+clearpath
I always thought the warning meter was an interesting feature. Some geocachers used it as a badge of honor. Others got very upset when their meter was spiked. If I remember correctly, we used to be able to see everyone's warning meter. Then, it was changed so that you could only see your own meter. Now, you can still be warned by a forum moderator but only they can see your warn meter. I wish we could all see 'The Meter'. So, fess up geocachers ... who has been or currently has their 'warning meter' spiked? What did you do that caused the spike? I'll go first ... I was on this forum for almost two years before my first disiplinary action. My meter was spiked because I accused someone of being a sock puppet. (Jeez, can't anyone take a joke anymore ...) Also, I'm pretty sure I got caught saying something distasteful once (and only once). Quote Link to comment

Seriously, if you do something naughty in this forum, then Moose Mob and the rest of his kin will send you a PM (Private Message) warning you to stop and, for good measure, they will tell you that your warning meter has been spiked (only they can see it). Keystone
Tough to miss something I never knew about. Ignorance is bliss. This is a brilliant and insightful statement. For 90-something percent of the forum community, warning meters are a non-issue. Yet, when they were visible for everyone to see, lots of people were obsessing about them. "Why do I have a warning meter?" "What did I do wrong?" Etc. etc. Once the forum settings got changed so that warn meters were hidden, the general angst level decreased. That is a good thing. As has been said, if you receive a formal warning, you will be notified about it via PM or e-mail from a moderator. If you follow the posted forum guidelines, that should never be an issue. +El Diablo
I got moderated for a week one time (they censor your posts before they allow them to go public.) for playing around in areas best left alone. KA warned me once about something but I can't remember what is was for, but I guess I deserved it. Although I did try to argue the point. All of this happened after they removed the meters, so I never got to see the spike. El Diablo Edited February 9, 2006 by El Diablo Quote Link to comment

Keystone
I rarely care to even look at how many caches people have found. I don't think I'd care about their angst-o-meter. To clarify, even when warning meters were visible, you could only see your own warning meter. (Moderators can see all of them, of course... that is the purpose of the warn meters.) This led to people obsessing over the fact that *they* had a meter and nobody else did. They thought they had done something wrong, even though the meter was at 0%. I did a quick search for old threads with the word "warn" or "meter" in the title. Lots of 'em. "The Meter of Shame" is a particular favorite. Quote Link to comment

I think I got it to register a couple of times, though. I'm probably better off without -- I don't think I could resist seeing how close I could play it without getting thumped. I waxed nostalgic, and called up Auntie's warning meter notes. I found this gem, which I wrote back in 2004: Your forum warning level has been reduced back to 0% by reason of extremely creative writing in defense of the moderators: "I swear, everybody acts like this is a support forum for Tourette's sufferers, and the moment the iron hand of moderation lifts, we'll all start yapping like dogs and screaming obscenities." Ya gotta love Auntie. Quote Link to comment

There is no need for the warn meter, you know what you typed or inserted was not acceptable. The forums even automatically check for curse words. The MODS are there to keep things and you on track. +AuntieWeasel
Yes, we should bring back CO Admin's Purple Pony Patrol. Getting your meter spiked wouldn't feel so bad if it came from a cute My Little Pony. Ohhhhh...I don't know about that. Hasbro came around to my school one year (1980, maybe?) to recruit staff (the toy industry blows through souls like you wouldn't believe), and their representative was all exercised about this new toy they were working on. See, they interviewed little girls and found out that what they all wanted, overwhelmingly, was a pony. So Hasbro made this crappy sparkly neon purple plastic thing that vaguely looked like a horse. He showed it to us proudly. "IDIOT!" I thought, "little girls want a PONY. Not this ugly polythene chunk o' poop." Went on to be the top-selling toy of all time or something. (Then in 1990, I read Tim Berners-Lee's RFC about creating a thing called the World Wide Web and thought, "Give away content for free? Ha! Tripping much?"). So, you know, being moderated by My Little Craven Marketing Tool stung a little. Quote Link to comment

We have been discussing whether it would be better to send these by e-mail rather than forum PM. The forum PM has the benefit of being more immediate, but that assumes that the reader opens it. To be sure you learn about new private messages, you can have a notification box pop up on your forum screen whenever you receive a new one. In your Control Panel, under "Options" ==> "Board Settings," make sure that "Yes" is selected to the question, "Do you wish to get a board notification when you get a new personal message?" Also, be sure to make forums.Groundspeak.com an allowed site for any popup blocker software you are using. Quote Link to comment
