  1. Has anyone attempted notifying the police of cache locations so they don't waste their time and our money blowing up a box full of McToys, Whoopee cushions, and slinkys? Or is this something that isn't done because the police dept. wouldn't approve without all sorts of permission forms, etc. Or would they not have a central location to keep all the info organized (aside from Geocaching.com) even if they did have it? Are most police depts. aware of Geocaching? Just wondering... bblake
  2. Wait... according to Google you can find exactly what you want on eBay!
  3. Now that would take all the fun out of it. There's nothing like getting some strange ... photos! For some really interesting photos, you could put this near a cache...
  4. No, that would fall into the "other undesirable spyware/malware/etc." category I mentioned. There are in fact batch viruses -- a list of them can be found here: http://www.viruslist.com/en/virusesdescrib...apter=153313914 The image file virus types I have read about require the user to view or even preview the image before any malicious code would be executed. With the WMF type you could simply view a page that has WMF images on it with IE or Firefox (Firefox reportedly asks if you want to run the code) and it will execute the code. The one I have seen mentioned that infects jpegs actually requires a special viewer to extract the code, otherwise the infected files would be virtually harmless. There's more info about this subject here. Certainly we should all be careful when dealing with any files of unknown origin, whether discovered on a CD in a cache or downloaded from somewhere. If I do find a CD or other media in a cache, curiousity might just kill this cat.
  5. Since this is not allowed but it sounds like you want to combine your geocaching efforts with supporting them, maybe you could pick up or create some swag for trade items that supports their cause, like hats, t-shirts, pins, patches, bumper stickers, that sort of thing. I don't think this is the best venue for supporting anything like that, but that would be one way to combine the two. Also maybe include some info about them or why you're doing it. If somebody comes along and doesn't like it they don't have to take it.
  6. The Kodak Easyshare camera series is nice since the docking station recharges the battery and simplifies the process of transferring the pictures, and while you can simply point-and-shoot, there are many settings to play with if you want more later. I don't care for the Kodak software though -- better to use the built-in features of Windows XP for transferring photos, or something like Photoshop. The first digital camera we had was a Sony Mavica that was bulky and used 3.5" floppies, then a Sony Cybershot which was much smaller but used the more expensive Sony media, and now we use the Kodak LS753 with a docking station, and Adobe Photoshop 4.0 for transferring the photos. Photoshop has a nice feature of auto-fixing red-eye during the transfer process. There are some Kodaks that use either a rechargeable battery or AAs, which would be nice if you're on an extended trip with no access to a charger. I don't know that any of them are waterproof, but with care and a nice waterproof camera case you should be OK unless you plan on taking pictures in a downpour.
  7. They're not Mctoys, but perhaps viewed with equal contempt: golf balls, particularly used ones, especially when chopped up by a lawnmower. However, I found a cool golf ball I may have to drop in a cache, though. It's "unputtable"; when you roll it across the floor it goes in all different directions. Must have a weight inside of it, or maybe a really ticked off Mexican jumping bean? Anyway, it looks just like a regular golf ball so someone may pass it up.
  8. Oh don't worry -- they are still going strong. My dd has Twinkle Twirl, Sparkle Works, Orange Blossom, Toola Roola, Sky Wishes, etc., etc., etc...... not to mention the movies, playsets... I saw a funny website once that had a quiz where you had to guess from a list of names which ones were My Little Pony names and which ones were porn star names (like Cherry Treats, Chocolate Delight, etc.) Ah, there it is, but I won't post the link -- might get my measure meter spiked, and that sure sounds painlful.
  9. OK ... I can understand some of the reasons for not logging online, I guess. Doesn't quite make sense if someone was so paranoid that they were afraid to log online but they're OK finding the cache, which could potentially have someone hiding in the bushes watching it and ready to shoot them in the butt with an elephant tranquilizer, could literally have anything in it, could have cameras on it, could have a bear trap hidden in the leaves next to it, could have all the contents sprayed with pepper spray or other undesirable substance, could have a bug hidden inside one of the items, could have illegal drugs hidden in it with the police watching it waiting for who was coming to pick them up, uh... oh, sorry if I just made the paranoid cachers even more paranoid! Anyway, I was just curious about why some wouldn't log their finds online and I appreciate all the responses. I know its not required and its not the point (to some), but to me it seems like it would be the same as giving someone a nice Christmas present and not having the chance to see them open it or hear how they liked it. Again, that's not the point of that custom either, though -- just they way I enjoy it. Well, I'm out of town and its time to see what kind of caches we have around here -- looks like quite a few!
  10. I was surfing through posts and noticed someone saying they have found hundreds but only bothered to log a few. I consider the logging to be what you are giving back to the owner of the cache for their time -- letting them know about your experience. The post was in a locked thread. Considering the already obvious shadiness of the poster, is this A> a troll, B> just a simple lie, or C> something that people do all the time, finding 'hundreds' of caches but not logging them. Just curious... if someone found my cache I would want them to post a log about their experience, hopefully something more interesting than TNLN.
  11. I use an RAA-3 External amplifying antenna on my Lowrance for some caches, the units internal antenna does well under tree cover (Much better than my Garmin) but with the external antenna....leaves? trees? what are you talking about? You'd never know they were there. Cool ... so it does make a difference. Too bad we can't use one on the Legend C. Maybe if we take a roll of foil and make some 'rabbit ears' ...
  12. That's what it says in the manual on mine ... no ext. antenna. By the way, would it make any difference as long as you had line of sight to the sky? I thought they were just for when using it in a car... ? Haven't really considered it since the only time I lose signal is when I put it in my pocket or I'm under a lot of trees.
  13. I tried ACME invisible paint, but got it all over my gpsr and couldn't see how to get to the cache!
  14. Huh? [edited to close the rift I just created in the space-time continuum thingy]
  15. Just for fun I hid a cache in the woods near my house and let my 4-yr-old daughter hunt for it after entering the waypoint for her in the gprs. Took a bit of work to keep her looking where she was going instead of at the screen all the time, but she had a great time. Something fun to do when you want them to get used to the idea and learn how to use the gpsr (sort of)...
  16. Is 'Big Mac' a metaphor ? Wait ... don't answer. Not sure I want to know ... And don't forget the "special sauce"... Now repeat after me: "I will be *sensitive* to your needs..." Sent... suh... tiv... Major Payne
  17. There's plenty of info about various types on antivirus websites, try the glossary on this site: http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp For example, here's a .bat file that will delete the entire contents of your hard drive as soon as you run it (this has been confirmed by AOL) : C:\ECHO "Of course I'm not going to post that!!!" C:\ECHO "Only Geraldo would do something like that." (edited: typo)
  18. What's the breast best site that will take a word and show you all the possible combinations of the letters?
  19. Are you sure it isn't time for a "colourful metaphor"?
  20. Don't know about the solar powered or motion detector, but Wal-Mart sells this MP3 Player / FM transmitter that you plug in your cig lighter in the car and tune your radio to one of several FM stations. It uses the USB flash drives so you could put an MP3 of your recording on it. You could hook that up directly to a 12V battery and leave it running... Finding a 12V solar-recharging battery wouldn't be so hard but if its for a cache how would you hide the solar panel(s)? What about running the power wire to a 12V car battery? Don't have any idea how long it would last though. And then the motion detector part... with the MP3 Player/FM transmitter I'm referring to, if it loses power you have to hit play again for it to start, so that wouldn't work. And also I'm not sure it loops the MP3(s) or stops after playing them all. Also not sure of the range on the FM transmitter... Well, I thought I had something. False alarm!
  21. I bought these fake rocks on eBay... mua ha ha ha haaaaaa There are lots of "key hider" things on eBay that would be great. Saw one that looked just like bottled water, you could even put water in it... how would that be for CITO? Or to put in a cache so someone might pass it up... Sorry if I'm not posting images correctly -- I'm new!
  22. Ah... abstinence then? I have also been in IT since before it was called IT. I'm not saying you should go pick up a CD from under a log in a forest in the Netherlands that was left by some guy named "Jan de Wit" and put it in the machine running the EMR server at the hospital, I'm just saying hey, maybe we should lighten up a bit on the "viruses on CDs placed in caches" scare thing. I'd personally love to find a CD or a media card, something like that in a cache, that someone loaded with shareware, MP3s (all freely distributable, of course ), pictures they've taken, etc. So everyone stop burning MP3 CDs for a minute and put together something for your next trade!
  23. Yeah, I thought they were able to find it and re-attach it. Looks like it must have been there a while!
