Forum Language Question

I did a quick search with no results so I'm asking this here...

Is there a list of appropriate words for here on the forum? I had a post changed by a mod which made me quite uphappy.

I'm more than happy to follow the rules but again, I was unable to find any.

TIA

No posted rules. And the accepted standards seem to vary with time. The mods get stricter when things start getting out of hand and lighten up when we behave. While this may seem arbitrary I think it is fair.

To be safe post here like your kids were reading your reply.

Edit: Grammer.

There is no list, but you can read the general rules here: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?act=boardrules.

Just use common sense and don't get offended if a Mod tells you to tone it down. Being warned once is not any kind of thing to get super worried about. Basically just think family friendly and if in doubt about a word, pick a safer one.

There in lies the issue... Had the mod asked me to tone down, I would have been happy to do it. However, he edited my post do change it to his liking w/o informing me at all.

Thank you for the link. I guess the difference is the defination of foul language changes from one person to the next.

Personally, I don't see <EDITED> as being offensive but apparently the mod does.

next time I'll leave off the god 'ed part and add a different profanity and see how that goes over! :D

Edited out profanity after giving user plenty of time to do it himself.

Do you really think it was a good idea to post the words that were edited out here?

Maybe not, maybe so.

I did some searching and this is not the first time these words have been used. The search finds the phrase 6 times besides mine so apparently there's a little... miscommunications between mods as it seems a little selective...

Link to comment
Would you use that phrase when talking to your kids?

I don't have any and no, I wouldn't.

But I don't expect kids who are here above a certain age to not have heard it. I used it for emphesis purposes, not directed at anyone per say.

Well, you have used it in front of kids by posting it here. It would be nice if you were proactive and edited your own post. Kids do frequent these forums. Part of the reason why is because the moderators and the forum guidelines do not allow for profanity.

Fair enough and I will.

However, I stand by my statement that it's very heavy handed to change someone's post w/o telling them. I almost missed it and definitly would have posted the same thing again w/o realizing I shouldn't.

Thanks for the info all.

Sometimes when a dog craps and the owner doesn't pick it up, its easier to clean the crap up yourself instead of trying to contact the owner and hand them a bag.

You're the boss so I'll accept that. However, in this case, I highly disagree with the attitude behind it. It's one thing to correct a mistake, it's better to let people know a mistake was made.

Using your example, in our neighborhood, after the first time, we put out bags with a not to please use them and the rate at which people leave their crap has gone way down.

If the moderator deletes the entire post, that is completely OK. However, if the moderator modifies the wording (or the meaning) of someone else's post to his liking, now that is completely unacceptable. He can of course ask the poster for permission to publish a derivative work of the post and post it under his own name.

Amen Boss!!

Delete the post or modify the wording is irrelevant IMHO. The fact of the matter is that a general rule was not followed:

“Foul Language and obscene images will not be tolerated. This site is family friendly, and all posts and posters must respect the integrity of the site.”

Geesh – how much more succinct does it need to be!?

Like I said, it's something that's not always followed as you can find "foul" language all over the board.

Below is a quick seach

dadgum:71 times

a**#0!3: 17 times

B!+c#: 91 times

F Bomb: 1 times

Just being annoyed at being censored while A) others weren't :P not told.

Also the infamous "B" word has two meanings (IMO). The verb form is not, that I am aware of, considered obscene, while the adjective is. Again, JMHO.

If we're talking about the same b-word, I think it has a perfectly decent meaning in its noun form. No idea, how many times it has been used in these forums, though. :P

If there are rules for language moderation, then they must be abided by.

If there are no rules for language moderation, then moderate anyway.

There are some absolutely amazingly brilliant words in the English language that can be used instead.

The majority of people (and yes, I DO include myself) have become lazy, using profanity as the easy way out if they cannot find a suitable, non-profane word to use.

I was once soundly cursed by an English teacher at school. He used a wonderful selection of words, never repeated himself once, never used a swear word (even a mild one) and kept it up for close on two minutes.

I was seriously impressed!!!!

I have to put my 0.2c worth in here. Bad language has no place at all on a forum where we are all part of the same community, and have children who love the sport (and who, I am sure, often visit the forums).

Now ..... everyone rush out and buy a dictionary and show off your new found vocabulary at the next post! :P

It's a game! Here for our collective enjoyment. If bad language is edited out - it shouldn't have been there in the first place. Live with it.

Snif. But the other boys are doing it! So unfair *pout*

OMG. 9 times? Wow! Out of what, a billion posts? What a shocker.

Get over it. Occasionally a word does go through because these forums are not read post by post, topic by topic. If you want to look in the dictionary for naughty words it isn't going to support anything. Nor is justifying bad behavior by other bad behavior.

I guess one has to be careful of unexpected things that don't even have to do with bad words.

I once posted a link to a G-rated page on a popular website (whose name rhymes with "park") which features photoshop contests, among other things.

They featured a cache-related photoshop contest. That was fun! And I figured hey, G-rated page, no problem!

The deal with the *ark.com website, however, is that if you make the effort to surf far enough and click far enough, you might come upon links which THEN are not exactly g-rated.

So my post got censored and I was accused of posting a kind of porn link. :P I gave up.

For the record, this is the entry I made for that contest, for what it's worth... That is kinda cool, at least. :D

It's funny, responses like this usually lead to profanity. Since we're not allowed to use it, I will not but I may be thinking it...

Well, it is good to see that you agree with the moderators in this case. I looked up the original post before I posted in this topic and the only thing that was changed was a made-up sarcastic profane web address. It appeared that the rest of the post was intact and I still got the point that the he was making, unless the rest of his post was as sarcastic and profane as the web address that he made up.

Sparrowhawk, I agree that the link had some good fun creative stuff posted. But, all you had to do was click the logo at the top of that forum page and go to the main web page and links to porn sites were right there. I can't post parts of the wording from the main page even here because they are too obscene. I know you did not post it with that intent and I said so in my message to you. You just need to be careful when posting links.

Hello,

I am the moderator who edited the topic starter's post. I've been away all week and am just now seeing this thread.

Here is another quote from the Forum Guidelines:

If we edit a post and you do not like the changes, we will delete the message at your request.

If you would like me to delete your post, please just send a Private Message and I'll see to it right away.

As for the substance of your post, yes, those words have been used before in the forums. But not quite in the way in which you used them, in a thread that was started by someone who was legitimately looking for assistance in finding geocaches in a particular area. There was no reason to post in the manner you chose, and that is the primary reason why your post was edited, just to tone it down a bit. Also, I received a complaint about it, and I responded to the complaint.

I hope that this explanation is helpful.

It's a perfect explanation and I appreciate it. In the future (and I know you don't have to), I would request if you do change something of mine, please let me know as I don't want to make the same mistake twice. That is really all I'm asking for.

Further, I will endevor to try to contain myself and/or keep a check on the language. It's one of my pet peeves when people post a question that it is just as easy for them to look up and I always use the web address I posted.

Would you mind explaining which part of it was offensive for the person? If I tone it down with god-d.... instead of spelling it out, would it be okay or is it a blasphamy thing the person doesn't like? Is saying GD instead an okay solution. (I'm being serious and not trying to make fun. I want to stay within the rules and if I have to ask to do it, I'd rather do that than be wrong.)

TIA
