+SwineFlew
COOS BAY — Four geocachers found a body floating face down about a quarter mile from the North Spit Overlook about 3:30 p.m. today. The Coos County Sheriff’s office recovered the badly decomposed body around 6:30 tonight and are taking it to the medical examiner's office for further investigation. The name and gender weren't released, and it could not be learned for how long the body had been floating. Coos County Search and Rescue members were looking for Wyman “Wade” Weathersby, 59, of North Bend, in early February after Weathersby went missing. He was last seen leaving his home to go for a walk on the beach. Weathersby’s 1997 Acura Integra was found at the Bureau of Land Management’s Weyerhaeuser Overlook on the North Spit. It is unclear whether Weathersby’s disappearance and the recovered body are connected. Daren Drops discovered the body during a geocache outing with three friends. Drops was looking for a “cache” when he saw the body floating face down in open water. “I thought it was a propane tank floating,” he said. “When I got closer I realized it wasn’t.” Drops and his friends said they could not tell if the body was male or female. They did say the person was wearing blue jeans, sneakers and a T-shirt. The link The body was discovered by Bad Duck, he does come in here time to time. The cache log Quote Link to comment
+Max and 99
One of my biggest fears: I'll find a body while out geocaching in the middle of nowhere! So sorry that someone's loved one was found under those circumstances. Quote Link to comment
Mr.Yuck
Meh. Juicepig from Central Ontario has been there, done that a couple years ago. I suppose I'll have to look that one up now? Just kidding, don't mean to make light of the situation. It definitely can, and has happened to Geocachers. Quote Link to comment

4wheelin_fool
What an ironic cache name. Hopefully that family gets some closure. Finding a body while geocaching is a fear of mine too... I know! I was really surprise with the cache name. It appears that they had been looking for that guy in Febuary, when they found the body of someone else instead. So, now geocachers looking for a cache called "Skull and Bones", find him instead? Edited April 23, 2012 by 4wheelin_fool Quote Link to comment
+TheAlabamaRambler
Recovering the body of a loved one to tell the story of their death and to be laid to rest can be important to the decedent's family, so for their family's sake I am glad that he was discovered. On the other hand it can be traumatic for the finder. I've found, or been with teams that found, four in my work with Search and Rescue, several more back when our REACT was active in responding to rural motor vehicle accidents before the days when police were cross-trained with basic EMS skills, and two that I just ran across... one while geocaching. At night. In a cemetery True story! One was an elderly man in a grocery store parking lot. He had loaded his groceries into his car, sat down in the drivers' seat, had his keys in his hand and died. We parked next to him and got out to go into the store and my then-12-year-old son said "Dad, I think there's something wrong with this man." Indeed there was. I was glad he didn't get the car started and die while driving down the road. The last was with a group of cachers, three carloads of us were spending a weekend caching around north Alabama and stopped for one on Saturday night that was in a small-town cemetery. HammerJane pointed out a drunk sleeping on a low stone wall behind some cedar trees near the cemetery's entrance. Something didn't look right to me, so I walked over to the sleeping man and discovered that he was in fact dead. From the clutter in the area it looked like he was an elderly homeless man who had been camped there for some time. We were competing in a national numbers competition called Cache League and didn't want to get tied up there so we found the cache and moved on without calling the police. Mr.Yuck
That must have been a horrible and traumatic find I agree. I don't know how I would react to finding a dead body, and I hope I never find out. Anywho, I found the log where Juicepig found a dead body near Toronto in 2006. And in the process of doing that, I also discovered that Lil Devil has a Caches where dead bodies have been found bookmark list. Quote Link to comment
+Nomesquad
That sort of situation would have totally shaken me up. I feel bad for the family, and for those geocachers, that's gotta be a total buzzkill to a good caching day. On the more positive side, at least a body has been recovered so loved ones can have some closure. Quote Link to comment
+Mitragorz
I'm obviously a little twisted, but one of the things I'm looking for when I'm geocaching IS a body. They find so many out by me that it's pretty much a common occurrence. They've found three so far this year, all in my main caching area. They find all kinds... Headless, footless, just heads, just torsos... I was out with my brother recently and he spotted a set of bones not too far off the trail. They weren't human, the hoofs gave it away. Don't misunderstand, it's not for lack of respect for the dead. And It's not that I'll get some kind of "joy" out of finding a dead body (that's a level I hope I never reach), it's more of a curiosity thing. What's it like to find a body? I want to know. I know a girl who found two dead bodies in the span of one week. Another girl I know was ice skating quite a few years back and found a severed head frozen in the lake. The rest of the body was either found behind a local movie theater, or was one of the handless/headless bodies they found around the corner from my house. It's terrible, but it gets to the point where it's tough to keep track of which body was found where. It's just one of those things that happens around here. So yeah, I'm twisted, sick, and demented, so go ahead and castrate me... But I'm still waiting for my "Stand By Me" moment. Quote Link to comment

+Isonzo Karst
We came across a collapsed man fallen from his bike on a trail. We were "second to find", but not by much. The first finder was doing the correct thing, trying to reach 911, with very weak signal. We both tried our own phones, and both had no service at all. So we started CPR on the not breathing, no heartbeat, but still warm human being (ie, the dead guy on the trail). We kept this up for a while - I got spelled by the arrival of some more folks coming along the trail, and not too long after them, a couple of firefighters arrived. They took over the CPR. It took quite a long time for an ambulance to arrive. The CPR never stopped, but the heart and breathing never started, either. We had been biking and caching. But that was the end of it for the day. Turned back and went home. I don't believe I've ever cached that trail again. But I probably will, it just doesn't come to the top of my 'go there" list for some reason. Quote Link to comment

I always keep an eye out for any sort of tracks/animals while on the trail, and do a brief investigation of any bones/gristle found. If a serial killer is one killer who's killed several people, and several bodies DO NOT match a single killer... How do they figure there are a few different serial killers, if they can't match the bodies to each other or any killers? In other words, how do they figure it's a group of serial killers as opposed to random body dumpings? If you're referring to the bodies that have been popping up on Gilgo Beach, those are totally separate from the ones they find by me. I think they said that all (most?) of the Gilgo Beach bodies were hookers and do suspect it was one guy who killed them all. I think they did link one body they found by me to Gilgo Beach. I think it was the one we called "Tattoo Girl." She had no head, hands, or feet (maybe she did have feet, this was almost 10 years ago), but did have a tattoo. They wound up finding her head and hands out by Gilgo Beach. Last year I think, while combing the area for more bodies. They don't know if her killing was related to the other hooker bodies they found there, based on the fact that they found most of her out by me, but that's where the found the rest of her. There was also 4 dead prostitutes found just outside Atlantic City in 2006, and several theories are that they could be connected. Quote Link to comment

I bet AC is 10x worse than it is here! Quote Link to comment
+Don_J
Sorry, it was Law andOrder They also had one on Law and Order, SVU, where the cache was deep inside a subway tunnel, an obvious permission problem. The totally obnoxious geeked out FTFs ended up finding a body instead of the cache. Quote Link to comment
+Sol seaker
Finding bodies while geocaching is something I keep in mind a lot. I've been in a whole lot of areas where I'm sure that is a distinct possibility. Some were so creepy I was almost sure of it. I've cached in a lot of areas where the Green River killer dumped his bodies. They don't know if they've found them all, so I stick to the trails. The killer doesn't remember how many he killed. Somewhere over 90 I guess. Once place I was at where he dumped bodies, I was way off in the woods looking for the cache and I really felt like I was being watched. I couldn't see or hear anyone, but it was really intense. I got out of there as fast as I could. There was once I almost made that bookmark list myself. We were finding a cache by small boat. We found the cache and pulled up on the shore nearby to dump out the leaves or something. I walked a short distance away, before my partner's insistence called me back. It was a few months later that they found a body there that had been there over 6 months. It was certainly there when I was. I don't know why my partner had so insistently called me back. Sometimes we have a sixth sense about these things I'm sure. Quote Link to comment
+Mitragorz
They have found several bodies on long island which do not match a single killer. The police have speculated that there is a few different serial killers working the area. A big story is going to break on Monday regarding those Gilgo Beach murders. You heard it here first! I!
We were competing in a national numbers competition called Cache League and didn't want to get tied up there so we found the cache and moved on without calling the police. ... but you did notify the police soon afterwards, didn't you? They wrote CALL 911 BODY NEARBY in sharpie on the cache container for the next cacher. Quote Link to comment
