Why do some people have sock puppets for hiding caches? Just wondering.

Some people list caches under a team account so the whole team can maintain them.

they may want to use a different personality when creating a puzzle....or some folks create hides that they want to find on their account....

 

not advocating any of these, just saying what I see.

I've only seen people do that for events and challenge caches.

I've seen it done here in UK by cachers who set up a long trail or large circuits of caches. Apparently it's done so that all logs go to a separate email account and it's easier for them to monitor maintenance issues in the separate accounts. They often use an 'open' sock account and state on the profile page their main caching account name.

I've thought about creating a sock puppet account for hides, but only because there is a thief in my area targeting certain people. That's another very viable reason for the sock puppet account for hides.

A sock puppet account can be very helpful in avoiding harassment from cachers who like to do that sort of thing.

I don't personally know of anybody doing it, but I have heard that some cachers will use one account (their well-known one) for their more creative hides, while using a sock puppet to hide jar in the bush caches.

I did it primarily for the theme and the fun of being unknown in the area I cache. In this case I think it adds a bit of mystery. My real account has not found these caches even though I am tempted to to get them out of my map view

His sock puppet, the one he's using to post to this thread, is a basic memebership. His real account, the one that has the issue of seeing his sock puppets caches, is probably premium and then yes, he could ignore them if he really wanted them off his map.

Doesn't mean that one can't have multiple accounts for finding and / or hiding geocaches. And there's plenty of legitimate reasons to have multiple geocaching accounts.

Some caches we have hidden jointly reflect that on the "hidden by" line, and will take you to the profile of the one who actually got the approval. Haven't thought of a separate account for hiding - but would if there were a maggot targeting our caches...
