  1. Somebody has to jump in with the tree hugging response here and it might as well be me..... While it's freaky to come across a mess of bees unexpectedly, the last thing we want to do is kill them. They're only protecting their homes. With the introduction of various mites and foreign pests into this country, the native and cultivated bee populations have been decimated. Since the bulk of the food we eat depends on bees for pollination, we need the little buzzers more than they need us. I used to be a beekeeper and they really are fascinating little creatures. That said, I was a bit taken aback when I grabbed onto a tree last year to avoid getting wet on a stream bank and found myself face to face with the entrance to a wild colony's hive. The walk back through the creek bed was a lot less stressful...
  2. Hello. I'm hoping for some help. I placed a cache a year ago which was not approved due to the .1 mile proximity rule. I emailed back and forth with the NY approver a few times since I didn't think the rule should have made a difference due to the terrain. I ended up getting pulled away from the game for several months so I never got a chance to resolve the issue. The cache was archived in November due to my lack of response. I fixed the problem and posted a reviewer note on June 15th saying I had fixed it and asking for it to be approved. I also sent an email to the address I had for the NY reviewer. I sent another note the 28th since I hadn't heard anything. I'm wondering if it's possible to get an archived cache approved or if I should have listed it as a new submission? How long are approvals taking these days? I'm also not sure if the same person is serving as the NY reviewer so I don't know if they've gotten the emails. As I said, I've been gone for a while and I'm trying to figure out what I should do next. I placed a travel bug in this cache and let the owner know it is in a cache waiting to be approved. I don't want to let his bug sit too long without any action. Thanks for any help you can give!
  3. OK, I didn't see this in the forums in my quick search. I picked up a couple bugs the night before a trip to the west coast to move them along. I dropped them off and they've all been picked up. After 2 weeks of hell at work I'm getting back to logging my travels and can't figure out how to log the bugs. I didn't have a chance to log them out of their old caches or into their new caches before they were picked up. The only option I'm given is "grab it from the current holder". How do I log these so they get credit for the miles? Thanks
  4. I usually vist the area several times and mark likely locations. After I've found a good spot for the cache itself, I'll decide which intermediate points to use and in what order. That way I can direct where finders are traveling and help set the length. Hiding a quality cache is much harder than finding them. You could always just do the drive and drop route but I applaud the effort you're taking to make things a little more challenging and rewarding. I typically put 8 to 10 (or more) hours into mine - of course that's because i'm anal and there are usually a lot of ways to go off track on my multi's. I've got about 7 more in the works that I'll get around to finishing by spring. The walk 200 feet and find a gladware box full of wet paper caches are losing their shine for me. Geesh, I'm starting to sound like a cache snob already.... "We have such sites to show you..."
  5. I have put FTF prizes in my caches but I also like to hide and seek the more difficult caches in the area. The higher value prizes tend to get people motivated to get out and do the work before all the hints and spoilers show up in logs. "We have such sites to show you..."
  6. Well, since almost every other state has been covered, NY ought to be in on it too.... Please let me in on the details as well. Thanks! "We have such sites to show you..."
  7. Thanks. I'll stay on the west side. Those crazy eastsiders and their gardens.... "We have such sites to show you..."
  8. Hi Jungle... I'm planning some night caching the next couple nights. What cache was this near? If you'd rather not say exactly where, just a general location like Greece or Hilton would be good. I'd hate to be nearby when the owners or cops stop in to check things out. I've already gotten to explain to the sheriffs what Geocaching is so they didn't think I was doing anything else in Durand after dark.... "We have such sites to show you..."
  9. The fawn was probably ok and the mother was probably just off eating. Deer rely on their coloration to survive and fawns learn early on that their best defense is to curl up and become invisible. In hunted areas, the biggest deer are those that retain the trust in their ability to blend in their whole lives. The deer that move when danger is nearby are the ones that become dinner for a predator or hunter. As long as the wind is blowing away from the predator, most won't won't be able to detect a hidden deer. "We have such sites to show you..."
  10. I've hunted some that are almost a couple years old that are in good shape. It depends on the container and the location I would guess. For my part, I had part of my first cache stolen within a week of placing it. Not the cache itself but an integral part of one of the waypoints! Those things had been out there for decades.... 11. Hi Guys I saw the discussion on scratch prevention which caught my eye since I've dropped my new GPSr twice since I got it last week and was nervous about scratches. They were awesome! They had sizes for several different GPSr's but not for the Sportraks. I sent an email asking whether they could make them and Brad emailed me 2 hours later saying he could have them in the mail tomorrow! I've heard nothing but good things about them and he was great to talk to. They are $6.95 for 12 and he's even throwing in a bunch of extras. I'm probably going to drop some in caches but if anyone in the Rochester area wants to try them out, let me know because I'll have a few extras. (just one more way to meet some "veterans"...." The link to the GPS products is: http://strongengineering.com/miva?/Merchant2/merchant.mv+Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=BA&Category_Code=SPGPS BTW, I have NO connection to them at all.
