OMG!!!What an awesome coin. Received it yesterday.

Will take it to events so that others can "discover" it as I fear that it may not last too long in the wild here in the north country although from its' weight and hugeness it would probably make it difficult to pocket it. It would almost make you walk lopsided.

Thanks for the beautiful coin. Well done.

Quick question -- anyone planning on circulating theirs? It is kind of expensive to circulate IMHO, plus it just begs to be kept. Any opinions?

I've activated one for release. I need to attach a mission card to it before I find a cache big enough to hold it. Its mission? To be photographed at the initial point.

There is a microcache nearby, less than 100 feeet from the Initial Point. That will make a nice goal for you coin. They can look it up and grab the nearby cluster of benchmarks. Glen

I have one of mine ready to go out also, my mission was also going to be to get to the Initial Point and have rattling crew pick it up and then me get it from him when I make my run out there at spring break.

One bronze discuss and a copper plate for my collection. Needed the wheel barrow to get them inside. My back hurts! Where do I send the medical bill?

I am activating one and nailing the other one to a phone pole. <_<

You ought to try standing in line with 100 or so packed up ready to ship! I was happy to get to the counter! If you want me to pick it up, be sure to send me the TB number so I can watch it. I love the country up there and would be glad to go get a spare hubcap for my Dodge. Glen

:o I'm still watching my mailbox for the two I ordered, I keep seeing posts of folks getting theirs and I'm starting to get jealous. None today, but hopefully they'll be here in my Monday mail. Is it possible to check to see if they have been shipped yet? ;)

monday is columbus day.

no mail that day.

i know how you feel.

i will have to wait till tue. to

get my personal geocoin samples......!

:o...RATS... ;)

I'll drop another pair off at the post office. To my knowledge, this is the first of these not to arrive. I had one go to Washington State on the last set of coins. His did not arrive, I sent another out. He then got both of them on the same day, one was stamped "found in an empty container." I had one Compass Rose not make it to Canada, I think out of all the coins I have shipped, I have been pretty lucky. Glen

edited because I made a spelllllling error...

Columbus day? That expression is new for me! Can you explain it? I like new English/American "sayings". <_<

On the 12th of October in the year 1492 Columbus discovered America. <_<

This day is still celebrated in the USA at the 2nd monday in October.

In the Spanish speaking countries it is known as : Dia de la Hispanidad

Columbus Day, a holiday for many in the government sector, but not many in the private sector. Not that I am complaining any, I get ten paid holidays a year plus a floating holiday. Couple that up with four weeks vacation and an accumulated 1600 plus hours of sick time and I can miss almost a year.

Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue in search of a shorter route to the Indies, instead, he beached a boat here on the North American Continent and is generally given credit for discovering the North American Continent.

That magical day was October 12, 1492, the earliest recorded celebration of Columbus Day is thought to be October 12, 1792, making it one of our oldest holidays. Now that you have all that trivia to ponder... I am glad everybody seems to enjoy these monster coins. Glen

And eh... yes Glen, your coins are awesome!! They arrived 2 days ago.

I have written to Dansco (the coin album maker) to provide 3" coin sheets, but you seem to be the first in the world with a 3" coin.

(in other words, they don't have'm)

Ha, I just in time noticed that we were typing this at the same time also. LOL

Alright I have done some research, Apparently a 3" coin is a model z direct fit from Air-Tite. Model Z is 3.024" x .286"

Air-tite.com has this size for $1.60 each.

Collectors Outpost has two options for Model Z. One is for the 5 oz. and the other is for the 10 oz.. I am guessing the only difference is the thickness? They are a $1.52 each.

KayMarie.com has them for $1.75. Again 5 oz. and 10 oz.

Do we have any idea how many ounces these are? I can weigh one when I get home if we don't know. I hope this gets you started.

Posted

4.5 ounces, but I doubt that the coin weight is what they are talking about. I suspect it has something to do with the weight of the slip. All metals have different weights, these would be really outrageous in solid gold, silver or even brass. I think we priced these in brass and just the coin was close to 9 dollars, then we would have had tracking numbers, freight, mailers, icon fees, holy cow, the "these cost too much whiners" would have had a heart attack, shell shock, ....... I would have had more passes than Dan Marino. <_< Glen

Any chance I can still get one. I sent an email back but never heard back. I assume it never went through. Stupid spam filters...

I'd reaaaalllllyyyy like at least one coin, without having to go to ebay...

Just finished opening mail last night after returning from a trip to the contiguous lower Americas... and saved those lovely lovely geocoin mailer envelopes until last. My wife had hid this one on me (she who loves to cache and who barely... just barely... tolerates the insane benchmark hunts)... and pulled it out for my inspection at midnight last night, after bearing through my delight at all the other coins which arrived while I was away. What a prize! I'd honestly forgotten about the order (yeah - call me clueless) but she hadn't - seeing the bill for four of these, she was impressed to note that they measure up in detail, size and beauty. Now, I'm delighted - but when Mrs NW is impressed with geocoins it's a banner day!

(Explanation: Mrs NW, a CPA, takes me along on her road trips to carry her luggage, arrange her local travel, and defend her honor in strange lands such as New Orleans, Las Vegas, Phoenix etc etc - and lets me go wild caching all day long on those road trips. Oh - and she allows me a budget for geocoins... I've never had to ask what my budget is - thanks in part to beauties like these!). Thanks Glen for a job well-done.

I'm going to put at least one into 'hand to hand' limited circulation - these deserve controlled exposure to the geocaching community as a whole, as long as the cacher is fit enough to hold it!

I am working on my first personal coin and have a delima going on. I know I want at least a 2" coin for my Gentle Giant. His name is Bud and there are many photos of him on caching adventures, many of my best times in the field were with Bud. Do I do the Gentle Giant on a two or three inch coin? I really like these 3 inch coins. I hate to distract from the uniqueness of the Initial Point though. Glen

My Gentle Giant, Bud with a fawn, he was really curious and really nice to the scared baby. You will find Bud photos scattered throughout the forums. Glen

will these be keeping the 1c icon or will they be getting their own?

Aaarrrggghhh!!!! No fair!

I still haven't seen the mailman limping on down the road with mine. <sniff>

I think we priced these in brass . . .

It appears that I missed that part of the discussion

Now you have me curious

If not brass, just what is the base metal of these coins ?

Posted

I think the base metal is zinc, just like the Geodetic Center Coins. A brass coin this size would be a hefty one indeed! I would have to check with Rusty to make sure. We talked about switching mints to get a brass coin and the cost was half again higher. Shipping was outrageous too. I sure wish a US mint would get involved with a quality product. Glen

Yeah, Glen, are you sold out? Maddy wants to circulate -- in the wild -- both of these, so I'm sure I'll never see them again. Was hoping maybe I could get one more to actually have on my desk. Maybe I'll send them overseas.

Posted

GLEN......help...no coins yet! And a package from the States send later than your "giant plates" did arrive two days ago. You sent the coins by Priority Mail at the first of Oktober. I keep my fingers crossed for the mail today, but after that :unsure:. I said earlier, I waited once a several weeks, but i want to see them LIFE

:) I got mine today and Jeez Louise they're huge. Awesome coins. Thanks Glen, Most excellent!!! :)

I wonder if that was the first or second set I sent to you? Anyway, I am glad you got them! Glen

They were post marked on Oct.10th so I'm guessing the second set.

Glen Could you please check your records for my order paypaled on 9-27 for one black nickel, one ant copper coin ? I have not recived them as of yet . Thanks

Posted

I'd go with the smaller coins. At some point these cease to be coins and become something else, I don't know what but they aren't coins. LOL

I say smaller too. But not smaller than 2". Though I am sure you will start seeing big 3" coins out there now that yours has been so popular.

Still waiting mine to arrive Finland. I hope you didin't use parcel post? Last time when someone used parcel posti I had to wait 2 and half month to receive it.

Maybe we have the same slowboat to Europe . No coins here either. I'll wait till Oct. 24 (20 days of mail delivery must be enough) and than they're c.m.w.p. (coins missing while posted :yikes:). Glen already reserved a second load of coins. It's a shame they're possible lost (but how?).

I shipped all overseas coin orders over two coins in a Priority Mailer, after paying almost 8 dollars to ship two to the UK. They went out Priority Mail. I would have expected them to have been there within five days. Not being a postal specialist and not familiar with shipping times to other countries, I do not know when they should have arrived. I shipped over 1000 coins prior to these and only lost one, an EBAY sale. I have been getting hammered on these for some reason and have replaced several orders. I have ordered some more coins as I had to borrow some back to cover some of these missing orders. I think I am getting a pretty clear view why overseas shipping is so high. I tried to insure some of these, 57 dollars for eight coins, I doubt either one of us wants to pay that. I have been trying to cover these orders reasonably. I surely did not plan on these types of problems or posts.

That being said, I ordered some antique nickel and a few antique silver coins to sell on EBAY, hoping to recover some of my losses. Glen

If it's any help, I safely received my coins a week ago (15th) here in the UK.

Since then I have taken one to an event and it seemed to be the most popular coin amongst the 20 or so new/rare coins that I took with me.

They are great coins, many thanks!

Glen,

A second possibility are the customs! If 4 coins are pretty heavy they may have the attention of a fanatic custom. In that case, I'll receive the coins after a while including extra taxes :yikes: . But we still keep our fingers crossed for a while. I appreciate your extra work and I'am sorry for your extra costs (not yet, but it looks like it :o ). And the most saddest thing of all, I cannot yet touch and feel those amazing coins  !

I received my coins (all 4) two weeks ago and that really amazed me because that means they arrived about a week after you send them.

The quickest delivery ever from the USA. (dId I already tell you they are GREAT?)
