Does 4 wheel drive make up for chains? If they are requiring chains, they will let 4 WD vehicles through without them on but sometimes they check to make sure you have them with you. Just showing them any old set of chains will usually do the trick. RM Quote Link to comment

I remember a 10 mile stretch of I94 one time that had 50 cars slide off the road because the road so deceivingly slippery. That road was not steep at all abd those guys drive on snow and ice all the time! So those going out there need to be extremely careful going down the grade! Quote Link to comment

+Miragee
I once drove from Carlin, NV to Eureka, NV on a snow-covered road that hadn't been plowed yet. I was stupid! It was very treacherous and took more than four hours to travel the 90 miles. I drove very, very carefully and made it. However, I did see one vehicle off the road in a ditch. It was a 4WD. I echo what TG says. Be very careful driving on the wet and slippery roads. Quote Link to comment

I just heard on the radio they have closed Sunrise Highway for the whole weekend. Crud! There goes half of my plan. I guess we'll have to stick to the coastal and tunnel caches this weekend. +Let's Look Over Thayer
Driving down steep icy roads can be very tricky even for 4x4's! It's best to remember that while only some cars have Four Wheel Drive, almost all cars have Four Wheel Braking! (When we lived in Colorado, there was never any problem getting replacement body parts for the back ends of 4WD vehicles. The auto junk yards always had a good selection in any color you needed. Replacement hoods and grills, however, were pretty scarce!) Quote Link to comment
+Tycho52
FYI, this is a good site for forecasts - you can click all around the county instead of having to type anything in:http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/sgx/ Thanks! Here is what that site says about the area around Borrego: The bummer part is, that normally when it rains over on here on the coast, it gets really windy in the desert. We'll make it a good time regardless of the weather! Brutal forecast. This weekend I was supposed to be camping at Agua Caliente with the Ecke YMCA Indian Princesses. We were looking forward to the Mud Caves and some caches (we've always stayed at Blair Valley, and the girls absolutely love caching there - in addition to the official geocaches, we usually plant 3 or 4 temporary caches filled with girl swag like beads and plastic jewelry). Given the forecast, we decided to bag it. It's going to be a movie weekend for us. I can't imagine anything less fun than sitting in a tent in the cold rain with 20 MPH winds and snow 500 feet above us, and then hauling all that wet stuff home. Instead, I'll enjoy a glass of wine or two and catch up on many months of GC Forums that I've missed. Good luck in Ocotillo! Tycho Quote Link to comment

+Tycho52
At the end of the month I'm going to be backpacking with my kids in the Cleveland Nat'l Forest. We're going to be taking the Tenaja Trail - Fisherman's Camp Loop. This might be a stretch, but I'm trying to find out if anyone has a GPX file of that route, or knows a way to make one. I've got two days left on the 14 day trial of TRails.com, and I can download a gpx file over their Topos. Since I'm going to be indoors all weekend, I have time to goof around on the computer and convince my wife that I'm doing something beneficial as long as it LEADS to a recreational activiity. Any thoughts would be welcomed. Thanks! Tycho Quote Link to comment

We were cut off on all three roads out of Pine Valley for about 3 hours. The bridge had 2 incidents, one in each direction requiring closure, including a snowplough that got stuck. So as we were sitting in Pine Valley on a non-geocaching matter, what was I to do for four hours....Tiff knitted, I rumaged up some plunder for a new cache. We drove out all right and I only have a front wheel drive sedan but those with chains got out around lunch. Say, you could have stayed completely out of the Pine Valley weather by doing a find on my grandson's GCRRVH cache. It's right there in the center of the village. Love the photo, sunny day in Perth perhaps? Harmon Edited March 12, 2006 by SD Rowdies Quote Link to comment
