The Parks and Rec Dept became aware of geocaching because one of their people found one of the cache markers (a tiny tupperware container about the size of a Skoal can) filled with pot on the ground. He tracked me down and wanted to know what I had to say about it. I assured him that was NOT part of the game and proceded to educate him about it. I ended up making another multi in the park with his help, and all is way cool now with geocaching and Wichita Parks and Rec Dept. If you'd rather not say exactly where, just a general location like Greece or Hilton would be good. I'd hate to be nearby when the owners or cops stop in to check things out. When I called 911, they asked if I had an address. I told him I had the GPS coordinates. He said "but no address?" I told him it was in the woods along a hiking trail. The officer informed me that they only use the GPS for emergency purposes, and this did not constitute an emergency. THEN, he asked if I had brought them home with me. Since I have somewhat of a stubborn streak, I went back to the cache area this evening to make sure the garden was still there. When I found it, I dialled 911 on my cell phone and told them what I had found, where I was, and where to meet me. I carried the plants out to the parking lot and waited for them to arrive. Can any of you match this list? How about the stash of pot in an aluminum briefcase, or the porn stash found on the banks of a river? Then there was the half-dug-up dead body wrapped in a blanket right after Elizabeth Smart disappeared (police got all excited but it turned out to be a dead dog). And the piles of somebody's ashes right where a cache was supposed to be hidden atop Mt. Olympus above SLC. Once I found a 4-foot bong in a bush. Another time I managed to stumble into a drug supermarket on SLC's west side one dark rainy night when looking for Bingo washers in a geo-game (that one was scary). On a lighter side, I found some super-sized puffballs that got local fungi enthusiasts all excited (54" circumference, 28 lbs), and then there were the lovers I found in the bushes. hee, hee. But the most unusual find category is a tie between running into a certain geocacher--(Craig) Cach-u-nuts--over and over and over (we haven't figured out what that means.), and lastly but not leastly, the time I found not just a drug stash but a whole frigging portable meth lab. It's a lust for adventure that gets me out caching, but this is getting rediculous. And then there was the time the bomb squad blew up my cache...! Sort of apprehensive about what might happen next? +astrojr1&GGGal Posted July 28, 2003 Share Posted July 28, 2003 GPS coordinates are hard for many law enforcement agencies to deal with, because of dispatchers, who deal almost 100% with addresses, not long/lat, are not well paid, and probably don't do much geocaching (with a few notable exceptions - police officers and dispatchers out there please correct me if I'm wrong). Long/Lat are "outside the box" of almost all processes local LE deal with, so anything OUTSIDE ORDINARY DAILY PROCESSES, unless it deals with emminent threat to life or property, is cast off the system as quickly as possible. This is changing with NEMS, OnStar, etc. but for now, they don't want to "get any on them". You gotta look at it from a beat officer's point of view. Mostly, police are concerned if someone is getting hurt or something is being stolen, unless it's easy and safe. The "find" is not easy to deal with (they have no GPS, they probably can't drive their police car to it, and they most likely have never used a GPS so they'd have to learn about something "technical" before responding - certainly NOT part of their daily processes), it's outside the box, no one was getting hurt, so the police have three good reasons right there not to mess with it. Besides, we are usually better served with them staying on the road arresting dangerous drunks and armed criminals and such. astrojr1&G-O-GardenerGal Quote Link to comment

I can only imagine what would happen if some hapless geocacher ran into their owners while out hunting... This brings up a good question, how many of you are carrying weapons or firearms when geocaching? I admit that I did bring my glock once when I was bushwacking in an area known to have wild boars. Fortunately didn't run into any. Oh, and in no way am I suggesting that weapons or firearms become a normal part of any geopack... nestbuilders Posted August 8, 2003 Share Posted August 8, 2003 On the flip side for the police department...Usually you have to call the narcotics department (not 911 emergency) and they will send out a team with a K-9 to help. They are used to tracking through the woods for drugs, and sometimes missing children, etc. They usually carry a GPS unit with them. However, I feel kinda bad because I'm borrowing my ex's GPS unit from his work to go caching. Not only is it illegal to collect antlers on NPS land (or any thing else for that matter), shed antlers are an important calcium source for other small animals. Gnawing on them also helps promote healthier teeth by helping to remove tarter. It's not that they dislike Crest tarter control toothpaste so much, they just hate to use toothbrushes... But neither Galadriel or Celeborn was there, nor any other elf. Anyway there was two houses built up in trees, probably huts of homeless people.
