  1. Hi all, Am coming to BC Oct 28th, driving from VC to Whistler in a Camry or similar rental. I hope to pick up a few caches while there, altho I wont be spending a lot of time caching. Ive got some beta on VC caches, but was wondering about any "must do" caches on the way to or in Whistler. Im a competent hiker/climber (non-technical) so don't mind some 4-5 star terrain caches, altho the forecasted rain may be a bother. Thanx!
  2. ...another late bloomer here [donning armor for ridicule and cheap shots], but I've been rather busy and have not had time to really find out why our event caused so much comotion. And to think, all I was trying to do was to provide resources that trip participants could utilize if they were so inclined to learn a little about the history of the area in which we would be traveling (we were "in area" of significant events of the 1849 crossing of Death Valley by the first "white man" enroute to the 1849 California Gold Rush) as well as provide resources to learn about the natural beauty of this area... afterall, it IS wildflower season in DV and one of the "links" provides a "thermometer" of wildflower blooms in several California deserts. Our itinerary and my list of resources published on our trip page was then placed on the event page so potential geocachers would have access to all the information. Who knew, that trying to be helpful, that trying to provide the gift of knowledge would erupt into such controversy. Granted, Ive been living in a cave and didn't know much about the "rules" banning "commercial" links. From reading the previous posts, it does appear that there is subjective intrepretation of the "guidelines", which isn't necessarily a bad thing. When denying a cache page, a general statement identifying the "issues" at hand is helpful, but may not be enough. If I had submitted the event and received the reviewer message, I would have been very confused, as in "what commercial content". Then, all heck breaks loose... and event organizers may get angry, have to send off emails to either reviewer or appeals persons... eventually stealing time from everyone. Would it not be more efficient, in the long run, if the denial message was much more clear as to the denial reason, possibly even with a suggestion as to how to get the event approved? So, we missed out on one more smiley. Maybe others missed out on a handful of smileys. Navigating dry waterfalls, rock gardens, and water crossings, standing near wild burros, photographing rare wildflowers, touching history, sharing all this with friends.... priceless [ie, smileyless] .
  3. FOUND GPSr A hiking acquaintance found a GPSr up near Mineral King in September. There were several waypoints loaded for the North SD county area. The WPs weren't GC WPs, but I still said I'd post a message here (Ive lost 4 GPSrs and can appreciate the bummed-out feeling of loosing one's machine). If you think it might be yours, please PM me or email me via GC.com.
  4. Thanx Briansnat. I am now official fed up with the transit system's websites. To add NJ to my state caches, I may end up having to take the train across from lower Manhattan. It looks like the first stop is Secaucus Junction, but I can't find an exact address or locate it on Google Earth to find it if there's any caches w/in walking distance. So, basically, Im looking for a short train trip from Manhattan to NJ, and a cache w/in walking distance of the station so I can hop back to NYC. Any ideas???? THANX soooooo much! I'll letya know how it all turns out.
  5. Thanx for the replies re: public transportation to NJ. Me and 3 muggles are renting a car Friday and going north, but if there's time maybe we can head to NJ for a couple Palisades caches. THANX again!
  6. Im from Southern California and will be in NYC next weekend 9/28-10/1. Are the NJ Palisades caches accessible via public transportation from the Financial District? Thanx
  7. I just saw a picture of Robert come up as a gc banner. Nice dedication to his mountaineering spirit.
  8. OMG. Trail Angel... I am so sorry and sad to hear of this news. The eastern sierra is my home away from home. Despite numerous adventures in the sierras for 30 years, geocaching took me to places I had never been, and to spectacular sights I had always just whizzed by. Of Robert's 25 caches, I found 15 of them. I so looked forward to each summer and what new places Robert would take me to. This summer, I, along with Flatiron and Mrs Rangler and Bloomin' Fun were ftf on his Hidden Lake cache ... a year old unfound sierra cache and a true gem which took me to an expansive plateau above the Owen's Valley. A self portrait at his Elephant Walk cache was featured as a gc banner this summer also. He taught me the geography and history of the region in such a humble way. His contributions to the true spirit of geocaching are applaudable. Thank you for adopting his caches. They're all on my to-find list. I will be in Mammoth in January, and would appreciate being kept in the loop about the Inspiration Day... if I can.. I WILL BE THERE. Robert was an inspiration to me as a human and a geocacher. Robin
  9. New WPs in a dowload Apologies for this lame question, but it's been bugging me and Im just not understanding the help screens. When I load a PQ to an existing database, I want to be able to quickly and visually identify new waypoints that have been added, e.g., what caches are there now that weren't there before. I've tried clicking on Set User Flag as well as and ONLY update if user flag is matched, but each time, a flag is set for waypoints that already existed in the database, even though there's no new logs for them. How do I get the user flag to mark only the NEW waypoints that have been added? I know there is a really simple fix, but Im just not gettin' it.
  10. THANX... I have several to add to the Mtn Summits category, but will wait to see if my suggested subcategory of California Summits 10K and Higher gets approved, as that's where they really belong.
  11. Perhaps I missed this in the FAQ, but can someone log a traditional cache and a waymark for the same place? For instance, there's a traditional cache on top of summit X. Can summit X also be set up as a waymark in the Mountain Summits category?
  12. I would like to have a California Summits 10K and Higher subcategory of the Mountain Summits category. First, Im only interested in high summits, and it would also be a way to group them by state, since searching by state doesn't currently seem possible - or perhaps I just didn't look hard enough. Like some of the other summit waymarks, loggers would post pix of the summit and describe the trail/route they took to get there.
  13. Hey, did FullOn go on vacation and forget to pay the bill again? Warning: main(db/db.php): failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/socalgeo/public_html/includes/sentinel.php on line 37 Fatal error: main(): Failed opening required 'db/db.php' (include_path='.:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/socalgeo/public_html/includes/sentinel.php on line 37
  14. Im with you Trinity, especially in areas where access is not obvious, maps may not be helpful for access, and trailheads are hidden. I love caching, but I would rather spend my time hunting the cache, not the parking spot... isnt' that why they call it geocaching and not geoparking? I will drive away from a cache if I can't figure out how to access it. Having said that, if it's a cache that folks are raving about and I would really miss out on something special, I will usually ask previous finders or cache owner for access directions.
  15. WOOHOO... Happy GBD Team 360. I'd say that makes you a second generation cacher . You made me look up my crash landing into this world, which was November 26, 2001... it woulda been 6 months earlier, but I was too afraid to turn on the GPSr
  16. Klemmer and TeddyBear Mama recently mowed the area and have a real nice write up with a link to a track log. See this SCG forum thread for more info. !
  17. IMHO... I always thought geocaching was about finding the cache, not the access area. In So Cal, the Mapquest map is sufficient for most caches. However, in areas of twisting roads, hidden trailheads, and one-way streets, I'd much rather be spending my time looking and/or hiking to the cache instead of figuring out where to park. I always provide parking instructions if access is questionable.
  18. I've lost 3 GPSrs! #1: Left on the top of my 4Runner and drove off. Realized it within the hour, drove up and down the road we had been on only not to find it. #2: Left it at a cache at the top of the Palm Springs Tram ($20 fee to take the tram). Notified the rangers, the Lost & Found etc.... Returned a week later, paid the $20 again, but didn't find my GPSr... and no geocacher had been to the cache since I had been. #3, and the most legitimate...This time it was clipped to my belt, but as I slid 15-20 feet down a rock cliff and into bushes of a ravine, I became disconnected from both my GPSr and walking stick. This was the fall in which I broke my wrist. The cache owner took pity on me, did the 7 mile round trip twice and found the walking stick, but not the GPSr. I sure do like that new 60cs, but Im not allowed to have one... or so Im told.
  19. Slid 15-20 feet down a rock cliff and broke my wrist, the scaphoid to be exact. A nasty bone to break because it has the worst blood supply in the body. Not a bad fracture, and it was in a part of the bone that is near the blood supply. Was splinted for 10 weeks and am very happy Im alive to tell about it. I was an arrow slave the day it happened. You can read about it at Pandora's Box on 3/27/04.
  20. I'l be there. www.socalgeocachers.com doesn't need to be running in order to chat... as long as you've already downloaded the stuff to make it work... I did that a LONG time ago and couldn't tell ya how, but I better remember real quick cuz I gotta start using my new computer soon.
  21. Hmmmm... Ive been in the Tuesday night chat the last two weeks... I connect through mIRC.
  22. It's kinda like the OLD days... pre-SCG. Am I dating myself
  23. There is one admin for southern california... well, from about Monterey on down, which is quite far north if you ask me, and he's on a well deserved vacation right now. There is a new admin but this admin just came on board and Im not sure what gets sent to him/her versus the other california admin who is handling ALL of california right now. We patiently wait....
  24. just fyi...The Southern California Geocachers picnic has been set for July 10th! Would love to come up to the event.... any other weekend in July
