+ebengreene
Hello, I just got back from my 5th cache, and I'm having a great time. On the way back home from the cache site in Mississippi today, I had an outstanding sandwich at a little local joint. I mentioned it on my cache log, but I'm wondering if people think that is somehow innappropriate, or if people think I'm advertising. Personally, when I go out into areas I've never visited, I love recommendations about where to pick up a good bite to eat. I know this isn't a crucial issue; I'm just new and not wanting to irritate people. Thanks, Ben Quote Link to comment
+Beta Test
I think it's perfectly fine. Maybe a non local would find the cache and go to that resteraunt instead of getting some crappy fast food. Quote Link to comment
Captain Chaoss
Nice question. There have been a few threads pertaining to favorite eating spots, so I think your ok. My sister-in-law has a cache that mentions there is ice cream nearby. No complaints. Quote Link to comment
+El Diablo
It's great information to pass on. Don't worry about it. El Diablo Quote Link to comment
+The Blind Acorn
I think it's nice to find information like that in a log. I tend to forget to take snacks along for a cache outing. FOOD IS GOOD! Quote Link to comment
+carleenp
I think it is fine and helpful information. Note that when placing a cache, it could be deemed commercial to push a restaurant on the main cache page, particularly if the cache is at the location or seems to be placed to draw customers to it. But I think mentioning a good meal in your log should be OK. That doesn't make the cache page into an advertisement and simply provides some nice information for future finders. +art begotti
i say its perfectly fine. i've seen it done (linketylink), and since i already had a slight bias for that particular restaurant, i have to say its fine. besides, when you get a few caches in a row on a particular route, a nice snack break is good Quote Link to comment
+The Roving Ravenstones
Someone tried to start a GeoDining thing where you post the coordinates to a resturaunt that you review! It is pretty cool, On the other matter I say it's ok I have read many logs with similar suggestions Quote Link to comment
+BlueDeuce
If the place turns out to be a dive, I think you should be banned for life. Quote Link to comment
+JohnnyVegas
I would like to see more caches with eating recomendations from the locals, It is nice having a place to eat other than the last taco bell, micky D, or jack in the box you passed. Maybe someday there might be a spot to post coordinates for a local food source on the cache page. It seams the geodinnning page never got of the ground. Quote Link to comment
+Prairie Dog
Okay by me to recommend a restaurant. You're not making anyone go there. If the food stinks then I blame you personally, but thanks for the recommendation. Quote Link to comment
Team Lucky Cat
I wouldn't think that there is anything wrong with recommending a place to dine... providing you are not doing it to just shill for some place in which there is some economic interest in you drumming up business. In fact, in my area, there is a benchmark that is actually inside a local eatery.... MY0867 Quote Link to comment
+ChileHead
I placed a micro, I'm a Chile Screwball, whose main point was to get people to visit the ice cream place across the street. No commercialism in the cache, just a nice place to visit on the canal that happened to have a nice ice cream place nearby. The FTF prize was free ice cream cards, and I also sent free ice cream cards to the first person who told me what the cache name meant (it was an anagram for the name of the ice cream place, Bill Wahl's Ice Cream). +georgiadawn
Hi there .... I live in Hernando and think I can "second" your recommendation for the local burger place you are referring to. I read your log and assume it can only be one place. I think it is great to recommend places. I agree that I'd rather not eat at every McD's in the country but this particular place is not one I would have thought about going to when we first moved here had someone not taken me there. Glad you enoyed our little town. (I've only been here since March but love it!) Edited September 29, 2004 by mississippimorning Quote Link to comment
maddog1404
I see no Prolem with it. someone may not know that the eatery is there and may love it....Others might hate it. But everyone has a choice Quote Link to comment
mortonfox
There shouldn't be a problem with recommending a restaurant in an online log. I've done that a number of times. I've also eaten at restaurants recommended by other cachers. I wish someone in Southwestern Connecticut would recommend something though. Quote Link to comment
+joefrog
I do it in the cache logs, and there is at least one thread in the regional section dedicated to roadside eateries. Cachers do love good food! Quote Link to comment
+cottonmouth
I had an outstanding sandwich at a little local joint. I mentioned it on my cache log, but I'm wondering if people think that is somehow innappropriate, or if people think I'm advertising. There´s no way this could be appropriate. Give proper coordinates so others can find it too. Seriously, I´d appreciate a recommendation when I have to drive a long way for the cache. When a business does a good job satisfying their customers they deserve a recommendation. I don´t like logs or listings where someone mentions a great place with terrific food, reasonable prices and extraordinarily friendly waitresses and then skips the part with the whereabouts. 4x4van
Yup, the only way I'd say it was inappropriate was if a cacher was required to visit the establishment in order to log a find, particularly if they were required to make a purchase. But to simply recommend a local food place? No problem, since it is the cacher's perogative to stop there or not, and doesn't affect their ability to find/log the cache in any way. Every town has a number of local eateries, some good and some bad. I always appreciate someone in the know letting me know which one(s) are worth a visit. Otherwise, it's either standardized fast food (gets old real fast) or taking a chance on a local hole-in-the-wall, which often doesn't turn out well (particularly if I'm caching with my kids).
