that's stored just south and over the ridge from Sandy Creek Cowboy Cache No. 10. There's an old roadbed that goes over the ridge right where Cowboy No. 10 and the water trough are located. It's a short walk. I've always wanted to know the history of that old relic but never found anything out about it. Could have been situated along Old 80.

I've also got a pretty good idea of the original route that Old 80 took through Pine Valley. Some of the alignment can still be seen in aerial views. The Splashes know the setup of the cafe and bus terminal that was located at the junction of Sunrise Highway and Old 80 back when they were courting. She worked at Major's and he was stationed at the Mt. Laguna radar installation. You know how far back Janie goes, sheesh, probably before the old route was graded. She might have dated the surveyors when they came through. Coming off of eastbound I-8 one can see the road cut where Sunrise passed by the old junction cafe. There's still some old blacktop around the road cut. There's an old photo of the cafe and by aligning the mountain ridges that are in the photo with the existing ridges I figured out where the cafe was located.

The Pine Valley library sells a small book with semi-accurate historical information about the section of the old road that I refer to. That book will be useful to you. Also let me know if the obelisk where Amos Buckman is buried would figure into your effort. Amos Buckman's great grandaughter Barbara Turner lives toward the south end of La Posta Road and she willingly offers information and clarification about her young days in that general area. There's another Buckman descendant that lives in north county that has a lot of published material about the old Buckman era. Barbara worked in the old bottling plant and was born in and lived in the old hotel where our cowboy cache named "La Fantasma de los Cruces" is located.

Also I endured many trips along old 80, back and forth, during the early forties. Once I had a large splinter of the old board-highway deep inside my finger that stayed there for years. Finally it festered and had to be removed. Too bad I didn't save it for you.

I'll go through the stuff on your links and see if I can offer anything useful. That first link doesn't seem to work by the way.

Hey friends & fiends,

I'm having problems with my pc (what else isn't new??) It had crashed so I had to reload all of the software. Now I can't download waypoints to my gpsmap60cs from gsak. I also can't open the maps on the trip & waypoint manager. Yes, I inputed the 25-digit registration #, which didn't do anything. HELP!!! :D;)

Is the PC recognizing the GPS when you plug in the USB connector? (It should make a ding sound when you plug it in or unplug it) Edited by TrailGators

Hey HelBob Duo,

Got yourself in a mess did you? Here's my guess, that you lost the GSAk setup for your Garmin when your system toasted. If so then on the GSAK Menu Bar select "GPS/Setup." That should bring up the GPS Setup screen shown in the image below.

Make the settings for your Garmin USB interface as shown below and then click OK. If that doesn't work then say so but be sure to blame it on Trailgators.

On the surface, it appears to be a good deal; Amazon is selling it for $219. However, the reviews give it a dismal 1.5 of 5 stars.

A reviewer sums it up best, "My recommendation is to accept this unit as a gift and invest your money elsewhere."

Woot tends to sell close-out items at dirt cheap prices, and you get what you paid for; I bought from Woot once - once!

Rigged, OK, I admit it we paid the chili judges to pick ours, sure they were cheap, especailly Fatboy, but the $1,000 seamed like a small price to pay for such an honor.... Oh, wait a minute, they're saying you cheated, well never mind my previous comments. Did the waypoints have "TC" in front of them? If so, that would narrow it down to the Terracachers. I could check the TC website to see who was out there at that time. Those guys won't check these threads. BTW that was very nice of you and your buddy to look for the owner! Edited by TrailGators
