YanniG
Hello ! Recently I found out that many of the film canisters or the listerine boxes that I have placed at the center of Athens have coins ... I think it is getting too annoying for the next geocachers, because when they find the cache, after they write the log, they have a big trouble to place inside again all these extra stuff - the coins. Especially the listerine boxes that are already small, are very annoying. I think of placing some instruction at my caches, prohibiting placing coins at my caches.Do you think that should be convenient? Besides, the normal traditional caches have plenty of space for your coins...why don't you go and place them there? Kind regards ! Yanni Quote Link to comment
ohgr
If you don't want anything left in your caches, your best bet would be to say so on the cache page, and on the log paper. Feel free to send me any coins that you don't want. Ohgr Quote Link to comment
Blind Avocado
I wish there were geocaches when I was in Athens (1980-81)! I have been to the canter of Athens many times, as well as to many of the islands. Quote Link to comment
Ambrosia
People have this great, fundamental urge to leave things in caches. Anything. In any size cache. That's what makes the game so fun and interesting! You just gotta love it. Quote Link to comment
New England n00b
Coins On Micros - I Hate It ! I think you mean coins *IN* micros. And that you hate *THEM*. Unless you meant you hate it where there is only one. And on the cache, not in it. Wait... now I'm confused. Where am I? One thing that irks me in the micros that I have seen is a lack of 'maintenance', so to speak. Not only are coins annoying to work around, but so are old log strips. You know, when you have at least 15 entries on the new log strip, it really is OK to take the old one(s) out so there is room and noone has to cram them in and everything gets all crushed and teh cap doesn't close and the logs get damp so now the stubby pencil barely leaves a mark and you have to push so hard that you puncture that paper and give yourself an ouchie and *turning blue now* *breathe deep, count to 10* Ahhhh, much better... Lighthearted but serious commentary above. Quote Link to comment

cache_test_dummies
Any cache container which is filled up to, or beyond, it's capacity is a problem. The more trouble people have getting everything back into the container, the more likely it is that the cache will not be closed properly, which increases the chances of the the contents getting wet. I think of placing some instruction at my caches, prohibiting placing coins at my caches.Do you think that should be convenient? If it bothers you, it would be ok to mention this on the cache page. It's your cache. Quote Link to comment

YanniG
ohgr: All the coins that I will find I will place them to various traditional caches at the area of Athens. So you are free to come and get them ! I am not willing to spend them ! ! ! Blind Avocado: I wish today's local geocachers were not so lazy! Most of them are just waiting for me to place my next geocache...sooner or later I will stop placing if they don't start placing new caches. Ambrosia: I love geocaching but I hate trying to close a film canister while everyone has placed in coins and buttons and they do not fit into. New England n00b: I agree with you.As for the language, english is not my mother language, sorry about my mistakes.I guess you are not better in Greek ! cache test dummies: I totally agree with you.Safety of the micros in the first place. Finally I changed the instructions at my caches, so no coins or money will be accepted.Thank you all for sharing your ideas! Regards, Yanni Quote Link to comment
Melrose Plant
I can understand the original poster's sentiment, but I am not such an absolutist. I don't care what somebody puts in my small caches (I don't technically have any micros any more), it's what they don't take out that bugs me. I am a huge proponent of "Take something, leave nothing" when you can't get the lid on so that it's water-tight, or it permanently mangles the log book. It even says so on some of my cache pages. You can’t control what people do when they find your caches, but we can all control what we do. If you do regular maintenance on your caches, you can clean the coins out of them, service the logbooks and check the hiding places. I would imagine that people leave coins because they want to share with other, but if it bothers you, by all means, put the instructions on the cache page. Quote Link to comment
VegasCacheHounds
Yeah, all that you can do is take a deep breath, put a note on the cache page, and do regular mainenace when cachers ignore the note. Really, theres much worse things to worry about. At least the caches are still there and haven't been destroyed/vandelized/stolen. Quote Link to comment

Renegade Knight
Coins are about all I trade for. But if that 37 cents in your caches bothers you. Take it and create more controversy by donating it to some charity, then *gasp* saying you did so on a cache maintenance log. Quote Link to comment

Cait&aly&unc
Theye are your caches. You make the rules. We find the caches. We put our items- and I think they are all signature items- in the cache if they will fit. Take the time to do regular maintenance and remove the items you don't approve of or consider appropriate. Do a little research and become a numismatist if you have the time. But most of all please ENJOY this wacky pursuit of ours. It is a lot of fun, as it should be. Quote Link to comment
Team Cotati
Yanni: You assume that people, when seeing a cache container crammed to the gills with stuff will have the common sense to not try and cram more stuff in them OR that they will simply remove a little of the less significant stuff and leave it in another cache of appropriate volume. This will never happen. You could design a micro the size of a testube and someone will figure a way to cram a deck of playing cards, two AA batteries and a flashlight into it. And I'm not totally convinced that the size of the container has all that much to do with it. It will just take longer. Some people seem to take it as a personal challenge. Go figure. +Ambrosia
Yanni- I know what you mean about the micros being overfilled with little trade items. Most of my mantainance on my micros is taking out all the coins and misc. things that have collected there. I do not put trade items in micros myself, but I cannot help but smile when I open up a micro and see all the goodies squished inside. People are so funny about their compulsive need to trade. I think it's cute. Quote Link to comment
Ambrosia
I actually own a film canister cache that is specifically for trading foreign coins. I'm an avid coin and paper money collector. Unfortunately, most people do not have foreign coins, so my film canister hasn't seen that many coins. Quote Link to comment
9Key
One thing that irks me in the micros that I have seen is a lack of 'maintenance', so to speak. Not only are coins annoying to work around, but so are old log strips. Back in The Golden Days of Yore cachers would help maintain caches they found by replacing missing or non-functional pens, add a new page to a logbook, etc. Its become a lost art. Back on topic, I've often wondered why cachers insist on adding stuff to a tiny cache or a cache that is already full. Quote Link to comment

Back on topic, I've often wondered why cachers insist on adding stuff to a tiny cache or a cache that is already full. I dunno about that lost art bit. I made a replacement scroll for a micro I found just recently. Seemed like the right thing to do. There are a group/team of cachers in my area that seem to do nothing but find caches and replace baggies/logbooks whatever as needed. Odd, but very cool of them to do. Not what you'd traditionally think of "trading up", though I think a fresh baggie is of infinitely more worth to a cache than a McToy (cool as the kids might find them). I'm gonna start putting the bags in my daypack... They are the good Hefty Zipper ones too... Maybe some premade cache scrolls for the micros, too... See there, you've inspired me 9Key. Now I just need my car back from the garage so I can GO caching. Wheee! While I have not found a lot of micro caches (nor a lot of caches altogether), it does seem to me that old logsheets are the biggest problem. I've seen a few where there were 3 or 4 scrolls in the film canister, and they were always damp and/or scrunched up, making my above little rant painfully real. Add to that coins and such, and lack of maintenance is a real problem - much more so that a traditional cache where there is plenty of room. Cache Hiders: If you are gonna do a micro - you need to maintain them more frequently than a larger sized container. Thank you for your support! +ohgr
Thanks for the invite Yanni, If I go I'll have my girlfriend bring her change purse Played the lotto tonight so I could afford the trip, but the $10 we won will only get us to the gas station. There are really two sets of rules regarding geocaching, the guidlines that GC.com has set up, and personal rules for your own cache. If the personal rules don't conflict with the GC.com rules, you can make up any rules you want. You own it. Example: Red Sneaker Cache No one shall open this cache unless they are wearing red sneakers. Must e-mail picture of feet in said red sneakers with cache clearly visable to log this find. And for Sonoran Privateers: 0101010001100001011010110110010100100000011101110110100001100001011101000000110100001010 011110010110010100100000011000110110000101101110001011000000110100001010 0110011101101001011101100110010100100000010100110110111101101101011001010111010001101000011010010110111001100111 0110111101100110001000000110010101110001011101010110000101101100 01101111011100100010000001100111011100100110010101100001011101000110010101110010 0111011001100001011011000111010101100101001000000110001001100001011000110110101100100001 Quote Link to comment
fly46
Yanni - you could always send the coins to me and I could make a cool Greek Currency cache here in the states. I think something like that would be neat. Seriously, though, as long as your cache containers will still close properly, don't worry too much about it. Quote Link to comment
