I am pretty new in Geocaching, but I find it very exciting, especially because it is so international. I've already talked to some Geocachers in Oregon and I thought it would great to be able to learn more about the game and Geocachers in general from all over the world, which is only possible through the Internet. As part of a school project (ethnography writing assignment to be more specific), I am doing a survey about people involved in Geocashing. I thank you for taking the time to answer my questionnaire.

It seems weird that we live in Carmel, Indiana, and this Geocacher lives in Oregon. I don't mind getting the e-mail, but I am wondering how she found us.

Clicking on your profile and sending e-mail through geocaching.com as the hint at the bottom provided. This always included at the bottom of e-mail forwarded to you through the service. You would be advised to send your complaint to contact@geocaching.com and advise them of the unsolicited survey with the username of the person that sent it to you.

It seems to me that there is a lot of information being asked that would help someone out that is trying to steal your ID. It almost happened to me! (not from here though).

I would send an email to the contact address just to let them know this is going on even if you do not "complain" about it.

Yes, I can be over paranoid sometimes but better safe than sorry.

It seems to me that there is a lot of information being asked that would help someone out that is trying to steal your ID. It almost happened to me! (not from here though).

Sounds like gathering info for commercial purposes, not just personal curiosity, so I would think it needs to have approval from TPTB. Since Jeremy and company have been fanatical about protecting the users privacy, I can't imagine that permission being granted.

It looks like it. The other reason I didn't reply was that the return email address was vanou@yahoo.fr or something like that.

Very weird survey.

Vanou is a French name. and the .fr is for a french email. I doubt it is someone from Oregon, unless it is a French person in Oregon for some reason...work, foreign exchange student. Kinda scary though. The different type of questions just don't make sense. Eh bien, c'est bizarre!

Will+Bill, You said you had already replied to the message. As noted earlier, question #22 goes WAY beyond any info I would share with anyone. Give out your PIN number? I hope you didn't pass out this information. If for some reason you did, might I suggest you contact the bank and change it immediately? I can't think of any good that could come from sharing that type of information.

Somebody needs to find this person before there are more incidents like this. Did he just send it in bulk or did he send it to every person individualy? Think they might have found the oregon geocaching yahoo group (or similar if it exists?) adn just looked up all the members adn sent it to them?

If you look at the last paragraph of the original post, he doesn't live in Oregon.

And I don't think it is possible to send bulk email through gc.com. I believe he had to send each one individually.

Well, if anyone replied to that "survey", even in jest. You can bet your bottom dollar THEY are on all the spam lists in the world NOW.

And when you get the first spam, be sure to click the "remove" link so they can put your address on the "verified" list.
