+Team GPSaxophone
I headed up today to check out a couple of the trails for the Mountain 4x4 Event. One trail was still blocked by snow at about 10,500 feet and another was blocked by a boulder. Depending on what happens the next couple of weeks, alternate routes may be necessary. You can read my log here. RM Great pics on the log, Dave. As far as the boulder, I think we could probably get that moved with the right persuasion. Say a winch, come-a-long and a rather long pry bar. Now where did I put that C-4? Yeah, I was thinking there may be a way to move that thing, but it is pretty big. Here another picture of it from a distance for perspective (It's a bit out of focus because I was getting rained on and in a hurry to take the shot before my camera got soaked). We could move it with my Suburban Quote Link to comment

Where did you spot this critter? RM On Buckhorn Rd while on my way back down from setting this cache. There was an SUV several hundred feet ahead of me and this fella popped onto the road inbetween us. A very large moose at that. I am guessing that he was close to 7' at the hithers. He crossed the road and paralleled it for a while (I was stopped) and decided to walk back across back to the marshy area he started from. He went back to doing what moose do and I clicked some pics. He didn't take his eye off of me for very long. It was a very impressive sight seeing him! Quote Link to comment

Visit GCWFB6 to see more pictures from my log. I wrote to Deb at the State Forest State Park (the owner of the GCWFB6 cache) and she sent me this info: Moose Viewing in North Park Who would have guess back in 1978 and 79 what an impact to North Park 24 Shiras moose introduced in the willow bottoms on the upper edge of the Illinois River would have. From these original 24, North Park's moose population has grown to 600 making North Park the "Moose Viewing Capital of Colorado". The Algonquian Indians gave the moose its name, which means eater of twigs. Moose feed on young twigs, buds, bark and the leaves of woody plants. Willows are their favorite food, but they also eat aspen, fir and aquatic vegetation. North Park has an abundance of moose food. So when searching for these awesome creatures find their favorite food sources. Here are some tips for watching moose from the State Forest State Park: - Early mornings and early evenings are the best times to spot moose, but it's possible to see moose any time of day. - Look for moose among the willows and brush along streams and ponds. Moose can blend with their surroundings surprisingly well. You may be looking at a moose without knowing it. Scan the willows for out-of-place shapes, colors and sounds. Or look for motion, like the flick of an ear, the bobbing of antlers or the rustling of willow branches. - You may see evidence of moose on the trails. Their large, two-toed hoof is about six inches long, and their scat is approximately one inch long. Sometimes they leave scrapings on aspen bark with their front teeth or antlers. - Admire and watch moose from a distance. Moose are peaceful animals, but may feel threatened if approached too closely. They can act aggressively and charge if they sense a need to defend themselves or their young. Moose can be especially dangerous during the rut (fall) and calving (spring) seasons. If a dog or other pet accompanies you, please keep them on a leash to avoid any unwanted confrontations. Rule of thumb, if they are watching you, you are too close. Some of the better areas in North Park for moose viewing include the State Forest State Park where it is not uncommon to see moose visiting the Moose Visitor Center; Colorado Highway 14 from approximately mile marker 40 to Cameron Pass; the South fork of the Michigan River; Arapahoe Wildlife Refuge; Snyder Creek and Willow Creek on both sides of Colorado Highway 125; the Illinois River southeast of Rand and Jack Creek. Be patient and persistent, have your binoculars, spotting scope or telephoto camera lens ready and before long you won't be uttering those all too familiar words "Where's the moose".
