Will+Bill Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 --This message was sent through the Geocaching.com web site-- Hello Will+Bill, I am pretty new in Geocaching, but I find it very exciting, especially because it is so international. I've already talked to some Geocachers in Oregon and I thought it would great to be able to learn more about the game and Geocachers in general from all over the world, which is only possible through the Internet. As part of a school project (ethnography writing assignment to be more specific), I am doing a survey about people involved in Geocashing. I thank you for taking the time to answer my questionnaire. 1. How old are you? ___________ 2. Are you: Male___ Female___? Single___ Married___ Divorced___? 3. Where are you from? __________ 4. What is your highest degree of education? _______________________________ 5. What is your occupation? _____________________________________________ 6. How long have you worked at this job for? _______________________________ 7. Do you have any kids? ________If so, how many and how old are they? _______ ______________________Do they also play with you? ________________________ 8. How long have you been playing Geocaching? __________ 9. How often do you take part in this game? _______________ 10. How did you first find out about it? ______________ 11. Do you own a GPS system? ____________How much did you pay for it? ______ 12. What has been the greatest prize you found so far? __________ 13. Do you like challenges? ____ 14. What kind of movies do you like best? _________________ ------------------------------------------------------------ Forward abuse complaints to: contact@geocaching.com It seems weird that we live in Carmel, Indiana, and this Geocacher lives in Oregon. I don't mind getting the e-mail, but I am wondering how she found us. Quote
TotemLake Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Clicking on your profile and sending e-mail through geocaching.com as the hint at the bottom provided. This always included at the bottom of e-mail forwarded to you through the service. You would be advised to send your complaint to contact@geocaching.com and advise them of the unsolicited survey with the username of the person that sent it to you. Quote
Will+Bill Posted May 31, 2004 Author Posted May 31, 2004 I am not complaining, just wondering why they chose me. Thanks anyway. Quote
Quadcache Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 It seems to me that there is a lot of information being asked that would help someone out that is trying to steal your ID. It almost happened to me! (not from here though). I would send an email to the contact address just to let them know this is going on even if you do not "complain" about it. Yes, I can be over paranoid sometimes but better safe than sorry. My two cents. Quote

Riddlers Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 (edited) I never got one of those and I'm from Oregon. maybe they just like your avitar Edited May 31, 2004 by Riddlers Quote
Navdog Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 I also recieved one of those a week ago. Odd questions. Never replied Quote
Mopar Posted May 31, 2004 Posted May 31, 2004 Sounds like gathering info for commercial purposes, not just personal curiosity, so I would think it needs to have approval from TPTB. Since Jeremy and company have been fanatical about protecting the users privacy, I can't imagine that permission being granted. Quote
Will+Bill Posted June 1, 2004 Author Posted June 1, 2004 If anyone is interested, the user name was "vanou" Quote
Will+Bill Posted June 1, 2004 Author Posted June 1, 2004 Interesting, there were no finds on the account. Quote
uperdooper Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 Interesting, there were no finds on the account. i would definitely report the e-mail as abuse. the questions are too personal. Quote

southdeltan Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 Interesting, there were no finds on the account. I'm not surprised. I saw this thread after filling out a survey on Yahoo about political adds. The net is (and has been for a while) going to hell in a handbasket. southdeltan Quote
Riddlers Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 since it had to go through geocaching, won't they have a record of who sent it? Quote
Navdog Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 I also recieved one of those a week ago. Odd questions. Never replied Were they the same as the ones on mine? It looks like it. The other reason I didn't reply was that the return email address was vanou@yahoo.fr or something like that. Quote
Will+Bill Posted June 1, 2004 Author Posted June 1, 2004 Same reply address on mine. .fr???? Does that mean that it was from France??? Whoever it was said that they were from Oregon. Quote
Will+Bill Posted June 1, 2004 Author Posted June 1, 2004 This might sound stupid, but is there any way to see a profile without looking up cache finds by a user? Quote
Will+Bill Posted June 1, 2004 Author Posted June 1, 2004 vanou Thanks. Look at the location. Hotel??????? Quote
IV_Warrior Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 I like the "New to geoCASHing" part....yep reading that "survey" it does sound like he's trying to cash in on our sport/fellow cachers...... Quote
tstar Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 Very weird survey. Vanou is a French name. and the .fr is for a french email. I doubt it is someone from Oregon, unless it is a French person in Oregon for some reason...work, foreign exchange student. Kinda scary though. The different type of questions just don't make sense. Eh bien, c'est bizarre! Quote
Gizmo & Brazin Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 Will+Bill, You said you had already replied to the message. As noted earlier, question #22 goes WAY beyond any info I would share with anyone. Give out your PIN number? I hope you didn't pass out this information. If for some reason you did, might I suggest you contact the bank and change it immediately? I can't think of any good that could come from sharing that type of information. Quote
Jeremy Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 I banned the account and emailed everyone who received this survey to ask them not to respond to it. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. Quote

Team Flying Dachshund Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 Somebody needs to find this person before there are more incidents like this. Did he just send it in bulk or did he send it to every person individualy? Think they might have found the oregon geocaching yahoo group (or similar if it exists?) adn just looked up all the members adn sent it to them? Quote
GPSKitty Posted June 1, 2004 Posted June 1, 2004 Think they might have found the oregon geocaching yahoo group (or similar if it exists?) adn just looked up all the members adn sent it to them? If you look at the last paragraph of the original post, he doesn't live in Oregon. And I don't think it is possible to send bulk email through gc.com. I believe he had to send each one individually. And when you get the first spam, be sure to click the "remove" link so they can put your address on the "verified" list. SPAM SUCKS! Quote
