  1. I'm surprised this thread hasn't generated more discussion. This Augmented Reality (AR) game (Ingress) touches on some of aspects of Geocaching. Get people out to see sights Game involving the use of a GPS Mapping Available world wide Many of the game landmarks overlap geocaches. Do any of you see the sport of geocaching moving to this direction, where caches are virtual in an AR? That is would really allow the sport to really leave no trace. I would also argue that virtual caches in this world would some aspects of the thrill of the hunt.
  2. For me, I prefer something with Vibram soles and Gortex. These tend to be a bit more expensive, but I like being comfortable walking on any terrain and I don't have to worry about getting water inside my boots when crossing a stream - these tend to be a bit heavier. If you are going to go this route, get a good pair of wool or think synthetic wool socks, if you plan on doing serious hiking or going out into the snow. And take your think wool socks with you when you try your boots on, it will make a difference. Merrells are generally good and I would recommend them. If you're not planning on any serious hiking, then get a pair of light boots that are comfortable, with a good pair of soles and you're set!
  3. First time I heard about geocaching.... I had seen a snippet on a cable show on TechTV with Leo Laporte. A few weeks later I told a friend about who had also recently heard about it before me. He bought a GPS online and a bunch of us went out on a lunch break to find a geocache... a few weeks later I bought my GPS and we've been hooked.
  4. Nice of you to ask, honestly I don't see a problem with it. As many of alluded you may have a problem with muggles that may mess with your cache thinking it is a real snake. I've seen other cache containers that look much more scarier unintentionally. How many cache containers have you come across that look like a pipe bomb? Go for it! The worse thing that can happen is someone may need to clean their shorts if you scare them bad enough!
  5. Moth flakes? Are these anything like moth balls? If so, keep in mind moth balls and plastics don't do well, the plastics don't do well together - moth balls tend to melt plastics.
  6. Schedule a geocache event nearby the cache That will most certainly keep the baboons away and and not thwart Geocahers!

  8. I started out with a Garmin Rhino (green) and returned after using it for a week. The menus were okay, but my main gripe with it was whenever I used it near the LAX airport, the Rhino would just lock and be totally useless. I suspect it doesn't do well near certain RF areas, because another cacher with the same model experienced the same problems. I borrowed a friend's Meridian (Green) and a week later bought my own. That GPS I used for a couple of years before upgrading to a Meridian Gold so I could the Direct Routing software. Two years ago, I found myself looking for a new GPS (the Gold took a dive off the side of a mountain), and I now use a eXplorer 400. My co-worker whom I cache with owns a Garmin V+ (it's an older model on par with my old Meridian Gold). He and I compare notes and there are a couple of items he likes about the Magellan mapping software that he wishes was available for his Garmin mapping software. Customizable regions. With Magellan, Mapsource software you can draw out a rectangular region and load it into an SD Card. With Garmin's Mapsend, you load the regions they set for you... and if your area of interest is on the edge you may end up having to load multiple regions - a common problem for those living in a crowded metropolitan area. Nowadays this isn't much of a problem, if your GPS supports the use of a large enough memory card to store your detailed maps. Quite honestly, don't get caught up in the whole Garmin vs Magellan. Choose the unit that you are the most comfortable with. If you get a chance, borrow one from your friend and try it out. If this isn't possible, go to one of the Geocacher events in your area and ask to see and try the GPS out. The people at these events would love to show you their GPS. Go though the menus and use the features you would use to find/program a waypoint/cache.
  9. I wonder how long it would be for someone who finds the cache comes to the conclusion that the cache is "misplaced" and tries cramming the cache into the fence post believe it was misplaced!
  10. A lot of wonderful looking rocks caches in the pictures. The only problem I can see from using foam/latex rocks is how long they will last in the outdoors. Hollowing out real rocks would be a chore, but IMO it is well worth the effort rather than trying to duplicate something nature has done so well already.
  11. Animal Encounters with mentioning while caching... snakes cougar deer black bear Does a crazed homeless man count?
  12. I stepped on something like that once, it took me a while to clean it off.
  13. Any submerged cache will undoubtedly require additional attention/maintenance. Each time the cache is retrieved a small amount of water will find it's way inside the container. Repeated opening an closing will also wear out any seals on the ammo box and any contents may get mold/mildew. I would insert another container inside the ammo box like a decent tupperware and request that cachers tell you if the ammo box seals are failing.
  14. You should have nothing to be ashamed about. You did your work and should gladly claim the bragging rights to your 11 FTF. YAY! Now if you really want to savor your victory, I suggest holding off on posting your FTFs for about 24 hours, so that other finders of the cache can have their FTF hopes dashed to bits when find the cache to see your name displayed prominantly above all others! By all means revisit any cache you wish. I personally make a note of my favorite caches so that I can drop travel bugs, because I believe good caches deserve special attention.
  15. Nope, not confused about the picture at all. From what I can see there metal cap set on each end. The threads clearly have some rust with some yellow stuff (some kind of sealer or gasket goop). Take a closer look, if you still think it is PVC, get your eyes checked!
  16. You most certainly are allowed to request cachers to use/bring a screwdriver. As others have mentioned, state it clearly in your cache description. The only real gripers will be those who fail to read your instructions clearly (tough toenails to them). I've come across such a cache before. The container used a hose clamps, it really needed it. The cache was located under some rocks on the shoreline of the Pacific Ocean. The cache hider got around this problem of needing a screwdriver by buying hose clamps that used a wingnut attached to where the screw would normally be. I've never seen such a hose clamp before, but it is a suggestion to consider if you can find such a beast.
  17. Good to hear that all has gone well. Hopefully this will be a good lesson to these kids.
  18. Who actually owns the license plates? Does the providence/government own the actual plates or does the owner of the car? Here in the USA, the plates are owned by the DMV. In some cases plate owners can be fined for not turning their plates in.
  19. I understand your position and agree... now how about telling me all the WRONG answers?
  20. Have you considered going to the library? Borrowing the book would be much more preferable than buying.
  21. Track logs are interchangable provided you have the right program. Last year I lost my GPS doing a popular hike. I asked someone to send me their track log and they sent me their track log from their Garmin. I was able to read it using g7towin then read the information back into my spare MeriGreen. There are other programs that will do the same thing I'm sure. But I like to use g7towin because I can edit trackpoints.
  22. A coworker and I found such a cache an hour ago. I HATE THEM!
  23. A few lines... would be annoying, but SIXTEEN? I'd be a more than annoyed. Normally I'd drop it and just chalk it up to the guy is a jerk. But the way the guy's dimissive behavior, I'd delete his find and simply tell him "It's just a game".
