  1. Due to increasing time constraints (mostly from my boys getting into every activity under the sun) I find that I can no longer give up the time to cache very often or to maintain my caches in a manner that they should be maintained. For the most part, my physical caches have gone to sleep with the fishes (literally in a couple of cases) either through mother nature carrying them away to some water body south of Wichita, or by plundering. Most of what I have left are Wichita-area caches, mostly of the virtual flavor. To whit, I have 5 physical caches in east Wichita, 1 of which is a multi, a locationless cache, and 14 virtuals 1 of which is a multi, 2 of which at just north of Strong City, and 1 Winfield. I also have 2 physical caches in SW Colorado, that I will try to find a local to maintain or take down. I will fix up my physical caches before turning them over, and give you correct answers and some background on the virts. I thought about just taking them down, but felt that it would be better to see if I can find a new home for them first. Any caches I can't give away will be archived by Jan 31. Anyone interested in taking over my caches, please contact me at the following, (Please substitute the phrase cox.net for the text after the @ sign, I already get enough spam without having a bot grab my address from this website.): shanetheeviltwin@myemialaddressisnotthis.com Thanks to all who have hidden caches I've found and to those who found the caches I've hidden. It's been a good time geocaching, and I hope to go out and find a couple now and then. Right now I'm up to my elbows (substitute any body part for elbows) in alligators, and spring will add two boys in: scouts, tennis and golf tournements, and baseball, leaving about 1 hour a week of me-time. Thanks, Shane the Evil Twin
  2. Well, in Wichita, we had our 1st CITO last year. Not only did we invite the local Parks and Rec guy in charge of our parks, but I worked with him to set up a multicache http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?ID=64448 in the park. The park is an area that is being restored to its natural habitat, and there were a series of educational markers describing the plants and animals that once inhabited the area before man came along, and those that are being reintroduced. They also described the ecosystems. I got him to go around and help me set up the questions and clues (thus giving him some ownership) and we identified areas that could use some cleaning. We also had another cacher set up a new cache in the park, and both his and my caches were unveiled at the CITO. We also took the Parks and Rec guy out to find a cache already in the park so he could see how we geocache. Basically, we resolved any worries that the Parks and Rec folks had about caching in our parks, gave the attendees a chance to bag 3 caches (including the CITO), cleaned up a park, and in general had a blast! Just my 2 cents.
  3. I had a cache that was a multi. A local Parks & Rec guy called me and said that he needed to talk to me about one of the clue containers. Someone had removed it, put some pot in it and left it on the ground. I had some 'splainin to do. I assured him it wasn't me that put the pot in it, and showed him the whole cache, and everything was cool. 5. I have a Travel Bug that is attached to one of my 5-yr old's favorite toys. He gladly gave it up to be a TB because it's mission was to come back to Wichita KS for Thanksgiving. It was picked up by a cacher in December but that cacher is now too busy to do much caching any more. Is there someone in Houston who could help me get this TB moving again. I have had contact with the cacher and offered to find someone who could either meet him or go get it from a "one-time TB cache" where he would leave it somewhere (not necessarily a cache) and the person could pick it up. I don't know what part of Houston this cacher lives in, but will find out. Anyone willing to help me out and get me back into good graces with my 5-yr old? Thanks in advance. 6. While not maintained by geocaching.com, this is an excellent site with what you are looking for. You can select a state by clicking on an empty area of the state (or use the drop-down box) and can even drill down to a local area using the same technique. 7. I have a multi in a park in Wichita. The Parks and Rec Dept became aware of geocaching because one of their people found one of the cache markers (a tiny tupperware container about the size of a Skoal can) filled with pot on the ground. He tracked me down and wanted to know what I had to say about it. I assured him that was NOT part of the game and proceded to educate him about it. I ended up making another multi in the park with his help, and all is way cool now with geocaching and Wichita Parks and Rec Dept. Moral of the story: report your "find" to some authority and the whole game will be better off. ***** "Always drive 99. 100 is just too dadgum fast." - Worth Thagard, journeyman, philospher, and basic drunk.
  8. By the way, my avatar picture is of my son at the place I plan to hide one of them. Hadn't noticed that before. Anyone up for a nice July summer snowball fight? "Always drive 99. 100 is just too dadgum fast." - Worth Thagard, journeyman, philospher, and basic drunk.
  9. Shouldn't have limited it to approvers only. All comments are welcome. quote:Originally posted by Nurse Dave & LKay:I had a very nice supportive reply for this, but since I'm not an approver nevermind. http://www.sprecher.us/smiles_63.gif ---Real men cache in shorts. 10. Since I tried to get some advance idea of approval odds, and was told to post to forums, I am. I plan to hide 2 caches in SW Colorado while on vacation next week. They will both be on National Forest Service land, not National Parks System land. The area has few caches, and few cachers. But I have contacted a local cacher who has graciously and eagerly agreed to maintain these caches, who lives about 1 hour away. I also have a local who is not a cacher, but is a real outdoorsman who also agreed to maintain for me. I will contact local Ranger prior to placement to get his consent. May even take him out with me to hide them to allay any fears about geocaching. But before I go and hide two perfectly good cache containers (Coleman water jugs to withstand the elements) full of goodies (not Happy Meal toys), I want some input from approvers as to whether the caches will be approved, or if I'm just wasting my time and goodies on these. I will put the geocacher's name on the cache pages who has agreed to maintain them to make it go smoother. By the time I get internet access to build the cache pages, I will be 600 miles away. This doesn't mean I can't get the local cacher to go nab them if they're not approved, It just means I gave the guy 2 good caches to pick up. So would the approvers, especially approvers who cover N37 47.599 W107 03.304 give me an idea whether these will fly? 11. We're having a CITO day April 27th in Wichita KS. This will serve multiple purposes. 1) The obvious CITO. 2) We haven't had a get-together to meet one another since I've been involved. 3) We will have the Wichita Parks Dept. people on hand to teach them about geocaching. Hopefully this will head off any limits they want to put on our placing caches in Wichita parks. Time 1:00, place Chisholm Creek Park. See http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.asp?ID=60498 Peace to mother earth! "Always drive 99. 100 is just too dadgum fast." - Worth Thagard, journeyman, philospher, and basic drunk.
  12. The geocachers around Wichita, KS may have a get-together with the Wichita Parks Department people to educate them about geocaching and also make a goodwill show by cleaning up the park we plan to hold this event in. Hopefully we can get this scheduled for April 27th. It would be a very nice tie-in to clean a park and keep our parks open to caching by involving the land managers. Who knows, we might even get a little gratis and positive media exposure for geocaching. quote:Originally posted by Jeremy Irish:Folks, We're planning on organizing a Cache In Trash Out coordinated event for Earth Day. This year Earth Day is on April 22nd, so we'll plan on trying to get groups around the world to pick out a particularly messy park in their area and clean it up on Saturday the 26th. This would be both a great opportunity to show our thanks for the park system that hosts many of our caches, and would help sway the nay sayers about the sport. 13. Let me know if you get that Black Camaro Cache going. I'd like to piggyback a "Mullet" cache on that one. You could score both almost every time. quote:Originally posted by Crusso:Cool! Still a bit ahead of Wolfs (2nd grade) and Bears (3rd grade). But that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a cool idea. I'm going to put together a little virtual course at a local scout camp for this spring for my Bears. The hard part will be getting enough GPS's together. I'd like to get the boys into pairs or trios to do it, and have maybe 10 virtuals, with a final cache where the snacks and drinks are. "Seek and ye shall find." - Jesus, quoted in Matthew 7:7
  22. Not up to being GeoCop. But GeoDetective, sure. I've viewed several of this cachers' virtual finds, and he/she has made a habit of bending the rules and logging finds that may have been valid on some kind of technicality, but certainly didn't fit the spirit of the cache. I might have thought this person was an attorney because of this, but he/she seems to log way too many caches to work that much. Going to be one less log in the stats. 23. I'm fairly new too. And I've probably committed some eittiquete faux pax (lotta French there). But As long as I'm confident that I have done what was required, like I'm sure I've got a date or name off of a plaque because there was only one date or name, then I email the owner then log it immdeiately. Haven't run into a problem yet. But I don't know that I've come across one that specifically told me to wait for confirmation before logging either. I doubt you'll find too many people who get their BVDs in a bind as long as you demonstrate that you actually did the cache. "Seek and ye shall find." - God, ????, BC

  25. quote:Originally posted by worldtraveler:We don't have the benefit of reading your original description. Do you still have it available so that you could post the text for us to read? Perhaps it was an honest misunderstanding. But either way, it's your cache. If you intended for it to be for torpedoes only, you certainly have the right to enforce it, even if your original wording was less-than-perfect. Worldtraveler About the only thing I changed in the cache description was that I added a section in the rules of the cache that used bold on the quote:torpedoes and said no missiles, artillery shells, etc. Other than that, the cache description is the same. I guess my question should have been a poll. I just think a person with 1400+ finds ought to be held to a higher standard than someone with 14 finds. Kinda like a 14-yr old ought to be held more responsible for cleaning his room than a 4-yr old. I probably am being too picky, just kinda rubbed me the wrong way that I asked for one thing and got another. "Seek and ye shall find." - God, ????, BC
