D-Jollymon,

We are all so very grateful that you and hopefully your adventurous sidekick are able to write about your frightening experience. It's good to know that both of you are already getting better and feeling better.

I'll second that motion! Glad you guys are OK!

I'll guarantee that you guys won't do that again....just like I won't ride a skateboard down a really long steep hill again... :(

Hey, you got photos of that accident?

Nope...just a chip on the top of my right hip bone and some bad dreams for a couple of weeks. My hip looked like DJs _$$. I didn't get any sympathy because they all said I was stupid for trying it. No $__t, like I didn't know that already! Just like those guys I only envisioned a positive outcome to my daring stunt....

Yep not a good week.

1. Nearly lost my life, got ten stitches and a busted up body....long story

2. Got axed from the Yrium UDesignit Card selection....long story

3. Got laid off today due to a major corporate re-org....another long story

This sucks.

Wow PW, that does suck. I hope you have a fast recovery and find employemnt quickly.

Sorry to hear that too PW. Jobs aren't nearly as secure as they used to be. The corporate ax will fall at the end of the month for us. Hopefully it will miss me but I'm not sure this time....The good news is that with rising home prices in San Diego many businesses are having a hard time finding talent. Nobody can afford to move here. So you may be able to find something relatively quickly. Good Luck!

Aw crap! Now I'll never get that image out of my head!  :(

After looking at that, I had to immediately look at another image that RocketMan sent me yesterday to re-burn the memory cells in my brain with a much better image! ;)

Send me the picture! Quick!

I sent it to you....now post that one on your profile page! :(

The Simpsons will never be quite the same! :(

DOH!

That is a very scary story indeed. I am glad you guys made it through to tell the tale. The one thing I didn't get from you story is how PW ended up in the flow. Your story left him on the "square area". I hope you have a fast recovery also. BTW: That picture is awful. RM

I talked with PW for a while today, and asked him the same question.

He said when DJ slipped, PW saw him go down, and once his flashlight was out of sight, he couldn't see anything else. He tried to turn around, lost his footing, and the rest is history.

He didn't share the rest of his journey, and as we were talking, he was trying to decide if he was going to read DJ's account here, or put it off until later...

After reading D-Jollymon's account, I'm glad I was sick over the weekend. I had thought about heading out there for the FTF.

Hope your wounds heal quickly; and I'm not referring to the physical ones.

Wow, it is hard to believe the two of you got away with as few injuries as you did!

Glad you're OK as you can be and quick recovery wishes for the both of you.

I can't tell you how many times I have banged my head, albeit purposly, on the nearest object while doing a Dan-oh cache! ;)

Repeating over and over as I bang my head, "This cache is going to be the end of me!" ;)

This puts things into perspective... :P

Now that really is one bad week! Whatever you need, don't hesitate to ask. I'm sure it is the least of your worries, but if it is any consolation, I'm sure your name will come up shortly in the YMS series. If getwetsd wasn't so new to the game he probably would have given it more thought given the particular circumstances of the Ghost mishap before following Parsa's lead in nominating dhsundance both on the Ghost page and the Udesignit TB page. Dave is certainly overdue for a card, so #27 is his and the design is well in the works. But it won't be long, I'm sure, before a PW nomination is made....

Has anyone had a cache archived before it got approved because the word trespass was in the description? Can an admin unarchive the cache page, or do I have to create a new one? Hate to relocate it a second time. The first time another cache was approved before mine that was 80 feet away.. funny.

Edit:

btw, you would not be trespassing to access the cache. I just mentioned something about it and whammo, archived.

Back to an older topic we have discussed here, MSN has an article online reviewing the new Toyota FJ Cruiser. You can see the article HERE.

It says it will be priced in the mid-$20K range, which sounds very competive with the other similar vehicles out there!

Drool, Drool... ;)

Yeah, I saw that. They took one out on the Rubicon in stock configuraton which is impresive. They said it didn't even lose a mudflap. Here are some photos from the Toyota site:

Approvers can un-archive caches, not the hiders. Email the approver and explain the situation, its always the best bet. I know both our local approvers and they are reasonable, normal people. Communicate with 'em.

Actually, truth be told, it does pay well. A good friend of mine is in charge of all the stunts on the CSI series. They do a lot of locaton work, and have a blast doing it. (He even gets in some of the shots as a background person!)

Hey Jason and Dave...

I was just browsing through the groudspeak store and found something you need to get. I wish I had seen this last week! ;)

New item on PW and D-J's necessary equipment list!

(Before anyone gets upset, I have been talking with Jason frequently, and I fully realize the seriousness of the situation. However, Jason does recognize that there is some inherent humor in the situation since the scars, both physical and mental will eventually heal!)

Love ya guys!

So PW & Trailgators, what field (work) are you in? So let's all network! ;)

We got to the creek and it was roaring down the hill as the water hit the rocks that were cemented into the wash to slow the flow down.

I just got an email from PW with a link to some pictures of his injuries. I won't post the link, since I'm not sure if he meant for them to go public.

However, I do have a few comments... :P

1- Both of these boys are from Minnesota...I have never seen anyone carry "Purple Pride" to this extreme! ;)

2- I think D-J has the better a@#, but who am I to say... :(

3- If it wasn't for the 8" gash on PW's shin, when I saw his ankles, I thought he was retaining water! ;)

Hey DJ, don't you know that's destruction of Gov't property??? Better not let your commander see that! :(

The family that caches together...

Ladies and Gentleman, would you please be upstanding for the newest San Diego geocacher.....Tiffette#2.

2b3d6ebf-0ce5-4c3f-a19b-370012d75319.jpg

So Murphy and I are putting our geoswag on this morning when Tiff's second daughter comes out.

Can I go geocaching with you?  I'd like to learn how to place caches too.  May I also have my own account?

Whipped out the second Garmin Rhino before she could change her mind and bundled her out the door. Hit the Santee area today where she scored her first unassisted find. Was at home tonight showing her how to log when she wrote something I didn't understand.

On Belay

"Ahh honey, what's IRBT."

"I Rock Big Time." ;)

Wow, that's a tough first-cache for your little bundle of joy. As I recall the coord's for that container are way off the mark. Hope she didn't get too many weeds in her cozy little blanky.

We'll be looking for a baby picture.

Congratulations and cheers for cegrube who ran 18 miles to get a FTF on my new caches off the Palomar Divide Road (on the Barker Valley Trail). The gate on the CA79 was locked, so he put on his running shoes and ran to all the caches up there. If you want to go, I suggest calling the rangers to see if the gate is open! Perhaps the gate was closed due to the winds and low humidity... not sure. One nice development is that the High Point Trail down into Aguanga and Temecula has been well graded and is nice and smooth--wider with no bumps or rocks at all.

Barker Valley and the trail to it is a great place for a few more caches. dhsundance and I have placed three on the trail so far.

The bruises on his avatar are an understatement. He looks and feels like he's been in a car accident. I don't think he'll be able to walk normal for two weeks and he's gonna have a wicked scar on his shin. He had to drive my mom-mobile to work today because he can't use his left leg to shift his manual truck without crying. You can definitely tell when his pain meds are wearing off. He was up 1.5 hours in the middle of the night waiting for the new dose to kick in so he could get back to sleep.

I told him if he ever does anthing this stupid again, I'm going to have to clip his wings. I think this lesson may actually sink in this time.

D-Jollymon has a pain in the arse too, but I'll let him post his own pix. :D

TMI! But looks like some serious pain!

How far did you guys travel backwards or down?

Gory details dang it!

We got to the creek and it was roaring down the hill as the water hit the rocks that were cemented into the wash to slow the flow down. We couldn't cross because of the force of the water so we crossed above the entrance and came down the other side where we could wade to the tunnel as the water was slower. Once inside it was slow going as we were walking as high on the right side as we could without slipping. My left foot would be a bit lower than the right to provide stability on during the walk up. We came to the first area that had side tunnels dumping water into the main one. The water was coming in with such a rush that we had to jump across the fast moving water in the tunnel to get by the incoming side rush. This happened every side spot we hit.

We got all the way up to the area where we were to go up the side entrance and the flow was VERY heavy now and seemed to be getting worse. I waded across the massive flow and PW jumped and made it up to the square area. I didn't want some of the electronics I had in my jacket pocket to get wet so I put them in my backpack as I waited in the center rush of the water.

All of a sudden both of my feet began to slip, ever so slightly. I tried to bear down and get a better grip somehow but I started to slide even more. I was trying to slide/walk to the side and get up on the wall but it was to late. The creek had me and there was nothing I could do. I fell into the water with my GPSr and digital camera in my Gortex rain jacket and my backpack over one shoulder. I tried to put the backpack on but it was useless. I had my headlamp on me and my 1million candlelight flashlight in my hand as I sped down the 2-3 feet deep ride of terror. Every side tunnel I passed I had to hold my breath as massive amounts of water were spewing into the tunnel. I lost my headlamp and let go of the big flashlight so I could try and grab something. The lights floated down ahead of me...illuminating my watery nightmare. I choked on the water coming from the sides and tried to see what was coming up. I sped through the 1/4 mile of tunnel quickly and was thinking I could try and stop at the end.

I saw the entrance getting bigger and bigger.

The rocks came quickly as I exited the tunnel. I don't remember much of the last deadly 200 yards. This is where we should have been knocked unconcious. I can't get to sleep at night because I think of what could have happened. The rocks flipped me but somehow I managed to keep my head from hitting them. My breath was knocked out and I wondered how long it would be until I felt one of my extremities break. The rocks stopped making impact with my body as I go to the bottom of the creek where it was deeper. I couldn't move my legs in the deeper water so I used my arms to swim to the reeds that lined the stream. Barely able to grip the plants, I managed to pull my self up on the floating debris and crawl over to the cement side. Laying there in so much pain I could barley move. I had no idea where PW was but as I looked up he was 10 yards away with a bloody nose and laying on the ground as I was. He had a nasty slice in his shin.

I tried to move my arms and legs. The arms were fine but my hands/fingers were cramped/frozen from trying to stop myself in the tunnel.

We exited the creek where the fence ends and slowly made our way up the hill. PW had lost a boot, I had lost my backpack with wallet, Palm, TB's, other flashlight, keys to truck and my shorts. I could barely move up the hill in my boxers.

PW gave me a ride home in the back of his Xterra as I was wet and couldn't sit down. I just rolled myself into a ball to try to keep warm and ward off the shivers.

I went to the Emergency Room that night and passed out in the waiting area. Finally got to see the doc just before midnight. He gave me some med's for the night. Went back to the hospital the next morning and got my Tetnus shot and more meds.

Not a fun time for me....or PW.

I just want to thank everyone for their support over the unfortunate incident both myself and D-Jollymon went through on Monday. I’m finally coming around and I’m beginning to understand what had happened and what could have happened to both of us. The wounds are healing slowly and I’ve mentally come to terms on how crazy and addicting this sport can be, sometimes (at least in our case) overpowering common sense. I really appreciate the closeness that the San Diego Geocachers have to each other, whether your 8 or 80 we all have a common interest and support each other….it really means a lot to those of us who may not have family in SoCal…your our family.

As far as the next move in my career path I’m not completely sure what will come next. The layoff was expected and not much of a surprise to me, though bad timing considering the events of the week. Five years is a long time to last in Biotech at one company and doing research and development for natural products is unheard of for that duration.....hey at least I have 3 months of paid geocaching!

As the wiseman (Harmon) said "Experience is the name we give to our mistakes."

Thank you for all the laughs and I’ll see you on the trail soon!!

They got kick out of some of the names of the caches, they sound like they are very interested so watch for them on the trails!

I heard it too. All I could think was "Thank goodness Duncan had already changed his name from douche-bag!"

There's a Geo Event further north tomorrow

GCRC2D

I have a Tb in the Pennsylvania Geocahcers race. There are 8 pages of travel bugs at this event, but only 13 for the race.

Anyone local know any of the people attending....I figure the further lead I can get whilst still in California, the more space I have for it to get whittled down the closer they get towards Pennsylvania.

... 'cause there's more to it.

Is that the Marianass trench??

:D:P^_^

Yeah, I dated Mariana back in he seventies. After an evening with Mariana I had to spend an hour or two in a decompression chamber.

That girls made my ears pop. Hootah!

One thing for sure, you Brit's have a way with words.

PassingWind

PS. Get well Dave!!

PassingWind said it all.

I want to thank everyone that was kind enough to drop me a line and see how I was doing. Your thoughts and prayers have helped me through this. My butt is still beat the heck up...as you can see on my profile. :P

I often think of what happened and I realize how lucky I am.

I'm glad that all seriousness has been set aside in the thread so we can get back to normal!! ^_^

sheesh. :D

Thanks again everyone!!!

One thing about you two Flush Brothers, at least you're not boring. I'll rate you a five-star for that alone. It's good to have you back in the real word.

Ain't it nice that y'all didn't die?

Now just so's y' don't forget this near-miss your penance is to take over cleaning the toilet for your sweet bride. Each time you scrub that porcelain fixture be reminded of your close call.
